NAPLAN ASSESSMENTS
I thank the Year 7 boys for their cooperation with the NAPLAN assessments that were conducted this week.
Parents can expect to receive an individual student report later this year.
COMMUNITY AWARENESS PROGRAM – 8 CAIN 2
8 Cain 2 are participating in their Year 8 Community Awareness Program today. These boys will spend time in the
CBD, learn photography skills, visit The Big Issue Classroom, discuss marginalisation in the community, reflect on
homelessness, sleep overnight in swags on the Wadhurst deck, eat at the MGS soup kitchen this evening and
have porridge for breakfast tomorrow. Mr Nathan Jessup (Director of Leadership) and Mr Simon Angus (Extension
Studies Co-ordinator) are leading this program. Our boys have the opportunity to see a different side of life
experienced by many people who live on the edge of our community. The boys will be challenged to raise funds
which are used to purchase swags that are distributed to homeless people who are unable to obtain shelter at
hostels etc.
PARENT INFORMATION EVENING
I do encourage parents to attend a Parent Information Evening in the Wadhurst Hall commencing at 7.30pm on
Thursday 31 May. Our Student Counsellor, Ms Julie Barclay, has arranged for author, Maggie Hamilton, to address
parents about boys. Some of Maggie’s topics include marketing to boys, video games, body image, self esteem,
secret lives, risk taking and the way forward. Please read the flyer in this Newsletter and return the attendance slip
to the Wadhurst office if you are able to attend.
WADHURST DEBATING TEAMS
Congratulations to Adam Weintraub, Nipun Kumaragama and Martin Lee who were successful in a recent
Debating Association of Victoria competition against Scotch College on the topic, ‘That we should ban all forms of
gambling.’
CONFIRMATION 2012 – Friday 7 September 7.30pm
As an Anglican School, Melbourne Grammar is pleased to provide an opportunity each year for members of the
school community to be confirmed in the Anglican Church. Confirmation is the sacrament of full membership of the
Church, where each candidate is called upon to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with all their heart and their
neighbour as themselves, until their life’s end. Many Melbourne Grammar students were baptised as babies, and
confirmation gives them the opportunity to make the faith they were baptised into their own. Students who have not
yet been baptised can still be confirmed; as in the early church, baptism and confirmation can take place in the
same service. Choosing a Christian identity while still at school will provide a healthy and honourable framework in
which to grow and develop in all areas of life at school and beyond. Our Confirmation Service this year will be held
in the Chapel of St Peter on Friday 7 September at 7.30pm. The Right Reverend Doctor Peter Hollingworth will be
the presiding Bishop. The service is for students from both Wadhurst and Senior School, and preparation leading
up to the service will be provided by the Chaplains.

Wadhurst students and parents can obtain further information about our Confirmation Service from Rev.
Eleanor O’Donnell ( elodonnell@mgs.vic.edu.au or ph. 9865 7709). Preparation for the Confirmation will
begin at Wadhurst in the last week of Term 2; there will be six sessions.
VISIT TO THE AUSTRALIAN CENTRE OF MOVING IMAGES
LIGHTS! CAMERA! ANIMATION! On Tuesday the 1 st of May, 2012, twenty Wadhurst boys set off to
discover a new world, the world of animation. We departed school at 9:30am catching public transport up
St Kilda Rd to Federation Square. As we stepped off the tram, we then were debriefed about our day at
ACMI by the one and only Mr Cawood.
Once we entered ACMI, we were introduced to the ACMI mentors and were told what we were going to be
doing that day. Once our objective was clear we then headed up to the animation labs, which contained
some very comfortable seats. We were shown different types of animations that were made by
extraordinary animators.
Our goal was to make a 3 second animation, which equalled to 99 drawing frames! There were two
different types of animation. There was the animation where you draw random creative lines and patterns
down the digital film-strip or the animation where you draw a character or an object sequence in each
frame. The mentors showed us some interesting and productive ways to use photo shop and enhance our
animations.

At first, it seemed like an impossible task in the short amount of time we had and the fact that we couldn’t
preview what we had done until it was finished. It became a lot easier though, as soon as we started to
create our animations, we learnt how to manage our time. The animation process frustrated some people,
but it was perseverance that won over when everyone completed their animation on time.
