Hartnell’s student body is approximately 50% female and 50% male.
45% of Hartnell students are 24 and under, 45% are 25 and over, and 10% are over 49.
536 employees dedicated faculty and staff focused on student success.
Transforming
Hartnell
We are working diligently as a college
our accreditation is now fully reaffirmed and
we have closed a $ 3 million funding gap in
the college’s annual budget. Staff and faculty
have engineered an enrollment turnaround that
is bringing hundreds of new students to our
doors. part of that success is due to a significant
redesign of the college to meet the needs of
our community. this redesign is strengthening our career education programs, expanding
evening, weekend and distance learning offerings, growing our (eSl)english as a Second
language program, establishing a new Science & Math Institute, increasing south county
programs, and introducing special bridge programs that will accelerate student success and
increase the number of college going high school students throughout the Salinas Valley.
We are working with area school districts in a K-16 program to insure that by the time a
student reaches their high school year, every high school senior has applied to college and
understands the value of a college education.
to improve and expand our programs
and we have realized a number of
accomplishments over the past year.
Community support, through the Hartnell College Foundation, is essential and provides real
value to our students. the Foundation has been absolutely instrumental in launching the ag
Business & technology Institute, completing the technology needed for the library, creating
the new Center for Sustainable Construction, increasing scholarships to worthy students
(including a large number of nursing students) and supporting a myriad of programs across
the campus and at our King City Center.
together, we are in the process of transforming Hartnell College. It is
a creative work in progress that, with your guidance and support, can
be the masterpiece of the entire Salinas Valley.
Sincerely,
phoebe K. Helm
Superintendent/president
new board members
Hartnell College Foundation welcomes
three new board members in 2009.
Emmett Linder, Vice President of Operations, Driscoll Strawberry Associates,
Inc. -- emmett’s passion for agriculture came from attending an
“Introduction to ag Business” class while a student at Hartnell. Born and
raised in Salinas, he built his career holding various positions in the field,
from his first job as a produce Inspector at Kroger-Westco Foods Company
to Vice president of operations at Driscoll Strawberry associates, Inc.
where he has been for over 25 years. emmett has been very involved with
the ag Business and technology Institute since its inception and served as
chairman of the post Harvest advisory Committee.
Linda Gin, Vice President & Trust Officer with Wells Fargo Private Bank
-- linda and her son both graduated from Hartnell. linda’s scope of
community involvement and philanthropic activities is quite impressive:
co-chair of CSuMB Women’s leadership Council, a member of CSuMB
planned Giving Council; a Financial Secretary with Chinese association of
Salinas; a publicity Chair for league of Women Voters; and treasurer of
Chinese Women’s auxiliary. linda is also a principal of a Chinese school
and a chair of the Western Stage theatre arts Council.
Andrew Fernandez, Vice President of Raw Product, Taylor Farms --
andrew went to uC Davis where he received his BS in agronomy. He has
spent countless hours developing the Food Safety program at Hartnell
and volunteers his time to teach sessions at each of the workshops. His
commitment and support are a key factor that enabled Hartnell to be
awarded a recent grant of $200,000 from the Chancellor’s office to
expand the Food Safety workshops into a full certificate and aa degree
program. He serves on the ag Steering Committee for the ag Business
and technology Institute.
Funding For ag
the Harden Foundation generously continues to support the ag program at Hartnell College. this year, the
Foundation designated $100,000 to honor thomas M. Merrill, a leader in the ag community who passed
away last year. the gift will name the Industry Meeting room at the Center for applied technology (Cat)
building on the alisal Campus, opening in 2010. the classroom building will house numerous educational
spaces including classrooms sponsored by the Harden Foundation, Driscoll’s, and Green Giant by Grower’s
express. agriculture science laboratory rooms sponsored by Fresh express, and Chiquita Brands, and studio
classrooms sponsored by D’arrigo Bros. Co. of California, taylor Farms, pacific International Marketing and
the tanimura Family Foundation. “We are working hard to create a college that is better every year, is
fiscally sound, and serves this community. the Cat building represents hope, opportunity, access to quality
education and training for the workforce of the future” says Dr. phoebe Helm.

Timely support comes in for
Hartnell Students.
three Hartnell College partners have committed to awarding
four $20,000 scholarships for students transferring to a four year
college to continue their education.
this is no typical year and our students need assistance more than
ever. this message resonated with the peggy and Jack Baskin
Foundation, and this year the Foundation will award a $20,000
scholarship ($10,000/year) to a student at Hartnell College, thanks
to the generosity of peggy and Jack. the scholarship seeks bright,
highly motivated, underprivileged women with a strong potential
for making a difference, including women who are re-entering the
workforce. Students must be enrolled in the college and dedicated
to completing a four-year college education at any university of
California campus.
