POET LUCY LARCOM<br />

Ed Mair, amateur historian, presents<br />

an introduction to Lucy Larcom,<br />

close friend of Amesbury poet John<br />

Greenleaf Whittier, Lowell mill<br />

girl, and author of A New England<br />

Girlhood (1889). Larcom (1824-<br />

1893) was co-editor of a series of<br />

children’s books with John Greenleaf<br />

Whittier which caused a temporary<br />

break in their friendship. Come hear<br />

more about Lucy and listen to her<br />

poem “A Sea Glimpse.” Wednesday<br />

West Newbury. We’ll be exploring the<br />

Pike’s Bridge Road area & other highly<br />

productive sites in West Newbury<br />

during these evening programs. Some<br />

carpooling is involved. No facilities<br />

are available during this program.<br />

Directions: From the Scotland Road<br />

exit off I-95, take Scotland Road<br />

heading west; then take an immediate<br />

right onto Turkey Hill Road. Drive<br />

north on Turkey Hill Road about<br />

half a mile to a large, dirt pull off on<br />

the left [this is where the road curves<br />

right]. Pike’s Bridge Road is a dirt<br />

road with a metal gate across it which<br />

allows no vehicles to enter.<br />

acclaimed book Mistress Bradstreet:<br />

Poet. Anne Bradstreet was a resident<br />

of Ipswich in the 1600s. Copies of the<br />

local artist Richard Burke Jones. With<br />

extensive research and meticulous<br />

attention to detail, Jones brings the<br />

past to life in his paintings of historic<br />

scenes. The evening will begin with a<br />

6:30 reception followed by the artist’s<br />

talk at 7:00. Both will take place at the<br />

Museum of Old Newbury, located at<br />