The final product was definitely worth all the hard work. As our trip came to an end, we had time for one
more stop. Screen Worlds! Screen Worlds offers the history, facts and interactive games about animation
and movement games. We enjoyed a good 20 minutes, playing virtual tennis and other fun games.
On behalf of all the boys who went I would like to thank Mr Cawood and his assistant, Ms Dennis, for all the
work an effort they put in to make this excursion such a success.
Here is the link to the student work page on the MGS website that is showcasing the animations: http://
From the Headmaster
Last week’s Mid-year Concert, held in the Old Melburnians’ War Memorial Hall, was greatly enjoyed by an
appreciative audience. The Senior String Orchestra, conducted by Ms Christine Leslie-Pfitzner, played
the St Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst which is a beautiful piece of music. The Senior Concert Band consists
of mostly Year 9 and 10 musicians, led by Conductor Mr Colin Doley, and they played several modern
pieces from ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ and music by Brian Hogg and David Schaffer. After the
interval, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, again conducted by Colin Doley, played two items, including a
melody of many of George Gershwin’s most famous songs. The last group was the Jazz Ensemble,
directed by Rob Glaeseman. They played music from Frank Foster, Pablo Beltran Ruiz, Nat King Cole
and Duke Ellington. A feature of their performance was the use of guest vocalists, David Holyoake (Yr 10,
Rs) and Seb Chesney (Yr 10, Be); Alex Gilham (Yr 9, Dn) played a solo piece on the trombone. I
congratulate all involved in this excellent music concert, especially Director of Music, Mr Philip Carmody.
This week celebrates National Volunteer Week and I am always delighted that at Grimwade, Wadhurst
and Senior School, we have many students and staff who volunteer their services to assist a wide range of
not-for-profit charities and other community groups. In this vein, Sunday sees the 15 th Anniversary
Memorial Fun Run for former MGS staff member, Reverend Adie Simondson, as staff, students, parents,
friends and OM’s walk or jog around the Tan in memory of the highly respected Wadhurst Chaplain who
was tragically killed in Africa. The Wadhurst Chapel has stained a glass window which commemorates
Adie. Proceeds from the fun run will go to the Adie Simondson Memorial Fund which maintains a student
scholarship with her former school, Diocesan School for Girls in Grahamstown, South Africa. The day
begins at 10am with a memorial service in the Wadhurst Chapel, followed by the run/walk at 11:30am.
The Senior School has a forthcoming visitor from Yale University in the United States. Their Associate
Director of Admissions will attend a breakfast on Thursday at 8am, followed by an information session.
There are growing numbers of Melbourne Grammar School students who are seeking overseas university
placements which, given our excellent VCE results and fine reputation, has meant that a number of them
have been sought after and accepted after by these prestigious institutions. The opportunity to study
overseas is a marvellous one, even for part of a degree or tertiary course.
This weekend’s APS fixtures produced some stunning results for Melbourne Grammar School teams.
Remarkably, all of the First teams recorded good wins this week and I was also able to gain a glimpse of
our future whilst watching the 9A soccer, hockey and football teams on the weekend at Flack Park. The
1 st V basketball team recorded an exceptional win against an unbeaten Caulfield team at MSAC and the
1 st XV enjoyed a tremendous experience of playing as a curtain raiser for the Rebels v Crusaders game at
AAMI Stadium against traditional rivals, Scotch College. Playing for the Bob Dalziel Shield, Melbourne
Grammar School played very well to record an emphatic victory, with Pat Toeta (Yr 11, He) winning the
player of the match award.
A Final Thought
The release of the Federal Government’s budget last week contained little specific information with
regards to school funding and even less so on the 41 recommendations put forward by the Gonski
Review. We are aware of the fact that the Federal Government has stated that they wish to implement a
new resource-based funding model to replace the old SES model. However, this requires a huge amount
of further research. The budget has set down $5 million for a further analysis of the Gonski
recommendations, which still requires an enormous financial commitment from all State Governments for
it to be enacted.

The original financial information used by the Gonski Review panel was of poor quality and is now over
three years old. One can only surmise, given the fact that funding arrangements for independent schools
are meant to be completed by the end of 2012, there will be a further postponement and extension of time
required for any new funding model to be established. Whilst this does create some uncertainty, especially
for smaller independent schools, it is vital that the Federal Government makes decisions on accurate, valid
and up to date information before any change is made.
