Proofreading is really important when writing any task.
Most students now re ly on spell check. When completing
the QCS, students have no access to computers, so they
must re ly on their own skills. The students are also marked
on how well they have written their piece in regards to
grammar, spelling and punctua tion.
Shakespeare eventually became the most popular playright
whistle that has a frequency of 1200 Hz. Other students
standing on the side of the road hear the noise as the ca r
Colonisation Conversations
Riverside students in Year 4 examined the life of
Indigenous people before and after colonisation.
Trinity Hart had this to write about colonisation,
"Colonisation means the start of a new
community. The first colonies to start in Australia
were made up of British people, convicts,
explorers and free settlers. In 1788, the British first
fleet of ships had 1500 people and 60 000 convicts.
These kept arriving until 1868. The first colony was
in Sydney."
Chelsea Roberts looked at the differences for the
lives of Indigenous people before colonisation and
after colonisation. "We discussed how they used to
make lots of things and get a lot out from nature.
Like materials for their homes, cooking equipment,
clothes, musical instruments and food."
Noah Martin had this to say from wha t he had
learnt, "The British people forced them to change
and live like white people. I don't think that was
right."
The class also
enjoyed designing
and making
Indigenous model
shelters which they
also showed to
Year12 students
who had lots of
wonderful encouragement and feedback for
Year 4 students.
normal and taken to the Tinana Athletics Oval.
Comments from Year 4
“School Camp should be great! Years 4 and 5 from Rivers ide are
going to School Camp on Monday August 27 until Wednesday
August 29. I am really excited. There are going to be fun activities
like giant swings, archery, bush skills and orienteering. That is a lot,
isn’t it? We sleep there for 2 days. We will get there on a school
bus. Adam Bull said, “I am very happy about going on school camp,
it should be great.”
We will sleep in separate rooms for boys and girls. It will be at
Mapleton in the mountains. We are all looking forward to it.”
“The Amazing Disco! The College disco on Thursday June 14 was
incredible and heaps of people were there. There were two funny
dances, they were the Chicken Dance and the Macarena. It was at
the Hall from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for Prep to Year 5. At the end of
the disco we all got a packet of chips and a popper. They had a
Photo Booth that was $1 per person or g roup. Rose Browning‐Reid
had this to say about this years disco, “I wouldn’t change a thing
about this years disco.” “My best friend went to the disco. “ said
Jorja Hood. People worked very hard to organise the disco. There
was a fog machine on the stage. Three teachers were there to
judge on how good people danced. Not everyone got a prize for
best dance. Everyone had fun. You should have been there.”
Written by Paris Berry 4W
“Awesome Brolga Time! Every Tuesday heaps of people from the
Riverside Ensemble group go to the music room with Miss Kathryn
Marshall to practise for big events. Like when we went to perform
at the Brolga, they all had to practise like crazy. Beth Dale had this
to say about the Brolga, “It was sort of nice and my favourite songs
were Tumba and John Ryan’s Polka.”
Middle College Youth Trek Afternoon
MUD, ROPES, MUD, NETS, MUD, BOATS, MUD,
CHALLENGE….. DID WE MENTION MUD?
In the last week of Term 2 all Middle College leaders
participated in an afternoon of leadership activities by
completing the Youth Trek course at Aldershot Scout
grounds. Youth Trek is an Outdoor Educa tion program
designed to increase confidence, discover leadership
abilities, test coping skills and build team spirit.
Students pa rticipated in small team building activities
like the giant tug of war and the toxic wall challenge
followed by the obsta cle course. Mr. Ross, Mrs.
McCarthy and Ms. Matthew were very pleased when it
rained for the 3 days prior to the obstacle course as it
meant all students were going to be getting very dirty.
(see pictures) All students participated very well,
displaying lots of courage and determination. The
Middle College should be very proud of their leaders.
Well done!!!
20 of our top Year 8 Math students were lucky enough
to take part in a Maths Enrichment Day. The day began
with our team captains, Curtis, Alysha, Robert, and Matt
P, giving a brief history of their team’s namesake. After
learning about Pascal, Archimedes, Euler and
Pythagoras we were all a little in awe of the beauty of
Mathematics when we looked at Fibonacci and how his
theory is represented in Architecture, nature and
history. It was then down to business with a game of
dice prisoners, relays and potentate of the rose. We
were pumped and the day was quickly disappearing so
after a quick feast of pizza we got straight back into it
with fast money, mental guru semi finals, maths bingo
and some extra challenging problems. However, a
competition is not a competition without a grand
final! Our two top players from mental guru went head
to head with some tricky mental computation
questions. Team Pascal fought ha rd but the winner of
the day was team Archimedes. Congra tulations to all
our participants it was a day that was enjoyed by all.
A huge thank you to Mr and Mrs Garnett who have
been running this event from Brisbane to Gympie for
many years.
