Student Achievement
Congratulations to the following students who have
been appointed Sport Captains for Term IV…..
Captain of Athletics: Sebastian Francis and Luciana Kunkel
Captain of Badminton: Harriet Liu
Captain of Touch Rugby: Andrew Chirnside
Captain of Water Polo: Harry Molnar
State Athletics
On Monday 29 October the State Athletics Championships were held at Lakeside Athletics Track. Our two Relay teams
had spent the past three weeks training hard under the tuition of Jill Kunkel and with our 10 Year Boys team fresh from
a second place at Regionals, confidence was high.
With outstanding results in both 100 metres and Long Jump at the APS Division meet, Luciana Kunkel was invited
through to State level and started the day with a solid fifth place in her 100m heat; her time was fast enough for her to
qualify for the 11 Year Girls’ 100m Final to be held in the afternoon. This result was all the more remarkable as Luciana
had been laid off from training for some time with injury and this severely impacted on her preparation!
The 11 Year Girls Relay team (Clementine Froomes-
Houseman, Aimee Green, Luciana Kunkel and Charlotte
Argyrou) ran a fabulous heat, winning clearly and with a
time that placed them second of all 11 Year Girls’ Relay
teams. Having claimed a place in the final three of the
girls headed home to rest whilst Luciana warmed up and
headed to the Long Jump. She jumped her way into the
final against 22 other competitors and then placed 4th in
Victoria – an excellent result.
Luciana had very little time to rest! She headed to the start
of the 100 metres Final and against a formidable field ran
7th.
Please note: The mid-term
break is Monday 5 and
Tuesday 6 November -
school is closed. There will
be no Grimwade House News
next week due to the short week.
Our 10 Year Boys Relay team (Connor McCrea, Louis
Dalgleish, Yianni Danigelis and Christopher Long) were nervous and on the ‘big stage’ ran a fabulous heat; ending up
third overall and earning them a place in the final.
After some much needed rest and with the clock pushing close to 5.30 in the afternoon, our 11 Year Girls’ Team
attacked the final with gusto! After three wonderful baton changes our final runner Charlotte Argyrou battled hard and
was just pipped at the post for second place.
The Boys team ran almost one and a half seconds faster than their heat but ended up in fourth place in the final – the
MGS parents were cheering loudly as the boys closed in on the line and the first four places were separated by six tenths
of a second!
It was a wonderful (but long!) day and again MGS was represented by students and parents who showed obvious pride
in their school. Well done to all the above mentioned competitors – we are very proud of you! We thank Mr Parkes for
the part that he played on the day.
MTQ Award Ceremony - La Trobe University - 25 October 2012
On Thursday 25 October Mum and I went to La Trobe University
for the MTQ Award ceremony. My project, "Maths of my
Holiday", was on display there because I was being awarded a
High Distinction. Once we got our seats we went and had a good
look for my project and at all the others. There were ones about
ballet called 1+1=tutu, and also the maths of fast food and maths
about rollercoasters. They were all very interesting. When the
ceremony began, a guest Mathematician came out and sang and
told jokes and showed us some really cool stuff about maths. He
sang the first 200 digits of Pi. He also proved Pythagoras' Theorem
through a story. Mum videoed him. He was very funny. I had to go
on stage to get my certificate. I also got a $50 ABC voucher. I was
beaming with joy. It was 100% Awesome.
Casual Clothes Day - Tomorrow
Our last Casual clothes day for the year will be held on Friday 2 November. We will be donating to
Anglicare, an agency with whom the school has close connections. Anglicare Victoria provides support to
50,000 children, young people and families every year.
Through a range of diverse programs and services, they work towards strengthening families and communities so they
can protect and nurture the children within them.
They do this directly through services like foster care, emergency food and crisis accommodation, as well as indirectly
through family and community support services such as financial counselling, parent education and group work. It
appears early to be mentioning the word Christmas but Christmas is always a busy period for Anglicare and they very
much welcome our support through a casual clothes day.
When: Friday 2 November
Dress: Christmas colours (red, white, green)
Donation: Gold Coin or Pink note
Please remember your donation is required for casual clothes to be worn on the casual clothes day instead of school
uniform.