From the Chaplain
Women’s Ministry
Roy Kelley, Headmaster
There were a number of items in the media about the ministry of women over recent weeks. The Roman
Catholic Church persists in making strange, even bizarre, pronouncements on issues of human sexuality.
One would think they wouldn’t want to reinforce the perception people have of them being out of touch, old,
celibate men who know very little about the problems most people face. But no, they continue to come out
with statements that make one’s head shake in disbelief. Recently they have done the following:
The Vatican has appointed a bishop to rein in the largest and most influential group of American
Catholic nuns (over 1,500 members) because they had challenged church teaching on
homosexuality, the male-only priesthood, and promoted “radical feminist themes incompatible with
the Catholic faith.”
(These nuns have committed their lives to God, been dedicated to service of the poor, to education,
health care and now they are being rebuked by Rome. The reaction by American Catholics and non-
Catholics has been predictable. An enormous Twitter campaign against the Vatican and in favour of
the nuns has been waged.)
Announced that Australian women are too picky when it comes to marriage and they should just get
on with it!
Come into confrontation with Melinda Gates, whose foundation is funding an enormous project to
give contraceptives to women in poor countries who want and need them.
Before I become too critical of those on the other side of the Christian fence, there now seems to be a
reaction against the ministry of women in the Anglican Church. The debate occurred over 30 years ago in
Melbourne but now some evangelicals, no doubt influenced by the theology of the Diocese of Sydney, are
claiming it’s not biblical. Meanwhile the Diocese of Goulburn recently consecrated a woman as an
Assistant Bishop!
As I write this on Mother’s day, I would think popular opinion would favour the women – both clerical and lay
- whose ministry is accepted more fully than the pronouncements of a church hierarchy out of touch with the
real world and apparently blind to the shortcomings of too many of its own.
Ron Noone, Chaplain

From the Director of Leadership
Every Hour Counts
This week is National Volunteers Week which is the biggest celebration of volunteers and volunteering in
Australia. According to the website which recognises this week, over six million Australians volunteer their
time every year, amounting to 700 million hours of community service across a broad range of areas of
society. Many organisations rely on volunteers for their existence and others would not be able to offer
the quality of service that they do, without dedicated volunteers.
There are many ways that people can volunteer their time which go beyond more traditional endeavours
such as doorknocking and helping out at soup kitchens. Many people are involved in sporting clubs and
associations in roles such as coaching, umpiring, beach patrols and committees. Within the Melbourne
Grammar School community, we have many parents involved in the Friends of Grammar, other
committees or support groups. Not only are these good ways to give back to the School or society more
broadly, but it is often an opportunity to forge social networks.
The students at MGS are regularly encouraged to volunteer their time to various causes and events.
While this may be within a structured programme, such as the Smith Family tutoring clubs or at the Relay
for Life, it doesn’t need to be. It may involve a student being proactive and helping an elderly friend or
neighbour with maintenance jobs around the house. One of our Year 12 students from last year spent
most of his senior school years helping a non-English speaking immigrant compose music.
An excuse that is often used for not being able to volunteer is that ‘I don’t have time’. Many people lead
increasingly busy lives and balance a range of competing demands. However, volunteering does not
need to amount to the time commitment of a second job. Even an hour a week can have a significant
impact.
Further, the benefits are often mutual, with many volunteers expressing a great deal of satisfaction which
comes from helping other people.
An increasing number of local volunteering opportunities are being offered to MGS students, particularly
in their senior school years. However, we are also looking at ways of getting more parents involved. Two
possibilities which currently exist include:
Project Platypus Plant Out: a tree planting project in the Wimmera catchment on weekends throughout
July and August. MGS families might be interested in taking part. To register visit www.platypus.org.au
The River Nile Learning Centre: this North Melbourne based organisation offers tutoring for
young refugee-background students who are in senior secondary school or TAFE. They are
looking for adult tutors during June and July (and possibly ongoing) to tutor one afternoon per
week. For further details contact the centre on (03) 9329 8425 or at info@rnlc.org.au
RUGBY
8A
On Saturday morning the 8A side faced St Kevin’s College in sunny conditions in Hawthorn. The 8A side was
supported this week by 6 of the development side players who added to the depth of our team and were a great
asset. It is clear it’s going to get tougher for the coaches to pick an A side each week, when there is such depth in the
squad.
