Letter from
Ms Haydon, Principal
At Surbiton High School we are fortunate
to boast a huge Co-curricular programme.
All the clubs, ensembles, teams and
societies are a major part of School life.
We are committed to providing an outstanding all round
education and life beyond the classroom is an essential part
of what we offer. We believe that Co-curricular activities
broaden horizons and instil a sense of adventure, leadership,
teamwork and decision-making, complementing what goes
on in the classroom. Details of all our activities can be found
in the pages of this booklet.
I hope your son will take advantage of the range of
Co-curricular interests available to him.
Art
Each art session is based on a famous artist or
art form. We learn a few facts about the artist’s
technique and life and then the students create
their own interpretation of what we have looked
at. This includes Sculpture, Painting, Drawing
2D and 3D. Art club can be enjoyed by all, either
as a time to have fun as there is no right or wrong
way to paint, or as a place to help your child
work on his skills and portfolio if he wants to
apply for an Art Scholarship.
Residential
Trips
Throughout Key Stage 2 the boys have the opportunity to take part in one of the residential
trips which usually take place during the Summer term. The aim of each trip is to teach the
boys new skills which will be added to as they progress through Key Stage 2 and to provide
them with numerous opportunities. The planned residential trips are listed below:
• Year 3 - a 2 day/1 night visit to Juniper Hall, Dorking (approximately £150)
• Year 4 - a 3 day/2 nights visit to PGL, Little Canada, Isle of Wight (approximately £320)
• Year 5 - a 4 day/3 nights visit to Stella Maris, France (approximately £430)
• Year 6 - a 5 day/4 nights visit to Bushcraft, Dorset (approximately £480)
We have gradually increased the length of the trips as the boys move through the School to ensure
that as they get older they become more confident with staying away from their families.

House System
The House system is an important part of
School life. Each of the boys belongs to
one of three Houses – Arundel, Balmoral
and Caernarvon. There are a number of
competitions across the year in which the
boys compete against each other while
representing their House. These contests
may vary each term. The year culminates
in a House Sports Day, in which all pupils
from both the Girls’ Prep and the Boys’
Prep Schools participate.
Each House is led by a teacher and a
House Captain and Deputy. The Year 6
boys are given the opportunity to put
themselves forward as the most eligible
candidates to lead their House to victory.
The elected captains are responsible for
leading their House for the rest of the year.
Throughout each term, all the boys in the
School are keen to receive House points that
go towards the weekly totals. On an individual
basis, boys also receive awards of bronze, silver,
gold and platinum to celebrate their hard work
and exemplary behaviour.

CLUBS AND
ACTIVITIES
At Surbiton High Boys’
Preparatory School we actively
encourage and support boys
to participate in a range
of fundraising activities.
Numerous fundraising events
are held and celebrated
throughout the year,
reinforcing the School’s motto,
‘May love always lead us’ and
supporting the ethos to serve
and respect others.
At the start of the
academic year,
all boys are given
the opportunity to
nominate a charity for
the School to support
over the course of
a term. They are
required to present to
the School Council
a short presentation,
detailing the reasons
why the charity is important to them
and the reasons why we should choose
the charity. The School Council
then proceed to shortlist four or five
charities. These charities will then be
presented in front of the whole school.
The pupils then select three charities
for the following year to support.
We try, wherever possible, to invite
a representative from the charity to
present an assembly to the School in
order to broaden the boys’ knowledge
of the importance of the charity. We
also actively encourage and celebrate
individual boys’ fundraising initiatives
through assemblies.
Breakfast and
After School Club
The clubs take place in the Dining Hall of the Surbiton Assembly
Rooms and are supervised by qualified staff with a ratio of one staff
member to eight children. The clubs take place each day during
term time and provide a safe, happy environment for your child.
The Breakfast Club is available to all pupils from
7.30am until the start of your child’s school day.
A nutritious breakfast is available until 8.15am.
This includes a choice of cereal, toast, yoghurt
and fruit juice. Pupils are escorted to their
School for the start of their School day.
The After School Club is available from the
end of your child’s School day until 6pm. A
healthy snack is offered, including freshly
made sandwiches, fruit and vegetables. There
is a homework and study area and, at the end
of the afternoon, staff-supervised films and
educational games.
Both clubs offer a variety of activities such as art
and craft, construction kits, role play, board games
and sport. If you are interested in using the clubs
and have not already completed the Registration
Form, please contact our Breakfast and After
School Club Manager, Mrs Fiona Meaney, via email
at afterschoolclub@surbitonhigh.com.
All children do need to be registered (a completed
Registration Form together with the £10
registration administration fee and passport
photographs of the pupil and all adult collectors)
before they can use the facility.
Bookings
Bookings for each term can be made via email:
afterschoolclub@surbitonhigh.com and you are
able to make reservations for three options:
Session 2: 4.30pm – 6.00pm
Both sessions: 3.00pm – 6.00pm
When making your booking, please give your
child’s name and class. Please also take into
consideration any before or after school clubs
term. It is possible to make bookings for the
Cancellations and Fees
As the clubs are very popular, if you have booked a
place but do not need to use it, then please do let us
know via email (afterschoolclub@surbitonhigh.com)
so that we may allocate the space to another pupil. 24
hours’ notice is required to cancel bookings and there
is a £16 charge made when places are booked but not
taken up, with the exception of emergencies. Parents
will be charged for late collection at a rate of £20.
Fees for both clubs are added to the termly invoice,
in arrears. Current charges are £6.75 for the Breakfast
Club. The After School Club has a minimum charge
of £6.20 for the first hour and afterwards is charged
in 15 minute blocks of £1.55 per 15 minutes. There is
a one-off £10 registration fee.
Holiday Gymnastic
Club
During the holiday periods the gymnastics
coaching staff run a gym club. The sessions are
divided into two age groups: KS1 and KS2, which
will cater for all ages and abilities. We will work
on the basics of movement and balance in KS1 and
then move onto more advanced jumps, rolls and
sequences in KS2. We will also introduce some
pair and group work for both age groups, as well
as some fun gymnastic-based games as part of the
warm up and cool down.
