LAST EDITION’S ENGLISH CHALLENGE: LAST EDITION’S MATH PROBLEM:
This Edition’s English Challenge
Congratulations
to Kiamba Rogers
who matched the
answers correctly.
Kiamba has won
herself a $20
iTunes card.
I had (an accident - almost but not really) this
morning when my car almost hit a fence.
( )a cave in
( )a change of heart
( )a close call
( )clean slate
Preparing students for a life of worth ...
Not merely a life of work.
The winner from our last edition was Chelsea Klein.
Chelsea has claimed her $20 iTunes card.
The odd numbers starting from 1 can be arranged in rows
according to the following pattern. The first number of the
n th row can be shown to be n² ‐ n + 1.
What is the expression in terms of n for the last number in
row n and what is the last number of the 20 th row?
Chelsea’s answer:
N 2 - n + 1 + 2(n-1)
Last number in row= N 2 + n -1
Last number in 20 th row= 20 2 + 19
= 419
THIS EDITION’S MATHS CHALLENGE:
On a bookshelf there are 6 history books,
7 novels, 2 dictionaries and 5 sporting
books.
If Theo selects one at random, what is the
probability that the book chosen is not a
"Masks have been part of human celebrations since
primitive man picked up an animal head and put it on to act
out the hunt prior to sharing in the bounty of the kill.
Their use grew from these simple celebratory stories to the
telling stories of creation, ritual practice, use in theatre,
opera and dance." quoted from Jonathan Becker of Theatre
– Masks.com. In class, as part of our SOSE Multicultural Unit,
we have been examining different cultures and the way in
which they celebrate different events. Many cultures used
masks as part of their celebrations and we attempted to
create some of them and describe how they could be used.
Junior Sports News
Term 4 will be very busy with four after school sports being
offered. Rookies to Reds (Rugby Union), Net Set Go!
(Netball) plus two Active After School Communities Sports
will all be running. Keep an eye out for information coming
home before the holidays and early next term. I also
attended the Maryborough Sports Expo and collected
information about the Summer Sports on offer. I will be
sharing this information with the students, putting
information up on the noticeboard and sending home
information with interested students. Thanks Nicki Hutley
Year 4/5 Camp
This is what Year 4 and 5 students had to say about
their camp in Week 8 when they went to Mapleton:
We went on the giant swing and when I got to the top I was
so scared, when I dropped everyone said I had a shocked
face. We did orienteering after lunch, it was hard and we
got lost but found a few flags. Then we went canoeing and
Jacob Jones and Charlie ran into Ava and me in our canoe
and it tipped at the front slightly and my leg went in the
water. By Amy Lewis 4D
My favourite activity was the climbing wall because when I
got to the top it was then fun climbing down. You can also
make it harder or easier with each go. I liked the night
games of knights, mounts and cavaliers because it was a
funny competition. The bush walks were awesome, it would
be fun to have more of them. By Courtney Robinson 5L
The night time activities were heaps of fun to do and
Riverside's Got Talent was so funny to watch especially the
boys who did the Wonkey Donkey song and dance. During
the day we went for a bush walk but some people got hurt
even Mr Bentley but luckily we all came out alive. Saxon
took a picture of the survivors. By Tahlia Burns 4D
When we went canoeing it was so much fun. By the end Bet
and I were saturated because Riley and Mr Ross were
splashing all of us. We had a lot of fun with archery, I did not
hit the target at all. So on the last day we did the biggest
bush walk in my life, it was fun and I slept so well that night.
Then we had to go back to school. By Trinity Hart 4W
I loved the climbing wall because it was the hardest thing to
do at camp. The boys doing the “wonkey donkey” song were
so funny to watch. The teachers should have got up and
done something for the Talent show though and then it
would have been better. By David Perry 5L
When we went orienteering it was very hard and
complicated but also fun. We all enjoyed it.
Assignment Submissions
Assignments/Assessment Tasks are an essential part
of the College’s assessment regime. There appears
to be an increasing number of students who are
failing to submit their class assignments on the due
date. It is an expectation of the College that all
assignments are completed and submitted to
Student Reception, on time. The T3 Middle College
Assessment Schedule has been posted on all Form
Class pages on Powerhouse for your reference.
Non‐submission results in grade penalties (unless
extension requests have been approved prior to the
due date). In the case of illness, students must
provide a note from parents and, in some cases, a
medical certificate. Students who fail to submit their
assignments will be withdrawn from classes in order
to complete them.
Contraband reminders
Of late, there have been several cases of students
bringing the following banned items to school:
Aerosols (deodorants and perfumes etc)
Mascara (and other make‐up)
Liquid Paper (in bottles and pens)
Non‐prescription medication (eg. Panadol)
Students have been reminded that these items are
not to be brought to school and we would like
parents to reinforce this. If found at school, these
items will be immediately confiscated and held in
Reception. Only parents may collect these items.
