We had the privilege of catching up with Dr. Cesily<br />

DeAngelo, PhD, Known as The Food Alchemist and<br />

owner of Veggies Become U. For several years we<br />

have watched her blossom her business and<br />

ventures or should I say adventures. Dr. Sessy as<br />

she is affectionately called sat with <strong>Plus</strong> <strong>Size</strong><br />

<strong>Wellness</strong> (PSW) <strong>Magazine</strong> publisher Tonya L.<br />

Keatz, for an interview and to share some dynamic<br />

nuggets with our readers.<br />

PSW: Greetings, Dr. Sessy. Welcome to <strong>Plus</strong><br />

<strong>Size</strong> <strong>Wellness</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong>. You are such a<br />

dynamic metaphysician, Tell us about your<br />

spiritual and family background.<br />

Greetings, Tonya and everyone, I grew up in a Christian Baptist home and that is my foundation. When I<br />

got older, I knew there was more to life and I went on a spiritual quest. I took Queen Afua’s Sacred<br />

Woman course and can proudly say I am a Sacred Woman. Taking the classes opened me up to the<br />

Kemetic teachings. I then began studying and practicing Smai Tawi under Heru Ankh Ra Semajh Se Ptah<br />

in Brooklyn, New York. The information of knowing who I am was interesting. Growing up we were taught<br />

that our people were slaves that came over to the America’s on a boat and that was it. However, studying<br />

Smai Tawi opened my mind to astrology, our ancient diet and so much more.<br />

When I got to know more about the history of Black people. I began studying and knew there was<br />

something out there. We had such great millionaires like Madame C.J. Walker, John Hanson and Marie<br />

Laveaux.<br />

PSW: You are The Food Alchemist. When did your love for food<br />

and health begin?. Also share with us how Veggies Become U<br />

began.<br />

As time went on and I began to evolve, I enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America. When I<br />

attended back in the mid 1990’s, there were few chefs of color at the school and I was the only<br />

vegan. Of course you know they prepare meat. However, when I attended I had not eaten meat for<br />

five years. Though, that wasn’t such a big issue for me. The greater issue was the fact that all<br />

students had to eat the meals prepared by the students, as this was included in the cost of tuition.<br />

Now mind you. Though they had us prepare meals according to diet restriction such as the Zone<br />

Diet and Atkins Diet. They had not heard of vegan’s before then. Well that offered me the<br />

opportunity to teach the instructors and students about veganism. The school allowed me to<br />

prepare my own vegan meals for lunch. Though it was limited due to the condiments and food<br />

items available. Either way, I made it work and because of me and my veganism, they now have a<br />

vegan menu included in the Culinary Institute of America’s course.