Wadhurst scored 11 tries: M Parker (2), R Assan (3), C Perkins (3), Ar Ross (1), T Glover (1), A Brown (1) with 5
conversions most of which came from Sam Hannah.
The final score was 69 to nil.
The forward pack gave a strong performance in both halves with really impressive and consistent tackling, and ruck
work. Hugo Monk and the back line maintained the structure and discipline throughout the game with good calls and
tactics.
The best players were: M Parker, R Assan and C Perkins. Also great work to Hugo Monk and others with some
good tackles when the team was under pressure.
Thanks to the coaches.
Year 7A Under 13s
The boys were all looking forward to beating Scotch College. Nearly everyone turned up early and we all warmed
up as a group. Wadhurst got off to a great start with an early try. This must of set up the morale of the boys and could
see a victory in sight. The attack was amazing in our first half, barley playing in our own half. However, it seemed that
the tables had turned at half time; Scotch were bombing us with runs and outbreaks. We made small mistakes which
made big efforts to regain the ball. We tackled well and the forwards did their job, but in the end, they scored.
Wadhurst quickly recovered and quickly scored a few tries. In the end, we defeated Scotch 34 – 5.
HOCKEY
7A
Wadhurst 2 vs. Carey 2
On Saturday the 12 th of May the Wadhurst 7A hockey team played an away game at Carey Grammar. It
was a lovely day promising lots of good hockey play. After a quick warm up we were able to get what was to
be a hard fought match under way. Neither team was able to score in the first half but only a few minutes
into the second, Carey managed to slip one past our defence. Their excitement was short lived! Not long
after, Charlie Wackett scored a very impressive goal after a set up by Lachie Fergusson. However, the
Wadhurst side wasn’t finished yet and Alex Savage scored an amazing goal with only a few minutes to go
putting the scores at Wadhurst 2 and Carey 1. Unfortunately Carey with less than a minute to go managed
to once again breach our defence leaving us with a 2 all draw. Although we didn’t win the match it was a
hard fought game showing vast improvement from all players. Many times our defenders showed incredible
determination to stop the ball from slipping through. They did an amazing job.
Thank you to Nat for coaching.
8A
Wadhurst vs. St. Kevin’s
By James Kelsall
The 8A’s played St Kevins at Flack Park in a very high standard game. The game started off with a lot of
goal to goal action. Unluckily St Kevin’s got the first breakthrough, at the tenth minute mark of the first half.
The rest of that half was well fought out and no team managed to score a goal.
The next half began with some drama, with Will Fox getting a big hit on the head with a ball; unfortunately
he did not return to the field. The next goal went to St Kevin’s around five minutes after the hit off in the
second half.
Then a change of tempo came with Wadhurst getting a goal off a short corner. This resulted in a lot of
attack for Wadhurst, which eventually led to a brilliant second goal from Andrew Garry. This leveled the
score and the game ended on two goals apiece.
A really good team effort by Wadhurst to come away with a comeback draw against a strong side in St
Kevins.
Thanks to Jimmy for coaching
Wadhurst 8.7 (55) tied with Brighton Grammar 8.7 (55)
The term “up and about” describes a team that in a point in time has collective self-belief, enthusiasm for the fight,
momentum. We were able to maintain our appetite for the football for four quarters (most pleasing) with a good
(better, more even than our opponents) spread of contributors (very pleasing).
The game began at 8:30am in earnest. BGS moved the ball quickly to their goal square where the umpire saw fit to
play a holding the man free against MGS, resulting in a rapid fire goal to BGS. Quickly the score line raced out to 3.1
(19) to nothing before we swung into action. Even though the opposition were able to clear the centre contests
relatively easily, I thought that our ruckman – Sam Guest – played a terrific match against taller opposition. Sam took
a number of contested marks around the ground and was strong in marshalling the troops at stoppages. Having now
coached Sam in cricket and football, he remains one of the smartest operators I’ve seen. Vocal and well respected,
excellent body work and positioning, Guesty is always “up and about”.
