REGIONAL – As the days get warmer, it is time to escape to the garden, book in hand to enjoy reading amid nature’s
beauty at the same time.
And what better place to have a garden to read in than at the local public library.
That thought was on the mind last September of Langley Adams Library board member Lee Thomas when he approached
a group of Boy Scouts while they were cooking hot dogs and hamburgers for Groveland Day. He asked if any of the Scouts
needed a project to help them earn their Eagle Scout rank.
Jeremy Frederick, a junior at Pentucket Regional High School and a Life Scout, thought it was a great idea. Using knowledge
of basic computer-assisted design he learned in a class, he drew a sketch for a small reading garden in the back of the Groveland
library.
Libraries across the country have augmented limited reading spaces by creating landscaped gardens often adjacent to their
buildings. These areas include shaded sitting areas for reading and other library related activities.
There are reading gardens at the libraries in Georgetown and Hamilton, both built by scouts on their way to becoming
Eagle Scouts, Frederick said.
At the Georgetown Peabody Library, the Children’s Patio Garden was spearheaded in 2011 by Jacob Barosin for his Eagle
Scout Project. A member of Troop 51, Barosin worked closely with the Georgetown Garden Club and the Continued on page 3
AMESBURY – When is a metal roof more than a metal roof? When it can generate hot water for
the water heater or hot air to keep a home warm all winter.
A new company here, INroof Solar, has developed and is installing on high-end residential homes a
metal roof that is not just durable and attractive, but can cut energy costs for the home or commercial
building.
Developed by Fred Harkness, a New England homebuilder, the black metal panels have a water
glycol solution, similar to antifreeze for your car, that flows through a tube inside the panel. As the
sun hits the black panel on a south-facing roof, it heats the solution, which is deposited in a large
tank, ready to be used to heat water or air.
“We consider this a game changer when it comes to solar energy,” INroof’s web site states.
The solar collectors are built directly into the roof, making the system virtually impervious to the
elements. That means the collectors last longer and perform better than traditional solar panels.
INroof collectors can be built on residential and commercial construction and are compatible with
geothermal heating systems, the company says.
“INroof panels are the finest integrated solar thermal panels on the market today and are the
perfect choice if you want the benefits of solar energy without the look of solar
Rowley Municipal Light Plant Recognized for Reliable Service To The Community
ROWLEY - The Town of Rowley
Municipal Light Plant has received
national recognition for achieving
exceptional electric reliability in
2016. The recognition comes
from the American Public Power
Association (www.PublicPower.
org), a trade group that represents
more than 2,000 not-for-profit,
community-owned electric utilities.
The Association helps
members track outage and
restoration data through its
subscription-based eReliability
Tracker service and then
compares the data to national
statistics tracked by the
U.S. Energy Information
Administration for all types of
electric utilities.
“This recognition helps
demonstrate public power’s
commitment to reliable electric
service,” said the Association’s
Senior Vice President of
Engineering Services, Michael
Hyland.
Public power has a strong
track record of reliability,
said Hyland. Nationwide, the
average public power customer
has their lights out for less than
half the time, compared to other
types of utilities.
“We are proud to receive this
recognition. It is a testament to
the hard work of all our staff to
ensure that the lights stay on for
all our customers,” said Daniel
Folding, General Manager at
Rowley Municipal Light Plant.
panels installed on top of your
roof,” the web site says.
In winter, snow slides off the
panels, but during heavy snows
and cold days, the heated antifreeze
can be used to melt the snow and
ice off the roof.
Metal roofs have been around
for a long time, used primarily
because of their long durability.
The lifespan of a metal roof can
be 50-plus years. They are fire
resistant, and their interlocking
panels can survive a powerful wind
storm. Metal panels are also lighter
than some other roofing materials,
which works well in preserving the
structural integrity of a home.
The metal roofs already act as a
radiant barrier, deflecting the suns
rays and keeping attics and upper
floors cooler.
What Harkness and other
companies are exploring how
metal roofs can also be a platform
to produce solar energy to generate
electricity.
