The Foundation of People’s Dreams
The Goodwill Foundation commits to helping
donors know that their gifts change lives. In
private funds, $1.6 million was raised in 2011.
“Ready To Work” Events
Over 1,000 business and community leaders in Tacoma, Yakima
and Longview attended the “Ready to Work” events, which raised
over $250,000 in scholarship funds for people that need job training.
Participants from Goodwill programs gained valuable advice from
attendees at the tables, discussing their skills and sharing their
dreams for a better life. Inspirational graduates from Goodwill’s
training programs and business partners were honored at the events.
Grants
In 2011, grant-funded initiatives contributed significantly to mission
services at Goodwill. More than $2.4 million in public grants and
competitive contracts funded major programs such as YouthBuild,
financial literacy and other services. REACH, the 30 agency
collaboration serving at-risk 16 to 24 year olds and Goodwill were
recognized by the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation with awards
totaling $500,000.
Bequests, Estate and Endowment Gifts
Leaving a legacy or estate gift provides continual
support for people in need. Hugh S. Ferguson,
incredible benefactor to Goodwill, passed in 2011.
We are eternally grateful for his donations of two
stores, 38th Street and Port Townsend, and the third
floor of the Milgard Work Opportunity Center is
named in his honor. His generosity will assist
hundreds of people annually needing a second
Hugh S. Ferguson chance.
In 2011, the first endowed scholarship was created by Cindy
Thompson, former Goodwill board chair. During the year,
Goodwill gratefully received $198,000 in bequests.
DreamMakers
In 2011, the Goodwill Heritage Foundation launched DreamMakers,
an annual giving effort to connect scholarship donors with the
dreams of people with disabilities and disadvantages. DreamMakers
provide scholarships of $1,000 to $1,500 to people who might not
otherwise be eligible for job training and placement services. Since
its introduction in May, more than 120 generous individuals have
pledged $165,000.