For the remainder of the match we probably had the better of our opposition. Henry Morgan was outstanding. Many
young players pride themselves on getting to the stoppages, but fall down by operating at 80% at the crunch. Henry
explodes, wiggling the hips and hitting the contested ball at absolute top speed. In football jargon he splits the packs
and runs the lines. Nick Crouch was another top performer. Our number one tagger, Nick has the size and athleticism
to go with the big names, but also works well off his opponent, wins plenty of the football, and has a raking left foot
kick. I thought Michael Guise provided an excellent switch option on the New Street wing (in fact, like the eastern
wing at the Western Oval is still affectionately referred to has the “Doug Hawkins” wing, the New Street wing at the
Crowther Oval at BGS, is now simply referred to as the “Guise Wing”). Nick Freeman also provided great anticipation
and dash on the transition from back to forward, knowing exactly when to kick, and when to take them on. Finally,
Charlie Spring’s work around the packs (as was co skipper, Eric Nelson) was intelligent, opportunistic when required,
and accountable. Charlie rarely turns the footy over, consistently hitting targets and following up.
In the end we managed to change the momentum of thought. Perhaps relatively easy beats last year, this side now
has some basic structure and follows team rules. Disposing to advantage is our mantra. And the criticism that boys
were played out of position in past seasons is not something I buy into. Players don’t play positions, they play roles.
As the boys ran out onto the ground last Saturday, I left them with this one form Pat Reilly (former NBA coach at LA
Lakers and New Your Knicks) Put simply: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve
always got”. Not sure if they all understood the connotation, but they are young and their lives are long, and they’ll
get it one day.
8C
Wadhurst 21 was defeated by Xavier 59
The forecast rain and wet weather football for the match against Xavier proved to be false as Melbourne produced
perfect conditions for football. Wadhurst were playing the always strong Xavier College at Xavier.
Wadhurst made a statement early by being ferocious at the ball and ball carrier and the bright start was rewarded by a
goal to Harry Werbeloff. It was a plain to see that Wadhurst were up and about especially having broken their goal
drought from last weekend. They went into the first quarter a couple of points down and looking as though they were
more then capable of causing an upset defeat. The second quarter produced much of the same as the first as
Wadhurst’s intensity had visibly shaken Xavier. Goal sneak Riley Mullin was again able to reward the effort shown by
his teammates and kick a goal. Wadhurst defence was holding up superbly and providing plenty of run of half back
through the likes of Jackson Hiscock and Nick Lane. Hunter Keeble was playing his best game of the year at centre
half back repelling any forward thrusts by Xavier.
At Half time Wadhurst were close to Xavier. Wadhurst played the third quarter with excellent aggression. Cooper
Chestney and skipper for the day Hamish Fleetwood worked hard in midfield and won plenty of contested possessions.
They were able to feed it out to the slick Ed Horigan who was able to use his sublime Arryn Siposs-esque skills. Angus
Bartels looked like a man on a mission trying to prove that last weekends exploits weren’t a fluke, and he was able to
top that performance by putting in an outrageous display. His second and third efforts were inspiring as he constantly
kept getting up and using his big frame to his advantage. Unfortunately he copped a knock to the nose this quarter
which caused bleeding but such is his character he tried to keep playing with the blood nose and only came off after I
told him to. Harry Werbeloff managed to kick his second as he took a strong mark in the goal square. At three quarter
time Melbourne Grammar were only a goal down. Xavier, however, lifted their intensity in the last quarter and ran over
the top of a spent Wadhurst outfit. It was a great performance by the team as they showed terrific fight and teamwork
with all players in the team contributing.
