2010-2011 annual report

WOmen AgAinSt AbuSe
miSSiOn StAtement
Revised by the Board of Directors in 2010
the mission of Women against abuse
is to provide quality, compassionate and
nonjudgmental services in a manner that
fosters self-respect and independence in
persons experiencing intimate partner
violence, and to lead the struggle to end
domestic violence through advocacy and
community education.
Contributors, Colleagues and Friends:
as we embark on our 35th year as a leading advocate for survivors
of domestic violence, we celebrate our community partners, who
work collaboratively to create a system of safety and support for
each survivor.
From working with law enforcement and hospitals to improve
philadelphia’s response to domestic violence; to partnering with
local schools to promote healthy teen relationships; to working
with the City to provide safe housing for families that have fled
their homes to escape from abuse, community partnerships
underscore our work and are the key to our success.
the support of community partners is essential to preserve our
core services and continue to deepen our impact.
over the past year, community leaders have partnered with us to
raise nearly $2.5 million toward the renovation and expansion of
Sojourner House, our transitional housing program. We extend
our warmest thanks to the many legislators, and public and private
grant makers that have joined us in this important initiative.
this project will help to fulfill a critical need in philadelphia by
providing additional domestic violence housing, and is a testament
to the inspiring impact that a community of supporters can make.
thank you for joining with us on the vitally important work of
building peaceful communities, one family and one home at a time.
Advocating Everyday,
Jeannine l. lisitski
Executive Director
Recent HigHligHts
• Organized an advocacy day in
Harrisburg for shelter residents.
Survivors were empowered to
speak with state legislators on
their own behalf.
• Successfully lobbied against
a presumed joint custody bill
that would have endangered
the safety of domestic violence
survivors with children.
• Raised 95% of the $2.5 million
needed to rehabilitate and
expand Sojourner House.
throughout the past year, Women Against Abuse has been
involved in several collaborations designed to improve the
City’s response to domestic violence. Highlighted here is a
brief sampling of the agency’s many partnerships.
one of the most significant initiatives is a police
telephone outreach project that has the potential to
decrease domestic homicides by creating early access
to intervention and services for the more than 100,000
domestic violence calls that police receive each year.
Women against abuse worked with the philadelphia
police Department and other community stakeholders
to create a new reporting form for domestic violence
police calls in order to capture evidence that can be
used in court to hold abusers accountable. police are
also providing Women against abuse with a safe
number to reach the victim. through this partnership,
Women against abuse is able to immediately contact
the victim to offer safety planning and support. this
pilot project has proven highly successful in three of
the City’s six police divisions, and we are now seeking
additional funding to continue this project and
expand it citywide.
Women against abuse has also made strides in the
healthcare sector. the agency and its community
stakeholders convened local hospital emergency
department to develop a citywide best practice model
for how healthcare personnel can screen for domestic
violence among patients. In addition, the Hospital of
the university of pennsylvania has added the Women
against abuse ipledge Campaign – an antiviolence
initiative – to its discharge papers. through this
partnership, the hospital’s 60,000 patients will have
the opportunity to sign a pledge against using or
condoning violence!
iPledge Press conference 2010:
the iPledge campaign is a citywide anti-violence
movement which calls on ordinary Philadelphians
to help end violence at home and in the community.