Remembrance Day
Grimwade House will recognise Remembrance Day which is commemorated on 11 November. It is a special
day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other
GRIMWADE HOUSE Melbourne Grammar’s co-educational primary school 67 Balaclava Road Caulfield Telephone: 9865 7800
conflicts. At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second
World War.
Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11 November.
Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Australia.
Grimwade House will be selling Poppies, class members of 3C will sell poppies to students for $1 and the more
expensive choices will be located in the office. All monies will be forwarded to the Bentleigh RSL. I often am asked
why the Bentleigh RSL? For many years our Poppies were delivered to us by Mr Ormond McLellan (father of Mrs Jan
Rizzo, Head of Art). Since his passing the Grimwade community felt it was appropriate to continue the tradition of
selling Poppies on behalf of the Bentleigh RSL in memory of Mr McLellan.
Simon Cowell, Social Services Coordinator
Grimwade Club 2013
The Enrolment Forms for Grimwade Club Activities in 2013 are now accessible via the School Portal, under
the Student Services/Grimwade Club section. Please print the forms, fill them out and hand them into
Reception.
A reminder that all swimming classes will automatically roll-over to next year unless otherwise notified by Libby Oates.
Please re-enrol for all other activities and call Bree Mayes if you have any questions regarding the timetable.
Health Alert - Chickenpox
Grimwade House has had several confirmed cases of Chickenpox this week (students and staff). Please
read the information below.
Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious viral disease caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The
main symptom is a blistering skin rash. Outbreaks are more common in winter and early spring. A
vaccine is available.
Chickenpox is spread by air-borne droplets from the upper respiratory tract (coughing, sneezing) or from the fluid in the
skin blisters (lesions). An infected person is contagious for 1–2 days (possibly five days) before the onset of the rash and
remains infectious until the blisters form scabs (usually around day five of the illness). Children with chickenpox should
not go to school or kinder until the last blister has dried. You should tell your child’s school or kinder if your child gets
chickenpox, as other children may need to be immunised or treated.
Chickenpox can be dangerous for pregnant women, newborn babies and people with depressed immunity.
Movember at Grimwade House
It is that time of year again! Movember! The month of November in recent years has become
known as Movember, an integral part of an Aussie Male’s personal CV. It incorporates all that is
good about men - facial hair. But more importantly it gives men the opportunity to fulfil that
underlying urge to finally look like Dennis Lillee or better yet Tom Selleck.
A few Grimwade House male teachers have decided to raise awareness about Men’s health and will be taking part. As
you may be aware by his lack of beard today, Mr Torben Vedelsby (Year 3V) is on board, along with Mr Tim
Santamaria (Year 1S), Mr Rob Bater (Year 4B), Mr Heath Pozzi (Year 5P), Mr Lachlan Toose (Year 5T), Mr Brad
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask, or better yet if you wanted some more information you can find
it at the Movember.com website. Our team link is: http://au.movember.com/team/751645
This is a fantastic cause and we really do ask for your support over the next month.
Year 3 Communities
Year 3 students have just completed a large inquiry unit in Visual Art, focussing on building Community. Their final
project was for each class to create their own community (set in the future). The students each created a glazed ceramic
house, building, or structure (some created stadiums or playgrounds). These have been placed on backing boards with
other elements such as gardens, streets, air-fields etc. These community artworks can be found in the entrance foyer to
Alfred Felton Hall. They will be on display until Thursday 8 November.
Maryanne Nairn, Visual Art Teacher
Junior Primary Sports Day
The Junior Primary Sports Day will be held on Friday 16 November from 9:00 – 10:30am. The day will run as a tabloid
sports format.
At the commencement of the Sports, we ask that parents come to the north side of the oval where seating will be
provided for the first event. At this location all classes will run a 70 metre sprint in groups of four or five. A toddler
race will follow, so make sure the younger children have on their fast shoes!!
At the completion of the sprints each class will go to a designated station situated around the perimeter of the oval where
they will perform a particular task for approximately 8 minutes. Each class will have a banner stating, for example ‘2C’
so they will be easily identifiable to parents. Classes will then rotate through a series of four athletics activities at these
stations, designed to challenge their skills. Parents will be able to move from station to station around the oval within a
demarked area. This will then allow viewing of the activities whilst allowing the children to focus on the task at
hand. It is essential for both parents and children that hats and drink bottles are on hand.