Robert O’Brien, a solar energy
expert and CEO of CI Works,
said, “In a solar world of risky
A Metal Roof that Heats Water
high-tech gadgets or gizmos and
significant corresponding financial
failures, Fred has found a way to
innovate his existing businesses –
HarknessBuilt Construction – and
leverage that expertise in metal
roofs to harvest the warmth of
the sun to heat the same building
with a very low risk profile from a
renewable energy source.”
The Massachusetts Clean Energy
Center agrees. It is investing
$41,000 in INroof to pay for the
installation of its panels on the
roof of the old ARC Technologies
building where CI Works is
nurturing the development of
dozens of small manufacturing
companies like INroof.
With panels on the roof
generating heat for the old
mill building, Caleb Reninger,
production manager for INroof
Solar, said the company can
monitor how the system performs
in lowering energy costs. Reninger,
a solar expert who formerly worked
for the Florida Solar Power Center,
left his job in Florida to who left a
job in Florida to join Harkness in
Amesbury.
Building Envelope, another
tenant of the expanding CI
Works operations, will install its
innovative building insulation
along with the new metal panels,
O’Brien said.
Like most renewable energy
systems, INroof’s panels run
about double the cost of regular
metal panels. Reninger said metal
roofs cost about $7 a square foot,
as compared to INroof’s enhanced
panels, which cost about $15 a
square foot. That does not include
hiring a plumber to attach the
panels to the water heater or hook
the system to a heat pump.
He noted that residential tax
credits will lower the costs and
make them comparable to a nonenhanced
metal panel.
“People who are buying these
panels are doing it because they
want to be environmentally
friendly,” he said.
For the moment, INroof only
offers the panels in black. But the
company is working on gaining
approval for panels made in
other dark colors – gray, blue and
green.
An Oasis of Tranquility and Inspiration
Continued from page 1
Friends of the Georgetown Peabody
Library.
In Groveland, the Langley
Adams reading garden will be 252
square feet in size under a trio of
tall evergreens, outside the back
emergency exit. According to
Frederick’s design, the space will
have three raised gardens, seats and
a bird bath. The space will have a
three-foot tall fence around it.
A picnic table, built by the
students at Whittier Technical
High School, will be just outside
the fence.
“My goal is to create a space
where people can go to sink into
a good novel, or youth groups
could go to plant vegetables,” he
wrote on his GoFundMe page,
where he is raising money for the
project. “My hope is that members
of my community will find this
area relaxing and inviting, and just
maybe their new favorite place to
read a book.”
Jan Voogd, the head librarian,
wrote in an email that the proposed
reading garden, which will have
access to the internet, will provide
“an oasis of tranquility and
inspiration.”
“The library is quite short on
space in general, but particularly on
space that is quiet and separate from
patron traffic patterns. The reading
garden would offer such tranquil
space, with a view of the river and
the sunset,” she wrote.
And being outside, on days when
the weather is beautiful, people
can come to the library and still
be outside, she wrote. “Jeremy’s
plan makes use of a charming treeshaded
area just outside a side door
that is now rarely used. He’s been
handling every detail, making this
project a boon from any angle.”
It has also been a learning
experience for the 17-year-old. In
addition to designing the garden, he
has jumped through several hoops
to gain the town’s approval.
First, he won the approval of the
library board. The trustees “were
excited about it,” he said.
Then he went before the Board
of Selectmen on March 6 and got
its approval on condition that he
get the okay from the highway
commissioner and building
inspector.
The building inspector insisted
on adding a gate to the fence
because the library back door is also
an emergency exit. The highway
commissioner warned him not to
damageany irrigation system heads.
Frederick estimates that the cost of
the reading garden will run $1,800
WHAT IF WE BUILT AMESBURY
AROUND PLACES?
The Amesbury Carriage Museum
is presenting a free lecture Thursday,
April 13 at 7:00 pm in Amesbury
City Hall featuring Philip Winn,
from the internationally known
Project for Public Spaces. Winn
will be speaking on “What If We
Built Amesbury Around Places?
