Battle Abbey School 1912 - 2012
100 Years of Education, 1000 Years of History
Dear Parents
Battle Abbey School Bulletin
All the latest from the School
4th November 2011
There are five major achievements to report on from half-term. Two
individuals have brought distinction on themselves as a result of
long months of training and dedication. Zofia Malewicz has become
European silver medallist for kick-boxing, not in the veterans’ class
but in the full women’s competition. Oliver Slacke has become the
national body building champion also against very strong opposition.
These inspirational achievements send excellent messages to our
students that hard work and determination can pay high dividends.
On the academic front we were delighted to welcome sixth formers
from all over the South to our annual 1066 History Conference and
I am extremely grateful to Mike Carver for the academic distinction,
that this very high powered conference brings to the school.
Kevin Anderson led a large group of Year 8 pupils to Dorset for a
week of bonding and adventure and Aaron Eckhoff with Charlotte
Bryant took this year’s seven Duke of Edinburgh aspiring Gold
medalists on an extremely tough hike and camping expedition in
the Peak District. The gentle, sunny weather of the summer, which
I experienced when I was in this beautiful countryside in June had
become aggressive, horizontal hail and high winds and, like a
headache, when it is over, the team returned triumphal and relieved.
This week we have been delighted to welcome our entry and
scholarship candidates for 2012. Early signs are that they are an
extremely able group. Seven different Prep Schools were represented
for entry to Year 9.
We also were delighted to have 8 talented youngsters competing for
the Joanna Lumley scholarship for entry to the Sixth Form
“A Servant to Two Masters” running currently in the West End and
at Battle Abbey School enjoyed its first performance on Thursday
and was a spectacular success. There will be three other productions
this term for different age groups in the school. In addition, the
annual Scholars’ Concert, which showcases the very best of BAS
music takes place next Tuesday. All are welcome. It will be an
excellent evening. At the end of term there is also Carols Round
the Fire. Thus the Performing Arts department is once again in full
swing and I have to record my pride in all that they achieve and take
on.
A recent parental visitor to the school said that they had approached
R.A.D.A. from overseas to ask them to recommend 4 good schools
for the Performing Arts to suit their talented daughter. Battle Abbey
School was one of those 4. Thus they came to visit us.
Do come along to one or other of the productions or concerts in the
next few weeks. I am confident that you will enjoy your visit.
Best wishes
Roger Clark
Dear Parents
The half-term break seemed to fly by for everyone and the children
returned to school on Monday eager to share their holiday
adventures. They have settled swiftly back into the routine of
school this week and are looking particularly smart in their winter
uniforms.
It was really enjoyable to meet so many parents at our parent
teacher consultations held earlier this week. These meetings gave
parents the opportunity to talk with the teachers; to share the
children’s successes and to discuss the progress that has already
been made this academic year.
Reception Class and Year 1 led assembly on Wednesday where the
theme was the longstanding British traditions around Halloween
and All Saints Day. The children in Reception delighted the school
with their Halloween hats and Year 1 proudly displayed their very
own endpapers for a Winnie the Witch book.
Charity work is a vital part of making children good citizens and
I am happy to report that the amount raised to support the Roald
Dahl Children’s Charity following the dressing up day on Friday
14th October was the impressive sum of £130.45. We are currently
supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Poppies to
support this year’s appeal are available just inside the main school
entrance for all our families.
The children at the Prep School regularly enjoy enrichment activities
to extend their thinking and skills in different areas of the curriculum.
Next Wednesday percussionists “Shake, Rattle and Roll”
will be demonstrating their range of fascinating instruments and
every child will be taking part in musical workshops. With this and
so many other activities planned over the next few weeks we look
forward to an extremely busy and very exciting half term.
Best regards
Maria Maslin

Kenya Expedition 2012
Anyone interested in the Kenya Expedition 2012 MUST register with Zofia Malewicz, Head of Sixth Form
by Monday 7th November 2011.
The expedition will head to the amazing Masai Mara and will be the ‘2012 Migration Expedition to Kenya’. The Battle Abbey Team will carry
out a two day project at the Olareolok Primary school. It promises to be an amazing experience.