MIDDLE COLLEGE News
The Year 12 students are planning a pizza lunch
and games time with the Year 8 classes on
Monday, 17 September.
For a cost of $5 students will be supplied with
2 pieces of pizza and a drink.
Letter home regarding this was sent on
3 September.
Book Day reminder
Our end of term celebration is drawing closer! Students
are encouraged to come to school on the final day of
Term 3 dressed as an appropriate book character. If not
in costume, students must wear their sports uniform to
school. The College will provide a free lunch to all
students, but we are asking that students bring a small
plate of morning tea to share (please be aware of
possible food allergies).
Students will engage in a variety of book‐related
activities throughout the day, in celebration of the
National Year of Reading.
End of Term
As the end of term approaches, students are reminded to
replenish their stocks of stationery over the holidays
– notebooks, pens, pencils etc.
LEGAL MATTERS
Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Judy
Millward from Morton & Morton Solicitors.
Kiamba Rogers is pictured above presenting Judy
with a thank you gift. Judy was kind enough to visit
Senior Legal Studies and answer lots of
pre‐examination questions about matters that the
students were doing revision on, including online
defamation and negligence cases.
Last week a group of Year 11’s went to the Brisbane
Writers Festival to do a workshop with a published
Icelandic Poet Angela Rawlings. Her first book is
called Wide Slumber for Lepidopterists.
In our workshop with Angela she taught us how to
use everyday objects, sounds and texts to create
unique pieces of poetry.
News from the CHAPLAIN
DEDICATION
At Riverside Christian College the culture within our school is driven by our RiSe
CoDe. This is a set of character traits we value and aim to see expressed in the
lives of our staff and students. The RiSe CoDe consists of Right Choices, Service,
Compassion and finally Dedication. When all these are expressed in our lives we
believe we see a reflection of Jesus and an expression of God’s Love.
Not only do we want students to show dedication to their academic work, we also
want to see students apply dedication to all area of their lives whether it be
sporting, spiritual, creative expression as well as social support for their peers.
When we are dedicated to each other and to supporting each other in life’s
journey we become a living, breathing expression of God’s Love, and this is a
noble purpose to be dedicated to.
Dedication:
The quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose; faithfulness, loyalty; wholly committed to
something, as an ideal, political cause, or personal goal; having single‐minded loyalty or integrity;
consecrate, commit, devote.
We would love to hear what you think about today’s
parenting support options. Do you use the internet and
Researchers at the University of Queensland are
interested in finding out parents’ preferences for
parenting support, and their use of different
information sources, including websites and social
media. We are conducting a large Australia‐wide survey
to investigate how technology has changed parenting
support and to find ways to improve advice services for
parents in the future. If you have a 2‐12 year old child,
please spare 20 minutes to complete the anonymous
REMEMBER
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
It is the time of year when we are again encouraging families to
become involved in the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ project.
This is overseen by Samaritan’s Purse; an international,
interdenominational Christian Relief Organisation led by
Franklin Graham. Operation Christmas Child encourages people
of all ages to fill shoe boxes with toys and small gifts to be
delivered to children who are victims of war, persecution,
poverty, disease and natural disasters. Last year, over 300,000
boxes were sent from Australia and New Zealand to countries
such as Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Fiji,
Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. Over 2,000 boxes were sent
from the Maryborough/Hervey Bay area.
You may like to fill a box at home or students may enjoy filling
one together as a class activity.
Whose life will your shoe box change this year?
IMPORTANT POINTS:
Please use average size shoe boxes (30cm by 18cm). You may
use your own or there will be boxes available at the College.
Decorate boxes with Christmas paper but the lid must be
wrapped separately so that it can be removed. Seal box with
a rubber band.
Decide whether the box is for a boy or girl and which age group.
Fill the box with gifts appropriate to sex and age group.
Coloured leaflets with a list of suitable items, ‘Boy’ or ‘Girl’ label
and donation envelopes will be available from the College.
Take note of items that may not be included. There are changes
this year: no lollies, toothpaste, earrings, liquids, batteries,
playing cards (see leaflet for full details of exclusions).
Handling costs are $9.00. Donations can be made online. If you
choose to use cash or cheque, please use the envelope
provided and place INSIDE the box on TOP of the items.
Boxes may come in without donations or you may prefer to
make a donation only.
All boxes must be returned to the College by
Wednesday 17 October.
We look forward to receiving your boxes over the
next few weeks. Bring them to G Block.
WASTE MANAGEMENT AT RIVERSIDE
Riverside students are asked to put their rubbish in
different bins in order for the College to better
manage our waste. 3 bins are available in eating
areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at home),
red top bins for garbage that can't be reused or
recycled, and small green top bins for food waste that
can be composted. Our aim is to
decrease our 'landfill' rubbish by 1/3, simply by
recycling and composting.
Please encourage your child/ren to put their
rubbish in the correct bins.
MULTI‐PURPOSE HALL & COMPUTER LAB