We hope that all the children will enjoy taking part in the various activities offered. Points will not be awarded,
however, children will be praised and encouraged to do their best at the given tasks. All children will receive a ribbon
and icy pole at the completion of the sports.
We hope to see you on what promises to be a very enjoyable morning.
From the Headmaster
Valedictory events dominated last week’s activities in the Senior School. Activities commenced on Wednesday
afternoon with the Celebration Day at Edwin Flack Park. The Year 12’s took part in a variety of games and activities
after a barbeque lunch had been provided by Senior School staff. Thursday began with a breakfast in the Main Quad,
followed by Chapel Service and School Assembly. Many of the departing students were visibly moved by the Year 9 to
11 guard of honour which formed from the Chapel to the Memorial Hall. On Thursday evening the Valedictory
Ceremony involved the presentation of Year 12 certificates and prizes. Guest speaker, Rafael Epstein (OM 1988),
presented a thought-provoking address. His final message to the students which urged them to be “pioneers rather than
tourists” in life, was a challenging, but well-received, piece of advice.
The Valedictory events concluded with a dinner at the MCG on Friday evening. At this event James Salamy (Yr 12,
By), James Moore (Yr 12, Ms), Sean Bolger (Yr 12, By), Josh Tinner (Yr 12, Be) and Ben Liu (Yr 12, Sl) covered all
aspects of the evening - Grace, Toast to Parents, Toast to the School and personal reflections - and were a highlight of
the evening. Finally, I commend the Year 12 group for the superb way in which they departed the School. I cannot
remember a final year group in the last decade finishing with such dignity and maturity as they have shown in their final
week of school which is, of course, a time when things can go wrong, with angst for all concerned.
On Saturday afternoon the APS Athletics Championship was held at the Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. MGS
performed extremely well to obtain second place behind an impressive St Kevin’s College team, but well ahead of
Xavier which finished third. There were many highlights on the day, including two APS records by MGS students. In
the boys’ U14 800m, Wes Lovegrove (Yr 7,Cf) recorded 2.09 minutes which broke the previous record by 0.69 of a
second. In the boys’ U17 high jump, Joel Baden (Yr 10, Py) smashed the second oldest APS record which had lasted
since 1979. Joel jumped 2.12m, beating the previous record of 2.08m. As commented on the day, Joel would have
jumped over the top of Aaron Sandilands, the Fremantle ruckman, who stands at a massive 2.11m high! Another
highlight was the performance of the boys’ open 4 x 800m relay team of Charlie McDonald (Yr 12, Wy), Harrison
Roubin (Yr 11, Ce), Ed Langley (Yr 12, Mr) and Mitch Hawkins (Yr 12, Py) which ran superbly to win their event. I
congratulate Head Coach, Mr Nat Coull, for producing another outstanding MGS athletics team. His record in the last
seven years now stands with one APS championship win and six second places, which represents the dedication that
both he and his coaches have displayed.
Last week the Wadhurst Art and Music Exhibition was held in the Motorworks Gallery in front of a large and
appreciative audience. In addition to the many excellent pieces of artwork on display, the Wadhurst Choir sang a
medley of Beatle songs which certainly entertained the audience. I take this opportunity to congratulate Wadhurst Art
Co-ordinator, Mr Adam Cawood, and Director of Music, Mr Julian Cairns, for their excellent efforts. In the same vein,
this Friday, the VCE Art Exhibition will take place in the Motorworks Gallery. I have no doubt that many outstanding
displays of art will be on display once more.
A Final Thought
I have long been influenced by the statement from American Civil Rights Leader, Dr Martin Luther King, that “anyone
can lead, because anyone can serve”. In announcing the Prefects for 2013 last week, I was well aware of the fact that,
whilst I delighted 22 boys, I disappointed another 90 who had applied for a Prefect position at the School. However,
leadership involves more than formal positions or the wearing of a white shirt. Leadership has many dimensions and I
witnessed some of these first-hand on Monday afternoon whilst visiting MGS students at the Atherton Gardens Tutoring
Programme at Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. Throughout this year, a number of our students have given up their afternoons
to help primary school students with their homework in association with the Smith Family Organisation. Their
leadership is palpable and, from their accounts, greatly rewarding. I am reminded of the words from Rabindranath
Tagore:
“I slept and dreamed that life was happiness,
Then I awoke and found out that life was service.
