On the basis of end-use application, the market is segmented as animal feed, fertilizer, renewable energy
and others (personal care products, industrial uses). Owing to the increasing demand for meat and meat
products, the demand from animal feed segment is high. The use of food waste as fertilizer is an age-old
phenomenon but is limited by the fact that much of this use is in the form of on-farm application.
Renewable energy segment mainly involves production of biogas and is fast gaining popularity due to
reduced collection and processing costs.
On the basis of recycling process, the market is segmented into composting and anaerobic digestion. Both
these process are equally prominent and are used depending on the end-use. Composting is the treatment
of food waste with naturally occurring microorganisms within an enclosed area and in the presence of
oxygen. Anaerobic digestion is the treatment of food waste in the absence of oxygen and is particularly used
in the production of energy.