Best: N Lane, JHiscock, E Horigan, A Bartels, H Fleetwood, H Keeble, R Mullin, C Chestney
Tim Habben, 8A Coach
The Melbourne Grammar 8B Football team made the long journey out to Wheelers Hill to play Caulfield Grammar. The
conditions were pretty good but on the slightly colder side. We started off well against a larger opposition, in the first
quarter, but let them get the better of us and out kick us on the scoreboard. Kicking into the wind made it hard but
didn’t stop Nick Poole kicking the first for our team. We started the second quarter off a bit slowly but came together in
the second half of the quarter with Toby Wright winning the tap outs and Lachie Guest going in hard to get the ball
down to the forward line. We started to come back in the second half of the second quarter with Will Hocking booting a
beauty (a goal!) from 45 metres out. With a few oranges in the blood system we came out in the third quarter ready to
go but couldn’t hold up against the size of Caulfield, even with Ben (Chris Judd) Wilkinson clearing the ball out of the
back line. With an inspirational speech from the coaches at three quarter time we went and gave it our all with Dakota
Fletcher always going in first for the ball, the final result didn’t show the determination in the boys, losing 14.8 (92) to
5.1 (31) the boys came off with their heads held high.
7A
Wadhurst 11.3.69 defeated Brighton Grammar 10.0.60
Again, the boys were tough from the start, ensuring that we made an impact on the game in the all
important first 5 minutes. Despite Brighton having a few bigger bodies our boys were determined to put
their head over the ball and push it forward. Harry Bede, Dan Mitchell and Angus Fanning continually
worked hard through the midfield and gave our forwards plenty of supply. Once in the forward line, Oli
Hurley (playing a new role at full forward) was able to get the ball to ground for Baxter Tilly who was able
to utilize his pace and vision to produce a number of scoring opportunities. Through the backline Hugo
Watkin and Matt Sutcliffe were very impressive as per usual limiting the possessions of their opponents,
Sutcliffe was particularly impressive when he had a go in the ruck showing yet another dimension to his
game. Overall it was a very impressive win against a team that had beaten Scotch (who comfortably beat
us in Round 1). It’s fair to say there has been a significant improvement in the way we compete for the
ball and work for each other, and I can honestly say we deserved this win.
Best players: D Mitchell, H Bede, B Tilly, A Fanning, O Dowd and F Smith.
What’s happening to our Boys?
Come and have a fun and informative PARENTING evening with well-known writer
publisher and social researcher MAGGIE HAMILTON
What kind of world are our boys to growing up in? Why are
growing numbers of boys suffering body image and self-esteem
problems? Why do they feel worthless without the latest branded
toy, game or item of clothing? What makes soft drinks, snacks
and fast foods so attractive? Why are they drawn to countless
acts of violence on TV, in movies and in computer games? What
impact does our highly sexualised climate, our emphasis on
success and money, have on them as they grow? And why are so
many boys vulnerable to cyber bullying and to porn?
Childhood and teenage life is changing rapidly, leaving parents exhausted and confused as to
how best to tackle the many issues they face. How does this high pressure environment affect
a boy’s confidence, his values and aspirations, his wellbeing, his sense of community, his
attitudes to girls and women?
Maggie asks these and many other vital questions, as well as providing numerous tips for
parents and educators on how to create a more promising future for our children.
Topics include:
 Marketing to boys
 Video games
 Body image
 Self esteem
 Secret lives
Growing up in a sexy world
 Risk-taking
 Alcohol and drugs
 The way forward
NEWS FROM FOGW
What a wonderful week we had at Wadhurst last week. It started off with a well attended and constructive
Class Reps meeting on Monday. The Class Reps have been doing a wonderful job organizing the many
events that have been going on around the school community. Dont forget to look each week in the
newsletter to keep up to date on what is happening in your house.
Thursday and Friday FOGW and the Class Reps were on
the deck with our Mothers Day Stall. The boys spend a
lot of time considering their purchase so I hope all the
Mothers appreciated their efforts on Sunday morning and
had a lovely Mothers Day.
Wednesday was our fabulous Mothers Day Yum Cha
Lunch at Ripples Chinese restaurant in Malvern. 100
Wadhurst Mums attended as well as our special guests
Greg Caldwell, Greg Hughes and Adam our Chinese
exchange and we thank them for taking time out of their
busy schedules to support FOGW. Also a very special
thank you to Yana Wu for all her work in helping us get
the event up and running.
Thank you Yana.
Our next event is the "Annual Wadhurst Family Breakfast" on June 21st. Save the date in your diary and the
invitation will be coming out next week. This is one of the few occasions where the whole school gets
together, teachers, parents, students and siblings. Its a lovely morning and there will be a delicious array of
breakfast treats for everyone to enjoy. A great way to start the day.