I served and found out that in service, happiness is found.”
Roy Kelley, Headmaster
From the Director of Leadership
The Greenhouse Effect
The past few weeks has seen a variety of celebratory occasions for the graduating Year 12 students. House and whole
Senior School ceremonies, dinners and services have given our community many opportunities to farewell and recognise
the Year 12 cohort. Each of these events has been characterised by thought provoking and personal speeches, many of
which have been given by the students. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with parents, staff and students
alike frequently commenting on the reflective insight of the addresses.
While I have taken something away from each of the speeches that I have listened to, I would like to highlight a few that
have resonated particularly strongly. The first was at a final House meeting last week which was attended by all of the
students and tutors aligned with the House. Each graduating student spoke in front of the House. One of the students
reflected on his feelings at the start of Year 9. He had used the less than positive experience of his older brothers as a
basis for his mindset and expectations. The metaphor he shared was that of a prickly cactus who wanted to repel any
attempts to support or care for him. As he matured and moved through the school he described how his attitude
changed. He realised that he had to be his own ‘man’ and develop himself as such. Sticking with the horticultural
theme, he said that for him Senior School was like being in a greenhouse. People and opportunities provided the ideal
conditions for him to grow as a student and as a person.
The second memorable speech was given at one of the House dinners by a student who entered the school in Year 9
from a remote interstate location. He described the initial culture shock and the numerous times when homesickness
swept over him, to the point where he almost gave up and went home. Through sheer persistence, the support of his
peers and a few key staff, he has also flourished. He now looks forward to attending university in Melbourne next year.
Finally, the speeches given by Ed Langley (School Captain) and Chris Lam (Vice Captain) at the Valedictory Ceremony
and final student-run Assembly deserve a mention. Rather than making light of the occasion, both students spoke about
each other with respect and sincerity. They thanked one another for the support the other had afforded them, the unique
qualities they brought to their respective roles and most importantly the friendship that had developed over the course of
the year. In many ways this epitomized the tone and manner in which the entire Year 12 cohort spent the last week of
their schooling at MGS; with genuine respect and dignity.
What is in the box ??
The latest installation at Gear Box Gallery is by Motorworks’ very own Cat Poljski.
Arts@mgs invite you to drop by to view anytime you are in the vicinity of the school. The Gear
Box is visible from the street at the Motorworks Art Department Buildings, 39 Arnold Street,
South Yarra. The present work will be on exhibition until 27 November.
An installation by Cat Poljski, Site-Specific-Space for LSM 12
Cat Poljski’s work reflects on city fragments where these cities are elaborated in a visual
language of disjointed perspectives and viewpoints, multi-layered and mutated in the prints to
suggest a sense of space. The images draw on the experiences of ‘stepping out’ of a familiar
environment. She is interested in cityscapes as a subject for recording and observing
particular cities. The spirit of a city and its transient nature are also an influence. Equally
significant in the images is the laborious process in which she makes the work.
The printmaking techniques are made up of many layers and changing visual effects. This
develops into a visual language in dealing with the construction of buildings. Irregular line
work and the actual inking of the plates can vary each time she prints the copper plates.
Different characteristics that then emerge from the plates are assembled to create an
ambiguous sense of space.
The sensation of a viewer’s experience of space as they engage with the work is an important
factor. In this site specific installation the laser cut steel plates are made as separate layers
revealing a buildings’ structure initially captured through a camera lens and then reconfigured
in printmaking and digital processes. The paper cut façade reinforces the shadows that are
cast from light to project the illusion of space within a contained frame. The process of
collecting and assembling images for the installation marks an important stage in the
production of the final image. The starting point is the centre of a city.