Maria Ward : Friends for a week and friends for life
The German Exchange just keeps on getting stronger. This year we
doubled the size of the group from Maria Ward Gymnasium, who visited
Battle for the week before half-term. Claverham Community College were
most welcome new partners in the project, which is now into its fourth
highly successful year. The Maria Ward girls, as always, were utterly
delightful guests, joining enthusiastically in every facet of school life, from
lessons to lunches to round-the-town quizzes to the Harold’s Night disco.
Out and about, we had a brilliant day in London visiting Shakespeare’s
Globe and Covent Garden, and the girls made excursions to Hastings and
Brighton too. And the Re-Enactment (plus a little tea party) made a super
conclusion to the week.
We are totally committed, at the Abbey, to ripping the languages off the
page of the text book and bringing them to life with activities and trips such
as the Exchange, as well as our other European trips. The children learn so
much - some of it intangible but lasting for years - through visiting Maria
Ward and Munich, staying in families, building and strengthening contacts
through all those modern media like Skype and Facebook! And what they
learn is more important than any coursebook exercise: that we are one
common humanity. Languages are a bridge and not a barrier.
Special thanks to Mrs Johnson, and to Sarah Noble at Claverham; but
above all to our Year 10s and to the Battle Abbey families who were
amazing hosts and went far, far beyond the minimum in their kindness and
hospitality. Next July in Munich now cannot come soon enough !
Oliver - UK Number 1!
As brought to our attention in Alex Cutting’s regular feature before
half term, our very own Oliver Slacke has been competing in
Body Building qualification rounds over the Summer and we are
delighted to announce that Oliver has been crowned number one in
the UK NPA body building championship.
Oliver travelled to the NPA British finals in Bedworth near
Coventry after winning the South West qualification group in July.
Cheered on by his family Oliver overcame some strong
competition to come first at the Bedworth Civic Hall, competing
against the 5 regional heat winners in his class.
Oliver said, ‘This is my first year of competitive body building
after a year and a half of training, which I undertook primarily at
Zeus Gym in Hastings.’
Oliver will be competing again next year and is keen to win first
in the 3 main body building associations. ‘I’m planning to try
and add the BNBF and NABBA to my NPA trophy,’ says Oliver.
‘There are more bodybuilding associations trophies to compete in,
but these three are the primary groups dealing with what’s known
as All Natural bodybuilding, in that they have a mandatory drug
screening process to test for steroids use and other banned
substances, and are the only ones I would be interested in.’
‘It is possible to forge a career in body building and possible to
become a card carrying professional,’ says Oliver, ‘but there’s not
a great deal of money in professional body building. I’m happy to
see where it goes for now as a hobby.’
Oliver’s first place has seen him internationally recognised and he
has even been featured in ‘Beef’ bodybuilding magazine!
Shoebox appeal collects 50 boxes!
Following on from School Guardian, Alice King’s, appeal before
half term she is delighted to report that over 50 boxes have now
been filled and collected for the cause!
Alice said, ‘Since 1991 Link Romania has been working to make
a difference to the lives of poor and needy people in Romania and
other Eastern European countries.’
‘The ‘Family Shoebox Appeal’ has delivered smiles to thousands
of people in Eastern Europe over the years. The gifts are given to
families who often have to make a choice between buying food or
fuel at Christmas time. Many of these families do not have
running water, heating or electricity. Some live in appalling
conditions, often living in just one or two rooms, and life for them
is a real struggle to survive.’
‘I am delighted with the response from
Battle Abbey School pupils. It’s such a
worthy cause and, as is usual from the
School pupils and their families, everyone
has really got behind it.’

Zof takes Silver
Zofia Malewicz won Silver at the ISKA European
Kickboxing Championships in Venice, Italy last
week. Head of Sixth Form and FSK’s Zofia Malewicz
was fighting at the ISKA European Kickboxing
Championships. Zofia fought outside of her age
category and came through to the final, where she
was up against a fellow team-mate who was 18 years
her junior.
