Controlled hospital environments with secondary glazing
Controlling the environment
within high dependency
hospital wards, operating
theatres and laboratories in
order to prevent the spread of
disease and infection is of vital
importance. In addition, creating a
quiet and comfortable environment
for patients can aid and encourage
faster recovery times.
Many hospital buildings of
traditional construction have illfitting
windows which are not only
draughty and poorly insulating, but
admit dirt and dust from outside
leading to problems of cleanliness
and discomfort.
Secondary glazing with high
performance seals can block the dirt
and draughts and when glazed with
a thermally efficient low emissivity
glass will reduce U-values across the
window to less than 1.9, a reduction
of up to 65% against a single glazed
metal window. This will create
cleaner, warmer surroundings for
recuperation, as well as help reduce
energy consumption.
Selectaglaze hinged casements
for healthcare have a flush glass to
frame feature which minimises dust
and dirt settling on ledges. Integral
blinds can be incorporated into a
sealed unit which are operated by a
knob control to the side of the
window, these provide patient
privacy and as the blinds are internal
it again reduces dust and dirt,
minimising maintenance and
cleaning requirements.
Selectaglaze secondary glazing
not only creates a warmer
environment but achieves very high
levels of sound insulation,
considerably higher than standard
double glazed windows. This will
reduce disturbance from outside
noise and help with sleep, an
important factor in recovery.
Besides environmental
improvements Selectaglaze
secondary glazing also helps with
secure environments , whether a
mental health facility using
polycarbonate glazing and antiligature
furniture or secure
laboratories in need of high levels of
protection to windows or viewing
panels. A range of products tested to
PAS 24 and Loss Prevention
Standard LPS1175 are available.
With fifty years of experience
working within hospitals and
healthcare establishments
