Tacoma Goodwill
Dear friends of Goodwill,
All of us at one time or another have dreamed of a better life. The inspirational people featured in this year’s report
demonstrate the importance of having a dream and working hard to achieve it – no matter what the barriers.
In 2011, we were fortunate to again be part of the dreams of so many people looking for that first job or second
chance. Although the struggling economy continued to challenge everyone, we were able to place over 1,700
people in jobs in the community – a record number. Additionally, over 8,000 people from Pierce to Cowlitz
County, across the cascades to Yakima and up the peninsula to Port Angeles, received services.
Our many job training programs expanded and flourished. Both Warehouse and Logistics and Custodial Skills
graduated more people than ever. We also created a new intern program in conjunction with Retail
Skills - TEACH - which provides on the job experience in a Goodwill store.
Business services continued to grow. We opened new stores in Shelton and Yelm and relocated our Gig Harbor
store. We are so proud to be serving these communities – providing jobs for up to 25 people at each location
and offering our customers value-priced household items they have come to expect.
Of course, all of this could not be possible without donations of gently used household items from generous
community members. More than 78 million pounds were donated during 2011, including 8 million pounds of
electronic goods.
Go2 Services also expanded, adding key clients throughout the south sound region. Go2 serves as a vital
training ground for individuals in landscaping, custodial and property maintenance.
As always our partners were extremely instrumental in helping us reach our goals. Corporate donors made the
Ready To Work scholarship events huge successes, including the first event in Yakima. All told, over $250,000
was raised to help people get the training they need to become productive members of the society. At the
Tacoma event, we announced a new donor program, DreamMakers, with generous community members
each pledging $1,000 or more to provide scholarship funding for people that otherwise would not be helped.
As we look to the future, our commitment to help more people reach their dreams remains strong.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
A dream for a better life
leads one young man on
a journey through STEPS
onto a college campus.
At Northwest University in Kirkland, everywhere Courtney Williams
turns fellow students greet, smile and wave. Now in his third semester
at the school, he feels right at home and loves the small college
campus. “I’m thinking about a major in communications/marketing
or teaching.”
Williams, the second youngest of eight, spent early childhood
watching his older brother and sister fight and abuse alcohol and
drugs. “I was in high school and I just had to get out of there,”
Williams said. He spent a short time homeless, embarrassed to
ask for help. “I finally told my school counselor who helped me
get placed into foster care.”
“My dream is to touch other peoples’ lives,
especially teens, that’s where my heart is.”
In the summer of 2009, Williams visited the high school’s Career
Center and found out about Goodwill’s STEPS Summer Employment
program. STEPS offers teens and young adults training and
employment preparation services. Full of potential, all he needed was
opportunity and assistance to fully maximize that potential.
Williams looks forward to a future of giving back using his personal
experience and hardship to relate to young people. “Remembering
all those individuals who helped me get here – teachers, counselors,
staff - I want to be like that, to give support to teens that need it.”
Through SCSEP, the sun
has come again and
dreams are coming true
for one participant.
At age 64, Gretchen “Wendy” Harris had to stop working due to
progressive sight loss from macular degeneration. After 30 years in
the accounting, banking and defense contracting fields she was no
longer able to work. In time, Harris grew unhappy and felt “useless”.
Then a new Goodwill store announced it was opening in her home
town of Sequim and Wendy applied for a job. The follow-up she
received was through the Senior Community Service Employment
Program (SCSEP). The program helps older workers to get temporary,
subsidized training with non profit and government agencies.
Wendy was placed at the Sequim Goodwill store as a book stocker.
Through SCSEP, Harris learned that there were accommodations
that could help her perform a variety of duties.
“I didn’t know how to dream
before entering the program.”
The following year Harris was assigned to the Vision Loss Center in
Port Angeles as a receptionist trainee and was promoted last fall to
office manager trainee. In her humble manner, Harris credits Sequim
store staff, her trainers and the SCSEP program for her success. “It’s
hard to explain,” Harris states. “I thought my life was over. SCSEP
interrupted that. It’s a window into a life I didn’t know I’d ever have
again. It’s amazing…just amazing.”
Determination and
hard work brings
new dreams to
custodial graduate.