The Final of the Ladies +63kg category was a close
fight with many of the squad thinking Zofia had just
won. The final outcome was a split decision with the
judges ruling in favour of Miss Malewicz and Zofia
took the silver!
On the 13th November some of Battle Abbey School
kickboxers will be competing in the FSK inter club
tournament in Heathfield where we hope they will
bring home some medals too.
If you would like to take up kickboxing just come
along to one of the Battle Abbey Clubs at Prep school
and Senior school. No experience necessary and you
can join at any time.
Nursery News
Welcome back from the October half term; the children have really enjoyed sharing
all their news and stories of their adventures from their holidays with the staff and
their friends. Some children have enjoyed family time at home, others have been lucky
enough to go on holiday to Poland, Germany or within England.
The children have all returned full of energy to run and explore on the field and in our
garden and discover how the changing season impacts on the world around us and themselves
as the need to wrap up warmly and wear wellington boots for our outdoor play
has become more important. The children have enjoyed listening to the crunchy leaves
as they stomped and stamped around the piles of fallen autumn leaves and created leaf
showers for themselves and their friends by collecting and then throwing big bundles of
fallen leaves into the air.
Thank you to all the parents that came along to parent’s evening this week, we really
appreciate the chance to catch up with you and share your child’s learning journey with
you, discuss any concerns and celebrate their successes. If you haven’t had chance to
see your child’s key person yet, it’s not too late as we’re happy to make an alternative
appointment.
On Tuesday the Nursery children and Reception class children came together to share a
visit from the local fire brigade who came along with their big red fire engine which the
children enjoyed climbing up high to sit in the back of. The school mini-bus had an extra
wash as the children each took turns, alongside a fire-fighter, to use the hose to experience
how fast and far the water could be fired! Mrs Cocks was then lucky enough to get
the chance to try out a fire-fighters uniform for size and she was very surprised at how
heavy the uniform and hat were!
The children decided that they would like their role play area to be a hairdressers and
have been intrigued to learn how to plait hair and have been busy making telephone appointments,
booking the customers in on the computer and writing in the diary. We shall
be introducing tea and coffee making facilities next week alongside some children’s
magazines and looking out for an old pair of hair clippers so that the barbers can open
for business!
Fire Brigade Visit the Prep School
On Tuesday East Sussex Fire Brigade visited the Prep School to talk
to KS 1 about the role of the Fire Brigade, fire safety and to show
the children some of the equipment they use in their day-to-day fire
fighting.
The children talked about what to do if they discover a fire and what
to do in an emergency. The reception class particularly liked Mrs
Cocks being dressed up in the fire fighters protective clothing and
helmet!
The children were then joined by some of the Nursery children for
a look round the fantastic fire truck parked out of the front of the
School. The children even got to have a go at hosing off the School
minibus (which Caretaker Paul was very pleased about!)
Tales from the Cutting Room
Alex Cutting, roving reporter, rounds up the most notable
dispatches from the Abbey.
This week we are once again looking at one of Battle Abbey’s
extremely talented actors and actresses taking lead roles in external
production companies. Following on from Max Maher’s outstanding
performance in Hamlet earlier in the year, I am pleased to report that
Battle Abbey 6th former Bethany James has been selected for the part of
‘Liesel’ in the world renowned play ‘The Sound of Music’.
As a member of the long established local amateur acting group; ‘The
Hastleons’, Beth breezed through the June auditions for the play with
ease, landing her the major part as the eldest daughter of the Von Trapp
family.
The play itself was performed over the 19th -22nd October at the White
Rock Theatre in Hastings, which shows both the prestige of the
acting opportunity given to Beth, and reflects the confidence we all have
in her at the School as a first rate performer.
Beth’s achievement performing in such a large scale show illustrates
how Battle Abbey’s drama department has truly produced some
outstanding talents, and we will be eagerly anticipating the next big
thing from Beth in the near future.

