Battle Abbey School 1912 - 2012
100 Years of Education, 1000 Years of History
Dear Parents
We have had a very exciting end to this academic year.
Battle Abbey School Bulletin
All the latest from the School
6th July 2012
Children from Years 4 to 6 were invited to attend the Royal Visit of
the Earl and Countess of Wessex yesterday. The Royal Highnesses
took part in a Royal “walk about” close to the De La Warr Pavilion
in Bexhill, where our children cheered and waved. Mathilda Richardson
was chosen to be a tassel bearer during the formal opening
of the Diamond Jubilee Walk by The Royal Highnesses; a wonderful
occasion that I am sure Tilly will remember for a very long time!
We are pleased to announce that the final amount raised for the
Kenyan Expedition from our “Guess the name of the Baby Competition”
raised £141.26. Well done to everyone who entered and a
huge thank you to Mrs Martin for organising it.
Yesterday every child in the Prep School enjoyed our special Party
as part of our School Centenary celebrations. The children enjoyed
a fantastic magic show, a very funny Punch and Judy performance
and an amazing disco that had every child and many staff too, dancing
and singing away. We decided that we had truly celebrated our
Centenary in style!
The Year 4 to 6 Boys’ Tennis Tournament took place this week in
glorious sunshine. The standard of tennis was strong with some
fine play and thrilling rallies; especially in the later rounds of the
competition. The final placings were as follows:-
1st place - Sebastian Bradley;
2nd place - Louis Choron;
3rd place - James Bradley; and
4th place - Jaime Samms.
The successes of the last year are too many to list! I wish to record
special thanks to staff who are leaving the Prep School whose
energy and dedication allow the children to blossom in their care –
Beccy Chidley, Becky Mills, Liz Martin and Daisy Perry.
Best wishes to all our year 6’s who are leaving the Prep School and
we look forward to hearing of their achievements and successes as
they move through to their Senior Schools.
Well done to all the children for all their hard work and effort and
for helping to make the Prep School the lively and happy place that
it is. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year at the Prep School
and look forward to seeing you all when we return on Monday 3rd
September.
With best wishes for a lovely summer break.
On the 1st July FSK held
their Summer
championships.
Three students from the
Prep School competed in
the kickboxing section.
Jaime Samms did really
well in an exhibition fight
showing off his skills (and
his well earned Green belt
from the day before). In fact
Jaime demonstrated such
a good level of skill that he
was stopped from competing
in his second exhibition
fight as his standard was so
high! Well done Jaime!
James and Sebastian Bradley
also competed in the boys
orange/yellow belt section.
Both James and Sebastian
won their preliminary fights
and the twins met each
other in the final. They both
fought extremely well with
Sebastian just about coming
out on top.
Well done to both boys. An
excellent day and opportunity
to practice all the skills
that the FSK kickboxers
have learnt over the past
year.
Centenary Art Show!
6th July 2012
Throughout this week, the Centenary Art and Art Textiles Show is being held in the library. The show comprises work from all the way through
the school, from robots made by year 4’s and clay models and paintings by the Nursery to GCSE, AS and A2 award winning works- many textiles
students received “commended” certificates from the National Young Fashion Designer competition run by Pembury College, Kent, with Minna
Hornsby coming first in her category. The Art department of the Senior School and many Prep and Nursery School Staff have been working tirelessly,
with help from students in A level classes, to put up the exhibition.
Paintings and sculptures were provided by students, as well as garments, headdresses and work boards. Student ushers have been helping out every
evening this week to direct viewers, and the Catering staff left tea and biscuits too! Comments given by the spectators included “fabulous work”,
“brilliant results” and “an amazing show with talented young people”.
Brilliant work provided and a beautiful show, well done to everyone involved! Emily Montford

Miss Montford's Missives
In a new column each week Miss
Emily Montford brings us a pupil's
eye view on the School.
On Saturday evening, over 250 people came into the BAS grounds to see
a beautiful marquee set up for the Summer Ball, hosted by FOBAS. That
morning, FOBAS staff including Uta Acuna and Lisa Young had been in setting
everything up, with help from students such as Matthew Masters and
Emma Young.
At seven, everyone arrived in long evening gowns and black tie, beautifully
dressed for the occasion. While enjoying arrival drinks everyone had their
arrival photos before being ushered into the car park to watch the fly over
performed by a Tigermoth and a Spitfire, doing fantastic tricks in the air.
At eight, we all sat down to enjoy a lovely dinner cooked by Jim, Aaron and
the catering staff, enjoyed with silver service.