Instrumental Concert
Congratulations to the following students who performed at their instrumental concert on Thursday
afternoon. There were some very accomplished percussion items performed, and it was lovely to hear the
progress of the piano students. Ms Martin’s students rounded off the concerts with a contribution from the string
department with the lovely timbre of the cello being heard.
Rehearsals for Session 5 are now underway. By now, almost every student requiring an accompanist will have had their
first accompanist rehearsal. We wish all students the very best for their upcoming exam.
Year 5 and 6 students in Super Choir
You will have received a letter if your son or daughter is in Super Choir (unless they are currently on camp). Because of
camps and public holidays, it has been necessary to schedule some additional rehearsals in order for us to be fully
prepared to perform repertoire for the Carol Service in the last week of Term 4. All Super Choir members are asked to
attend both boys’ and girls’ Super Choir rehearsals starting this Friday 2 November. Both rehearsals will be weekly
until the end of week 8 (Friday 30 November) on Tuesday mornings and Friday mornings at 7:50am in Alfred Felton
Hall.
In addition, there are some extra full rehearsals on the following Friday afternoons:
Friday 16 November – Alfred Felton Hall, Time: 3:30-4:45pm
Please send your child along with some afternoon tea on these Fridays to sustain them through these rehearsals.
I understand that some students may already have prior commitments on these Fridays. In this instance, I would ask that
parents who have notified me regarding not attending these rehearsals, be extra vigilant with regards to assisting their
child to download the recordings from the student share drive to practise their parts at home. Students must download
the recordings onto their laptops or a memory stick at school as the student share drive is not accessible from home.
Thank you for assisting your child to learn these parts. Both pieces are beautiful and I am sure you will enjoy listening
to them rehearse at home!
APS Sport
Athletics
Mr Andrew Parkes
Badminton
The Athletics Team headed to Sandringham Athletics Track for our first meeting for the season. In sunny
conditions our 100 and 200 metre competitors ran well and our Relay teams managed a first, second or third
place in every event. Thanks to Mr Santamaria for his coaching and assistance.
Year 5 - Grimwade House vs Caulfield Grammar Wheelers Hill
In the 1st round of APS, Year 5 Badminton travelled to Caulfield Grammar, Wheelers Hill campus. All
players were excited and elated to be starting our 1st round. All pairs played extremely well and most games
were very close. In the end, Melbourne Grammar came out victors by a very close margin. Some great shots and serves
were performed by Hudson Fisher, Harry Crome, Ben Thomson and Jude Hine. Next week 5T will be on camp and 5P
will be filling their shoes…. stay tuned….
Water Polo
6B Blue - Grimwade House (2) vs Scotch College (7)
Year 6B Blue Water Polo team played our first match on Wednesday 24 October against Scotch College, at
Scotch. Our team had only had their first training session the night before so this was a real test of
applying the skills we had practised. Treading water and playing in 2m deep water for a 5 minute game proved
challenging and there were many tired students! We played 5 matches of 5 minute duration each and the team did very
well to score 2 goals in total to Scotch’s score of 7 goals. Congratulations to all team members and special
congratulations to Matt Freeman (goal) and Olivia Kudnig (goal). Well done to Sam Connock and Athena Stathoulis on
their attacking and defensive play.
Mr Brad Whittle
5A Blue - Grimwade House vs Haileybury
This week we played our first game against Haileybury and played 2 matches. The first match we lost 7-10 and won our
second match 13-10. Sam Mullin swam well and was great at passing the ball, Lottie Molnar swam very strongly. Nick
Johnson was a very good goalkeeper and so was Jack Anstee who saved many goals. Everyone did a great job and had
lots of fun.
Nicholas Ganci (5L)
Touch Rugby
Year 5A Blue - Grimwade House (7) vs Caulfield Grammar Malvern (5)
The Year 5 Touch Rugby team played their first game at home against Caulfield (Malvern campus). Both
teams turned the ball over many times in the first half by overpassing the ball, however as the game went on,
players retained possession and gained valuable territory by taking a touch early in the count. Harrison
Desmet scored the try of the game with a weaving run evading many defenders. James Newton-Brown also made many
intelligent runs to gain territory for the team. In an entertaining game Grimwade House ran out winners by a narrow
margin.