- Discovering and Activating Our
Shared Spaces.” This is the second
annual Bailey Family lecture and a
fitting follow-up to last year’s program
“Walkable Amesbury” offered by Jeff
Speck. Working in partnership with
Amesbury’s Chamber of Commerce,
the Amesbury Quality of Life
Committee and others this event
is free and open to the public. The
program will introduce the concept of
“Placemaking” as a valuable tool for
city development and how “places”
are an essential aspect of community
life. These spaces can be intentionally
created and when developed well,
can effectively encourage economic
growth and new uses by community
members of all types. This program
provides an opportunity to influence
the future use of the Heritage Center
at 29 Water Street. And it will be
of particular value as we identify
placemaking opportunities and new
approaches to the greater Amesbury
area. Mr. Winn’s talk promises to be
engaging, educational, and inspiring
as the Amesbury Carriage Museum
joins hands with other community
organizations in shaping Amesbury’s
future. All are welcome at Amesbury’s
City Hall Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on
Thursday April 13 for an interesting
and informative conversation!
Health & Wellness
According to a Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
study, one in every 250 emergency
room visits was because of
adverse drug reactions. Seniors
were well-represented, coming
in at 30 percent of the total. The
numbers will no doubt continue
to rise as we age and end up in
the offices of more specialists.
Most of us take at least one
prescription drug, and some take
more than 10.
Here are a few steps you can
take to keep safe from adverse
Brighter Smiles...
The fact of the matter is
– every person is different and
does different things with their
teeth. How do you compare
a 90 year-old with all of their
teeth with minimal wear to a 30
year-old with 25% of their tooth
structure missing (unknowingly
in many cases)? Both individuals
eat, sleep and breathe but present
very differently. Theories abound;
there is no question that some
people put greater forces on their
teeth when they sneeze, swallow,
chew and sleep than others.
Greatly underdiagnosed, these
forces help cause things like
teeth wearing, teeth breaking,
TMJ/muscle soreness, tooth loss,
tooth sensitivity, gum recession,
and poor sleep patterns. Many
dentists (including myself) see
the signs but often choose to avoid
a challenging conversation with
a patient about a disease process
that is not fully understood.
Unfortunately, ignoring these
signs is not in the best interest of
the patient. It is the obligation of
the dentist to raise the patient’s
awareness of these forces and
to discuss strategies to combat
them. It is only through this
awareness that patients will be
able to decide if they want to do
anything about it or not.
Keep in mind that many of
the bodies functions, including
the forces put on teeth, occur
without any cognitive thought.
Is the Force with You?
Senior Scene
Prescription Drugs Don’t Always Mix
Patients will often say, “I know
I grind my teeth in my sleep
when I’m stressed”. Things like
stress may have some effect on
this, but is it important to look
beyond specific instances and
evaluate the bigger picture of
what is really going on.
For example, breathing is
perhaps the most essential of
all life functions. If you are not
getting the proper oxygenation
when you sleep, there are some
crazy things your body does
as a defense mechanism to get
air. Sleep-related breathing
disorders are underdiagnosed
and undertreated and may just
be one of the leading causes of
tooth wear and TMJ problems.
I am finishing my “miniresidency”
at Tufts this week in
dental sleep medicine so I will
be bringing this topic up again
in future columns with updated
information. If you have any
questions about this topic, or
any other, please send me an
email.
drug reactions:
* When you visit a doctor,
bring along all your medications.
Nowadays, many local doctors
are hooked up via computer
and can check your records
with other medical offices, but
not all. Unless you know you
can make a detailed, accurate
list, load up a shoebox with all
your prescription drugs and take
them with you. Ask whether
you’re still to take all of the
drugs, and if you need blood
tests for monitoring.
* Don’t forget your over-thecounter
drugs, even if you rarely
take them. One of them might
be contraindicated for mixing
with your regular prescriptions.
At least one kind of over-thecounter
drug isn’t thought to be
safe for people with high blood
pressure.
* Go to the same pharmacy
every time. Your drug records
will be stored in one place, and
a pharmacist will notice if you’re
taking certain drugs that will be
combined with a new one. He or
she will be able to tell you how
to take the drug, and can verify
what’s in the container. (Some
labels describe the pills inside by
color and shape.) Ask whether a
new one can be taken at the same
time as the others.
* Keep a chart at home,
especially if you’re starting a
new drug that will go along with
other ones.
