FESTIVAL
Focus Wales
Various venues, Wrexham – 11/05-13/05
FOCUS is Wales’ premier music conference, attracting
thousands of visitors each year with its lure of talks
from some of the most exciting and informative faces in
music, as well as some of Britain’s very best independent
bands. This year’s conference main draw is a keynote speech
from legendary DJ, videographer and musician, DON LETTS
who will provide an insight into his career. From filming videos
for The Clash at the height of punk to hosting his own show on
BBC 6Music, Letts will reveal all on his long and colourful life.
Alongside the main man himself, comes talks from all aspects of
the industry including managers, record label owners, promoters,
publishers and writers. Offering up a wealth of knowledge in their
expert areas, it’s set to provide a useful insight for anyone looking
to get a better grasp on the industry.
Alongside the conference, Focus boasts over 200
performances across 20 stages including showcases from
around the world. This year the festival welcomes indie veterans
BRITISH SEA POWER as headliners, plus Cardiff’s grime punks
ASTROID BOYS, Super Furry Animals’ Guto’s GULP and mystic
experimentalists CASTLES amongst its extensive line-up.
Bido Lito! are also happy to be hosting our very own
showcase, consisting of three of our favorite Merseyside acts
who’ll be flying the flag for the Republic of Liverpool: featuring
GINTIS (playing Saith Seren on Friday 12th May), MARY MILLER
(UnDegUn, Saturday 13th May) and KATIE MAC (The Royal Oak,
Friday 12th May). Abergele-cum-Liverpool quintet Gintis create
oddball folk complete with existential and often humourous
lyrics. Recording their next release with Bill Ryder-Jones, the
show will be a sneak glimpse at what’s in store. Meanwhile,
Mary Miller will be providing some of the best new trip hop
we’ve heard in quite some time in an utterly spellbinding live
show, while Huyton’s Katie Mac will be belting out her steely,
melodic ballads.
The crossover of conference and music is what makes Focus
Wales a truly special event, all within a 40-minutes drive from
Liverpool.
Writing On The Wall
Various venues – 01/05-31/05
Taking hold of the city with their groundbreaking literary
and cultural festival each May, WRITING ON THE WALL
returns for 2017 with a series of events lined up around
the theme of ‘Revolution’. Kicking off with their alternative
Mayday Parade, they’ll bring to life Liverpool activist and author
George Garrett, marching a giant figure of the historical, workingclass
writer through the city, inviting communities across
Merseyside to join them in shouting about austerity, homelessness
and discrimination. Going global, on 4th May, a lead figure in the
Standing Rock protest, Indigenous Water Protector THOMAS
TONATIUH LOPEZ will appear at the Black-E, to discuss the crucial
Native American resistance against the building of an oil pipeline,
and its reverberations for worldwide environmentalism.
With a programme that encompasses politics and art, on
5th May, WOW team up with us Bido folk to bring Rough Trade
Records founder GEOFF TRAVIS to the Bluecoat for an evening of
conversation and celebration of music’s independent spirit. Then
they’re back at the Black-E on 6th May with Time For Action!, for
a day of discussion on fake news, austerity, Brexit, and just about
anything else troubling you can think of. The event will bring
together voices as diverse as rapper and poet AKALA, stand-up
comedian and writer FRANCESCA MARTINEZ, journalist and
broadcaster GARY YOUNGE, and former Green Party leader,
NATALIE BENNETT, so it’s definitely one for your politico-cultural
diaries.
Elsewhere, BBC Radio Merseyside’s cult hero ROGER HILL will
host Punk Survivors at Leaf on 12th May, bringing together STEVE
IGNORANT of Crass, dub pioneer and videographer DON LETTS,
and PAULINE MURRAY, lead singer with Penetration. Topped
off with a talk from the inimitable COSEY FANNI TUTTI, the
Throbbing Gristle artist will be discussing her recently-published
autobiography Art Sex Music. The WOWsters have also marked
20th May as Indie-pendence Day as they host a series of events
at the Black-E devoted to exploring independent publishing,
new platforms in the digital age, and current options for budding
writers. Take note.
