Story by Olalekan Adeola
i had just made it halfway down
a quiet street in Lekki when
something caught my eyes. A
Mercedes C300 stood few
blocks away. I moved closer as
it beckoned. A mischievous
smile creeps through the
corner of my lips as I peeped
through the glass. How lucky
could I get? I sighted the car
key firmly seated in the ignition.
"What a careless owner, it's my
lucky day. This would be my
easiest car theft ever." I thought
to myself.
I took a quick glance around to
be sure no one was in sight. I
hopped into the car and started
the engine. Almost as the
engine came alive, the car
audio system turned up
automatically. "Hello Marcus, I
see you have arrived. Check
the brown envelope on the
back seat for the location of
your next target. I am
mornitoring your every move",
the thick male voice said.
Before I could find my voice the
audio system turned off.
For a moment it felt like I just
woke up from a nightmare. I
turned to the back seat, reached
out for the brown envelope
placed beside a briefcase. The
content of the envelope was a
picture of a middle-aged innocent
looking lady. On the other side of
the picture was written "Gloria
Adams". I dragged the suitcase
closer and opened. Fear gripped
me to the bones as I saw a well
arranged set of pistol and
silencer.
With the speed of 'bolt', I dashed
out of the vehicle without even
turning o ffthe engine. That
afternoon I made my fastest run
ever. Into one corner I veered,
then I stopped behind a fence to
take time out to breath. I
wondered who the lady was and
why they wanted her dead. I
opened the Facebook app on my
phone to search for her name.
Luckily I found a profile with the
picture matching the one I saw.
Dropping a message was a
waste of time because her last
post was about 4 months ago. I
found her phone number from
the 'about' section and dialed.
The calls were connecting, but
she wasn't picking up. I peeped
from behind the fence and the
car was gone. My heart skipped
a beat. Again and again I dialed.