PE News
4th November 2011
I am using this week’s PE News slot to talk about the slight changes to school clubs due to the lack of light now the clocks have changed and
winter is upon us. Early morning swimming - Will run on both Monday and Friday mornings for the senior school right up to and including
Monday the 5th of December. South Saxons Hockey Bus – Will run on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings up to and including Thursday the
1st of December, with no buses running in the final week of term. Tuesday evening clubs (Girls football / rugby and Boys rugby) - Will now
combine and share the astro turf, and will run every Tuesday apart from the final week of term. Wednesday Evening Clubs (Girls Netball and
Boys Football) – Will now run on alternative weeks on the astro to ensure that both clubs can still run
up until the final week of term.
Wed 9th of Nov - Boys Football Wed 16th Nov – Girls Netball
Wed 23rd Nov - Boys Football Wed 30th Nov – Girls Netball
Thursday Evening Clubs (Whole school Hockey) – Will continue to run as normal right up until the
final week of term.
Fixture Results:
U14 Netball Vs Moira House – The U14s battled in a close encounter that eventually saw them losing
the game 17-13. The girls played well and demonstrated what a bright future they have together, once
they have properly jelled as a unit.
GOTG: Nancy Glaze for her defensive performance.
U15 Netball Vs Moira House – The U15s were outplayed by a formidable Moira House unit, who took them apart
in the first two quarters. The final score was 27-9, although there were plenty of positives to come from both
individual performances and collectively as a squad.
GOTG: Ellie Matthews for her dynamic passing and creativity in centre.
U12 Netball Vs Uplands – The U12’s played the first leg of a double-header against a new addition to our
fixture diary, Uplands Community College. After a slow start to the game the girls eventually found their footing
and performed well although eventually lost 14-9 in a well contested match.
GOTG: Rosa Amor for an outstanding performance from start to finish.
U13 Hockey Vs Uplands – As part of the fixture listed above the U13s travelled across to play Hockey with
both age groups, returning next week to reverse the games. The U13s were more successful than the U12s and
managed to scrape through with a 7-6 win.
GOTG: Annie Webb who demonstrated her commitment with a fantastic individual performance.
U13 Football Vs Frewen College - This friendly fixture was organised to give all year 7/8 boys another opportunity to represent the school
and play some competitive team sport. The fixture was divided into four quarters and enabled everyone to play in two of the four games.
Although winning two of the four games we conceded more goals over the whole fixture and therefore lost on aggregate goals. It was great to
see so many of the second eleven rising to the occasion and really producing some good individual performances e.g. Leon Dobson & Ciaran
Acuna among several who really took advantage of this opportunity.
MOTM: Could not be split between Henri Choron & Willem Kleinsmeide who both produced some excellent attacking football carving
apart the oppositions defence.
U19 Ladies Netball League game 2 – After a fantastic season opener the U19 girl’s played a team who demolished them in last
years league, and the girls knew they were in for a tough evening. Fearing the worst, the girls brought their ‘A Game’ to ensure
they could gain retribution from the previous year’s performance. After a close first half the girls took the lead in the second half
and ensured they saw out the time in a mature performance to win their second successive game 17-13 and go 2-0 for the season.
GOTG: Annabel Laity, who for the second successive game scored all of the teams points, and has built a tough reputation based on her
success ratio in front of goal, spreading fear throughout the Hastings and District Ladies Netball league.
U19 Netball Vs Bexhill College – With a large group of girls missing due to an A-level drama performance the girls were always going to be
up against it as they travelled to Bexhill college. Knowing several of the Bexhill girls turned out regularly for England Basketballers did not
aid our confidence either and the side ended up losing 32-17 in a brave effort against a quality Bexhill side.
GOTG: Polly Sapsford who had a near impossible task of filling the absent boots of Annabel Laity. A fantastic school debut for her and a few
points bagged for the school side.
U16/19 football Vs Buckswood – As above with a depleted side due to Drama performances the U19s were always going to be up against it
playing a large Buckswood side. After a good first half the boys gambled for the win, but were unlucky in their attempts and ended up losing
the fixture 4-0.
MOTM: William Malkin for his tireless work rate.