Chau Bui, a native from Vietnam, moved to the area in August
2010. His language barrier made it difficult to find employment and
provide for his family. “I shop at Goodwill because I can buy many
things that I and my family need for our new life,” he said. “Then I
noticed ‘Because Jobs Change Lives’ [banners] and wanted a job
at Goodwill.”
Upon inquiry, Bui enrolled in the Custodial Skills program. Bui
admits that the language barrier was the most difficult part of his
training journey. He recorded classes, asked for class materials
in advance, and worked hard at home to overcome his language
difficulties.
“Everything I learned during the program,
I revisit and apply it in my daily work.”
Bui completed Custodial Skills training and Maximize Your
Potential (MYP) career service classes at the same time. After
those sessions ended, Bui didn’t feel as confident as he would
have liked, so he re-enrolled in the MYP career service classes.
He continued to show the same great work ethic he had exhibited
during his first round of training and successfully completed two
mock job interviews.
A year after Bui’s arrival to the United States, he has started a
full time job with Goodwill’s Go2 Services. “My current goal is to
become the most trustworthy worker. Until then, I will take more
classes with Goodwill to upgrade my skills and become a valuable
employee.”
How the Dreams Happen
Goodwill and the community come together
to turn donations into jobs.
Donations
It all starts with donors and the gently used goods that they
generously give to Goodwill. In 2011, nearly 1.5 million donors
gave over 78 million pounds of apparel, toys, books and other
household items. Once donations are collected, they are sorted
and then…
Retail Stores
…placed in our 28 retail stores, and sold to our loyal
customers. This past year, 3.4 million shoppers found
value priced items at Goodwill stores. The proceeds
from the sale of these goods are invested in the
mission of Goodwill…
Training
…job training, education and placement services.
Goodwill has dozens of training and educational
classes and services – all designed to help people
get ready to work. Over 8,000 people with barriers
to employment came through the doors in 2011,
looking to change their lives and hopefully make
their dreams come true by...
Jobs
…getting that first job or chance at a second career. A record
1,700 people were placed in jobs at local businesses in 2011.
This saved the community $15 million in public assistance and
other support. And countless dreams were fulfilled.
Community
Partnerships
Goodwill could not do what it does without the tremendous support
of community organizations. We partner with hundreds of local
employers, offering trained, ready to work staff for a variety of jobs.
Organizations also support Goodwill by partnering with Go2 Services,
which offers businesses quality property management and contract
services at a competitive price.
Volunteers change lives
Volunteers are central to Goodwill’s ability
to make a difference in lives of people who
need help. In 2011, volunteers donated
their time at retail stores and in our
e-commerce business. They served as
financial literacy tutors, job readiness
instructors and assistants in the job
resources room and computer lab.
In addition, volunteers provided support
to a variety of departments within
Goodwill’s administrative offices. Many
also took advantage of internship
opportunities throughout the organization.
Goodwill employees give back
Employees at Goodwill believe that offering a hand up is what
we all need to do. Employees demonstrate their commitment
inside and outside of work, with an exceptional dedication
to the mission – they volunteer at the retail stores and
special events and help people in times of crisis. In addition,
employees also support the mission or their personal charity
through the employee giving fund.
Dreams of Employment
Begin With Goodwill
Training Programs
In 2011, Goodwill provided over 8,000 people job training and support.
Of those 1,704 were placed in jobs, saving nearly $15 million in discontinued
welfare and disability payments.
Warehouse & Logistics
Now in its second year, the Warehouse and Logistics program continues to
grow. This seven-week course provides entry-level and career advancement
skills for the manufacturing, warehouse, transportation and logistics fields.
Offered in partnership with Tacoma Community College, the faculty uses
interactive video technology/distance learning to connect students in the
Tacoma, Yakima and Longview Goodwill Opportunity Centers.
In 2011, the maximum numbers of students, 208, for both Tacoma sites were
reached – with 94% finishing the program and more than 65% of graduates
gaining employment.
Custodial Skills Training Program
In 2011, Custodial Skills added training for the hospitality industry. This
program trains students for employment in the hotel/motel field, with special
emphasis on restroom cleaning, general office cleaning, hard floor care,
carpet care and window cleaning.
In this past year 88 people were trained in the Custodial Skills program.
Participants come to Goodwill with a dream of employment and in 2011
68% were placed in jobs upon graduation.
