WHAT EXACTLY IS BIRD'S EYE PIQUÉ?
To help, we've provided a brief A-to-Z glossary of terms used by HAKRO.
What exactly do quality marks such as STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX ® , and "Cotton made in Africa"
mean? The following list describes our main forms of certification.
BUSINESS SOCIAL COMPLIANCE
INITIATIVE (BSCI)
As a BSCI member, since 2012 we've been taking
action to significantly improve working and social conditions
at our production facilities. We require our suppliers
to comply with the provisions of the BSCI Code of
Conduct. These set standards in terms of management
practices, working hours and pay levels, the banning of
child labour, freedom of assembly, avoidance of discrimination,
and workplace health and safety. Independent inspectors
carry out local checks to ensure that our production
partners are adhering to the Code.
COTTON MADE IN AFRICA (CMIA)
This initiative supports African cotton farmers
and their families. Instead of relying on donations,
it involves the activation of market forces and therefore
plays a vital role in promoting self-reliance. HAKRO is
a member of a network of companies that purchase via the
CmiA ("Cotton made in Africa") scheme, supporting agrcultural
training courses and social projects through licensing
fees.
GOTS
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
is the leading global standard for processing
textiles from organically produced natural fibres. It
sets down environmental requirements covering the entire
textile production chain and specifies compulsory social
criteria. The T-shirts and polo shirts in the HAKRO Organic
Collection are made of 100% organic cotton and are
certified in line with the Global Organic Textile Standard
(GOTS). Certification by CERES (licence number 0388).
ISO 9001 – SYSTEMATIC QUALITY
HAKRO's quality management system has been
certified as compliant with the ISO 9001 standard
by TÜV Süd in Germany. ISO 9001 is the most important
domestic and international standard in the field of quality
management. It forms the basis for our continuous internal
improvement process.
STANDARD 100 BY OEKO-TEX ®
The "Trust in Textiles" symbol indicates
compliance with STANDARD 100 by
OEKO-TEX ® . This is an independent testing and certification
system covering raw materials, secondary materials
and end products at all stages of textile processing. The
tests involved cover substances that are banned or regulated
by law and those that are known to be damaging
health. Every HAKRO garment is labelled with this quality
mark.
"REACH" CONFORMITY
As part of the product certification process for
STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX ® , we guarantee
that all substances used fulfil the requirements of the European
chemicals regulation known as "REACH" (Registration,
Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals).
TEXTILE
PARTNERSHIP
As a member of the
Partnership for Sustainable Textiles, HAKRO has committed
to take active steps to implement the Partnership's
overriding goal: to enhance the social, economic and environmental
conditions along the entire supply chain of the
textile and clothing sector in a demonstrable way.
UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT
In 2009, HAKRO became a signatory of the
United Nations Global Compact, thus joining
the world's largest alliance for responsible
trading. The ten principles of the Global Compact set
standards for compliance with human rights and the implementation
of international labour principles, for environmental
protection, for taking action against child labour
and for preventing corruption. Each year we issue
progress reports on the actions we have taken in support
of the ten principles.
BREATHABLE
A fabric can be said to be breathable when the material
is capable of wicking water vapour from the inside to
the outside. The breathability level is specified by the garment's
MVTR (moisture vapour transmission rate). This
describes the amount of water that can vaporise through
one square metre over the course of 24 hours. The greater
the amount, the higher the breathability rating for the
garment.
BIRD'S EYE PIQUÉ
Bird's eye piqué is a special embroidery technique that
creates a set of equally sized indentations.
"NO IRON" LABELLING
Shirts and blouses with a "No iron" label are easy to care
for and can be worn straight after being washed and dried.
To assist with this, you should take the garment out of the
drier when it's still slightly damp and allow it to dry off on
a clothes airer.
COTTON
The quality of a particular variety of cotton depends mainly
on the fibre length. In the textile industry, this is known as
the "staple length". The longer the fibre, the finer and more
hard-wearing the cotton. HAKRO uses only combed cotton
with a staple length of at least 30mm.
CLEVER CARE
This is an initiative of the International Association for Textile
Care Labelling (GINETEX) related to the topic of washing,
drying, ironing and professional textile care. http://

COOLMAX®
A high-tech functional fabric belonging to the Invista brand
that optimally regulates body heat. Its special 4 or 6-channelled
fibres wick moisture directly to the surface of the
material, where it evaporates extremely quickly. For maximum
wearability, in our products we use only the most effective
variant, known as COOLMAX ® EXTREME.
COTTON-TEC
COTTON-TEC is a double-faced material in which the exterior
is made of unusually fine cotton and the interior consists
of the functional fibre TRIACTIVE ® . Because the fabric
rapidly wicks moisture to the outside of the garment, it has
a temperature-regulating effect.
PRE-SHRUNK
Pre-shrinking is a thermo-mechanical textile treatment. It
ensures that the garment is slightly shrunk within specific
tolerances.