This letter was received recently ....
Dear Principal
As you may know, one of your students, Verity Simpson,
is currently undergoing a Traineeship with the Brolga
Theatre. Verity worked on the internationa lly acclaimed
Men in Pink Tights show, which was held at the theatre
last night. The Production Manager for the show has
written to me today to thank our technical team for their
professionalism and support. They made special
mention of Verity which I thought should be brought to
your attention. Kind regards,
Year 11 Leadership Camp
Last week, a group of the Year Eleven students, along
with Mrs White, Mr Slater and Mrs Meyers, visited the
Luther Heights Youth Camp in Coolum Beach. The idea of
the camp was to form stronger bonds of friendship,
along with leadership and communication skills.
We left from Riverside early in the morning, arriving at
the camp at around 9:30am. The 3 days were spent
getting to know each other as leaders and fellow
classmates, through multiple group activities, such as
‘Mission Impossible’, the flying fox and a high or mid
ropes course; all of which re quired cooperation and
communication from every member. We also broke into
smaller groups, participating in games and activities,
testing both physical and mental focus. On the last night,
we were presented with a speech on leadership. The
presentation focused on self‐worth, with a background
of Christianity, supporting the leadership roles that the
Year Elevens will come into in 2013. Although plagued by
rain, the camp produced many new friendships, and
provided a strong basis of ‘kfc’ – kindness, fun, and
communication, which we will all certainly value in the
future!
Considering a Gap Year ? Looking for a break after
school to travel, volunteer or earn some money?
Whatever you decide, the Cons idering a Gap Year
event will support students to develop an essential
plan on how they want to spend their gap year and
what they want to get out of it.
Love Crosses Culture
During the first week of this term I had the privilege of being asked to help lead a
Mission trip to the remote communities of Normanton and Doomadgee. A good
friend of mine is the CEO of an International Humanitarian Aid Organisation
called World Hope Network, and World Hope Network has been sending a team
to these communities for the past 7 years. As a member of the first team to go
to Normanton I formed a friendship with the local Indigenous Pastor and a few
years later moved to Norma nton with my family and worked alongside the
Indigenous community. This year the World Hope Network Team consisted of
people from many different cultural backgrounds; Vietnamese, Russian, Pakistani, Aboriginal and Maltese.
An Indigenous choir of young school children travelled from Mount Druitt, Sydney along with some of their community
elders. The purpose behind all these people from many different cultures travelling to remote Queensland was to
express God’s love and to show that love crosses cultural borders. It does not matter what we look like on the outside,
God sees the heart of each person and wants to show them how great His Love is.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son”. John 3:16
stories have been fused to create a very entertaining story about the Emperor (Tristin Miller), full of courage and hope for
his people. But when war breaks out he is devastated at the result and he looses all his belief in himself. When praying he
was visited by a guardian (Jacy Hyland) and the Dragon Tamer. Telling him to pray for courage, hope and faith. Telling him
if he shows this within himself then his people will follow. The Dragon appeared as a symbol of all the things he required
to be the best leader he could be. Tickets are on sale at The Caloundra Events Centre $30 pp. Come and support this hard
working group.
COLLEGE NOTICES
RIVERSIDE’S ‐ P & F ASSOCIATION
“Empowering OUR College Community Through Authentic Partnerships”
Update from Riverside Parents and Friends Committee:
Thank You
A big thank you to Cassandra Payne for her role as President of the P &
F this year. Cassandra resigned from her position as President at the
end of June due to health concerns. Tanya Boyce has been filling in for
Cassandra but has now stepped back into her Vice President position.
Maria Sten was elected President.
Important Notice
During recent months the attendance at P & F meetings has been
dwindling, therefore a decision will need to be made at the next
meeting (29 August) as to whether we continue with the P & F for the
remainder of the year or start fresh in 2013. If you are passionate and
want the P & F to continue for the res t of the year (there are only 3
more meetings), then you need to attend the next meeting. We would
love to see some new faces. Please feel free to come along and give
your ideas. The P & F aims to foster and promote a co‐operative
caring relationship and sense of community between all members of
the College community. We help to support parents and staff in the
enrichment of the children’s education whilst being a positive and
supporting influence within our College.
Tuckshop Helpers
This term the tuckshop will be opening both Wednesday and Friday.
A new order and ordering process will be sent home with your child. It
WASTE MANAGEMENT AT RIVERSIDE
Riverside students are asked to put their rubbish in
different bins in order for the College to better
manage our waste. 3 bins are available in eating
areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at home),
red top bins for garbage that can't be reused or
recycled, and small green top bins for food waste that
can be composted. Our aim is to
decrease our 'landfill' rubbish by 1/3, simply by
recycling and composting.
Please encourage your child/ren to put their
rubbish in the correct bins.