TEACH
A new program in 2011, TEACH (Training, Experience,
And Career Help) is a paid internship opportunity for
those who have completed Goodwill’s Retail Skills
program. Last year 60 students enrolled in Retail Skills
and over 40 are current TEACH interns in Goodwill stores
throughout Pierce County.
REACH Center Partner
Goodwill continues to be a partner in REACH Center –
the unique collaboration of 30 organizations providing
career, education and personal development services
to at risk youth ages 16 to 24. In 2011, REACH Center
served over 2,500 young adults. Goodwill provides
20,000 square feet of space to house REACH Center
and staff from the partner agencies.
Joint Base Lewis McChord
AbilityOne Contract
In partnership with Gulf Coast Enterprises,
Goodwill was awarded an AbilityOne contract
in 2011, which provided 50 workers with severe
disabilities jobs at Joint Base Lewis McChord’s
dining facility at McChord Air Force Base.
Under the contract requirements, 75 percent of
the employees need to be people with severe
disabilities. This federally funded contract
provides people who have challenges in the
regular workforce the opportunity for well paid
employment that can lead to better jobs.

Retail Sales
When people think about Goodwill they think about shopping and
donating. The number of people who did just that rose this year to
an unprecedented 3.4 million shoppers and 78 million pounds of
donated goods. What people don’t often think about, however, is
what their shopping and donating means to others.
Donations of gently used clothing, books, shoes, household
and electronic goods provide value price items for others to enjoy
and the revenue to support job training and placement services.
Retail operations revenue is the largest contributing factor to making
Goodwill a unique, self-sustaining non-profit organization.
To further serve communities in Goodwill’s 15-county service area
and to increase mission funding, new stores opened in Shelton and
Yelm. In addition, the Gig Harbor store re-located to the East side
of Highway 16 in June to a split-level space featuring updated Book
and Fashion Departments.
Holiday sales were given even greater emphasis in 2011. For
Halloween, Boo-TEEK’s were featured in each of the stores. The
Boo-TEEK’s offered affordable costumes and accessories. Specially
trained, and often times costumed staff, provided personalized help.
In late 2010, two Christmas Shoppes opened serving the greater
Pierce County community with one-stop shopping for holiday
décor, trees, dishware, ornaments and gifts. The first-in-the-nation
Shoppes experienced such a popular debut that three more stores
were added in 2011, in Kent, Puyallup and Lacey. More than 2
million pounds of Christmas items were collected and distributed to
the Shoppes.
Seventy-five percent of people employed in the Goodwill retail
business are disabled or disadvantaged and need help going to
work.
Online Sales
Increased growth and job training opportunities continued in the
E-Sales Department. Sales reached $3.6 million; consistently
placing amongst the top three Goodwill’s nationwide.
An online sales customer service training opportunity provided
participant Jenn Ward, the chance to learn new skills and earn full
time status. “Before I came to Goodwill, I couldn’t
even keep a roof over my head due to my
disability,” said Ward. “Now I’ve been able to do
just that and I’m very proud of myself. I’ve come
a long way.” Ward was the 2011 Achiever of the
Year and was honored at the Tacoma Ready to
Work event in May.
Donations and E-Cycling
Goodwill is the original reduce, re-use, recycling organization and
continues to be consumer’s first choice for donating gently used
household items. As the idea of ‘Being Green’ and the act of repurposing
your things has grown in popularity, Tacoma Goodwill
strives to make it even more convenient to donate with attended
donation sites, increased partnerships with school districts and
outreach efforts for community donation drives, events and event
pick-ups.
Following a record-breaking 2010, donations rose
to 78 million pounds, including 8 million pounds
of electronic goods.
With the goal to make donating as convenient as
possible, there are over forty donation centers and
attended stations throughout the 15-county service area.
Go2 Services
Go2 Services is a single source solution for property management
or packaging, assembly and shipping needs throughout greater
Pierce County. New offerings include residential services featuring
carpet cleaning, full-service landscape maintenance and general
handyman expertise. The residential line was launched by a $14,000
grant from the Ben B. Cheney Foundation. The grant funded equipment
purchases and led to the employment of three individuals with barriers
to employment.
Developing Dreams for People in Need
Goodwill provides a variety of job training and placement programs for the general public and intense, long-term services available for specific
populations in the community, including: people on public assistance; low-income senior citizens; people with disabilities; ex-offenders and
young adults with educational or other barriers to employment.