The Enchanted theme was carried through from the marquee with a ceiling
of starry lights, disco ball and chequered dance floor, to the dining hall,
where “magic” trees grew lollipops, fairy wings and crystals, while the walls
were lit with candlelight’s and popping candy and pink lemonade sprouted
from the tables, encouraging people to “eat me”!
After dinner music was provided in the starlit marquee by Evening Star,
whose brilliant covers of well known hits gave everyone a chance to get
their dancing shoes on- even if they were extraordinarily high!
Two bars, a “pub” bar and a cocktail bar were run by staff, Mr and Mrs
Clark, Mr Eckhoff, Ms Mal, Mrs Young, Mrs Bonell and others.
The evening went on until the early hours, ending with a massive cleanup
operation. Thank you so much to everyone who put in so much effort to
make it as successful as it was, especially FOBAS who organised everything,
with students and guardians on the ball committee, staff who ensured
everything ran smoothly on the night, the people behind the scenes and
everyone who turned up looking so fabulous, and had so much fun!
Evensong
Textile of the week
Ciaran Acuna Year 8
I am not a deeply religious man nor am I given to writing
in the newsletter (there are far more able writers
to give room to than me in these few pages) but it
was impossible not to be moved by Sunday’s service
conducted in the Abbey ruins.
To what extent the talent that our pupils exhibit is natural,
whether Battle Abbey simply attracts creative and
talented pupils, or to what extent these qualities are
instilled by our exceptionally talented performing arts
team, I couldn’t say. Many of the pupils singing in the
Chamber Choir would have been familiar to anyone
attending the recent Summer Concert and the variety
of musical disciplines the pupils who come through the
School achieve excellence in, is testament to the effort
of John Langridge and his team.
As Mr Clark pointed out as part of the Ceremony we are about say goodbye to another year of pupils and the fabulous quality that these talented
youngsters bring to events like this will be sorely missed. The Novices room in the ruined Abbey made for a fabulously evocative setting and I was
certain that the fantastic acoustics of the vaulted ceiling might create the perfect resonance to convince the Monks who lived and worshipped in
the Abbey to make a guest appearance. As one observer commented Bruckner had never sounded better, and more than one of the congregation
was moved to tears. As the wind picked up and the sun set Max Maher gave a fantastically evocative reading drawing on some of the skills he
has picked up starring in local renditions of Macbeth, to deliver a piece originally written about the monolithic Stones at Stanton Drew. The living
breathing aspect of the stones resonated well within a ruined Abbey steeped in religious History.
Many of the boarding house had already left and with some 60 attending the service it felt very private and somehow fitting. I have no doubt that
should this location become a regular aspect of Evensong, it could well become one of the highlights of the School calendar. James Dennett - editor

How quickly this year has flown! It only seems like yesterday that our Oaks joined us as tiny two and three years olds and are now ready for their
next steps in their educational journey at their respective Reception classes. We wish them all well and hope that they have a great time at ‘big
school’.
To the children’s great excitement the day of our end of term party finally arrived and they have all enjoyed having their faces painted, bouncing on
the enormous bouncy castle and hiding in the ball pen.
It was great to see the all the
Nursery children together for a
final time and we hope that the
friendships that have developed
over their time with us continue
and that the contact list
of parents will help you keep in
touch with each other.
The alternative Battle of Hastings Teddy Bear Picnic
6th July 2012
Amid the walls of the Secret Garden on Wednesday, 39 year tens gathered to enjoy an immense feast and plenty of fun and laughter. There
were the ‘onesies’, the ‘binbags’ and the ‘rabid rabbits’. The battle commenced! First, there was the raising of the banner, where Mr Payton
expressed his joy for the ‘Babygrow’ Banner of the Onesies. Then the “battleers” had to compete to make the highest teddy bear mountain.
This was followed by “lob the teddy”, where little compassion was shown by some owners, sacrificing lifelong friends for success- although
some accepted defeat, and decided not to throw their teddybears.
So, arriving at the crux of the competition: the teddybear battle. The Battleers had to wipe out their own teddy brigade with softballs, which
the boys relished, but the girls did not!
At this point a rest was required, and pink lemonade and strawberries and cream revived the crowd.
And so we came into the finale of the picnic, and at this point the Battlecry, with the teams screaming at the top of their voices to terrify the
opposition, and Mr Eckhoff was at hand with a decibel meter to confirm the winning team by one decibel: The Bin Liners.
The cake competition was judged, and of course, the edible teddybear made by Harriet Nurse won- leaving one last thing to do: the charge.
The Battleers amassed at the bottom of the hill with their teddybears, ready to charge Mr Eckhoff and Ms Montford at the top, to which Mr
Malewicz unleashed the battle cry, and the Battleers “won the day”.