Stalwart supporters of higher education, Jack and peggy’s
involvement has extended to a number of colleges over the years.
those in the immediate area include uC Santa Cruz, Cabrillo College,
Monterey peninsula College, California State university Monterey
Bay and now, Hartnell College. Hartnell has already benefitted
from the Baskin’s support of the Baskin School of engineering
at uCSC. a number of our Hartnell science students have been
fortunate to study as interns at the Baskin School of engineering
receiving an amazing experience as undergraduates participating
in serious research. the first scholarship from the peggy and Jack
Baskin Foundation will be awarded for the Fall 2009 semester.
andy Matsui, Ceo of Matsui nursery, places high value on education and as such has created the Matsui Foundation to provide financial
aid to eligible students to obtain a four-year college degree. Since 2004, the Matsui Foundation has provided over $1.6 million in
scholarships. andy’s commitment to local families and students is a commendable example to follow. He explains his passion for
education, “I think number one is education, it’s the only way we can change anything in this world.”
this year the Foundation will once again award two $20,000 scholarships to Hartnell Students. the students must be majoring in a field
that would allow the student to promote economic development and improvements for the benefit of Monterey County upon graduation
from a four-year college. thank you andy for your vision and for your commitment to the future of Hartnell Students.
the Karl S. pister leadership opportunity program will offers a prestigious $20,000 scholarship paid over two years. the scholarship enables
a Hartnell College transfer student to complete their undergraduate studies at uC Santa Cruz. the student who receives this scholarship
will have shown exceptional achievement through academic and extracurricular activities despite adverse socioeconomic conditions. the
student will exhibit outstanding leadership qualities and will have demonstrated involvement in activities that improve the lives of others.
encouraging the transfer of students to four year institutions is an important part of the mission of Hartnell College. over 400 students
transfer each year to public and private colleges and universities. Support such as these powerful scholarships can make a very real
difference in our students’ future lives.
to make a bequest, create a charitable trust
or to join the Hartnell College legacy Society
Stuart Dufour had a
special affection for
the nursing program
and was proud of his
involvement in getting
the program started
at Hartnell.
this year the nursing
program at Hartnell
received a significant boost with two gifts: a $50,000 bequest
from the Stuart Dufour Charitable trust and a $10,000 grant from
the Barnet Segal Charitable trust that support our nursing students
with much needed scholarships.
“the state of the economy, and especially the financial sector
thereof, have made this a difficult year for everyone, but especially
for families with college students. We hope that this grant helps to
brighten the upcoming year for the Hartnell College Foundation.
please accept it as our endorsement for your efforts” say Barnet
Segal trustees, Stuart Berman and William Brodsley.
Barnet Segal Charitable trust has been supporting Hartnell’s
nursing program since 2005.
Stuart F. Dufour (1913-2007) went to San Mateo Community College before attending
Stanford university. He always felt that his years at the community college were a key
to his admission at Stanford and always had high appreciation for the junior college
system. at Stanford he majored in Communication and, upon graduation in 1934,
got a job as a reporter for the San Jose Mercury Herald. It was there that he met his
wife, Willna, also a reporter at the Mercury. they were married in 1936 and had two
children. In 1939 they moved to Salinas where he taught journalism and history at
Salinas union High School. after serving with the american red Cross during the
war, he came back to Salinas union High School. In 1946 Stuart came to Hartnell
as a journalism instructor and worked at the college with Dr. Ching from1951 until
he was selected to be junior college president in 1955. He was popular among
both students and faculty. after retirement in 1968, he and Willna enjoyed travel,
golf and investing their savings in the stock market. Many of their investments were
successful, enabling them to establish a charitable trust with proceeds given to
Hartnell, Stanford, and the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
excited“ says Jackie about her new
job.“ Education of our youth will lay
the foundation for the future of the
Salinas Valley and I feel privileged
other colleges, recruit more athletes, and allow the coaching staff to offer
the type of instruction that competing local programs have. the Baseball
western stage theatre arts CounCil
the Western State theatre arts program has gone through a major transition during the past year
to fully connect the program to the college and to the community. the Western Stage is now part
of a newly structured theater arts Department at Hartnell College. “We are hoping that this change
will facilitate development of a strong academic program in theater arts while strengthening the
Western Stage productions” says linda Gin, Chair of the Western Stage theatre arts Council. the
Western Stage continues to offer a full season of plays and musicals.
the Western Stage auxiliary has been officially transitioned to the college and the advisory and
fundraising has been transferred to the newly formed Western Stage theatre arts Council run
under the auspices of the Hartnell College Foundation. the function of the Council is to provide
support to the program in a variety of areas including formulation of program needs, fundraising,
student recruitment, and increasing community support for the program.
Some of the immediate goals of the council are to revamp and expand the youth and outreach
programs and to demonstrate a heightened level of response to the diverse needs of the
community.
as in the past, the Western Stage continues to aspire to a high level of artistic excellence. the 2009
season will open with a dramatic vaudeville about the american will to survive, the american Clock.
