TRUE LEADERS 2017 Virginia Briggs Chair of NSW Women and Diversity Committee V irginia Briggs – Chair of NSW Women and Diversity Committee at Property Council Australia and Partner at MinterEllison is taking the driving seat in showcasing the importance of workplace diversity. For some time now, the PCA have been running a number of initiatives for women such as a leadership course specifi cally designed to improve their skills in terms of career progression into leadership positions. “The committee that I lead has a pipeline program that we are working on at the moment. We are going to have a ‘Girls in Property Week’ next year which we will be running in conjunction with the NSW Department of Education. This program is designed to engage with girls in year 8 and year 10 as this is the stage that they will begin picking their future careers. We want to educate and inspire them with all the different things that they can do in property.” In addition to this, the PCA have been instrumental in the setting up of the Property Male Champions of Change which brings together senior leaders across the industry to improve gender equality. The PCA have also produced the program “100 Women in Property” where senior women sponsor more junior women in the industry to encourage them into attending networking events. “It is not a charity issue; it is a business issue.” “For years I have been to events where I have been the only woman in the room and that has been diffi cult. In its earlier years, it was a hard industry to network in. The more senior I became in the industry, the less diffi cult it was because a lot of my clients are men and when I walked into a room I would know people, but I can imagine that would be quite intimidating to break into.” The PCA now makes sure that with any lunches or seminars, that there is a panel pledge where a certain number of women are always on the panel. Skirting around the intrepid industry buzzword of ‘positive discrimination’, Virginia mentions: “For many years I wasn’t a supporter of quotas and argued that people should just get there on merit. Relying on merit is just not enough. I have totally changed my thinking in that we absolutely need quotas, even more than we need targets. We need women in these positions because there will be people who are just as capable as the men but might not be promoted due to a conscious or unconscious bias.” “Organisations need to get to the point where they truly believe that having a diverse workforce, in terms of gender, race, age and sexual orientation is when you actually great business outcomes.
