Battle Abbey School 1912 - 2012 100 Years of Education, 1000 Years of History Fire Brigade Visit the Prep School On Tuesday East Sussex Fire Brigade visited the Prep School to talk to KS 1 about the role of the Fire Brigade, fire safety and to show the children some of the equipment they use in their day-to-day fire fighting. The children talked about what to do if they discover a fire and what to do in an emergency. The reception class particularly liked Mrs Cocks being dressed up in the fire fighters protective clothing and helmet! The children were then joined by some of the Nursery children for a look round the fantastic fire truck parked out of the front of the School. The children even got to have a go at hosing off the School minibus (which Caretaker Paul was very pleased about!) Prizes for the winning team! Battle Abbey School Quiz night Friday 18th November 2011 7pm for 7.30 start! We welcome Alan Covall back to the School as Quiz Master. Ploughman’s supper plus free glass of wine (or non alcoholic alternative) £10 per adult £5 per senior school student Teams of 4, 6 or 8 If you are new to the school why not come along and we will place you in a team! The bar will be open from 7pm. The raffle will be drawn at the interval. Any raffle prizes you might like to donate would be greatly appreciated and can be left at the School Office. If you would like to take part, please complete the form emailed to you on Thursday 3rd November and return the slip to the school office ideally before Tuesday 8th November 2011 to avoid disappointment. 4th November 2011 Tales from the Cutting Room Alex Cutting, roving reporter, rounds up the most notable dispatches from the Abbey. This week we are once again looking at one of Battle Abbey’s extremely talented actors and actresses taking lead roles in external production companies. Following on from Max Maher’s outstanding performance in Hamlet earlier in the year, I am pleased to report that Battle Abbey 6th former Bethany James has been selected for the part of ‘Liesel’ in the world renowned play ‘The Sound of Music’. As a member of the long established local amateur acting group; ‘The Hastleons’, Beth breezed through the June auditions for the play with ease, landing her the major part as the eldest daughter of the Von Trapp family. The play itself was performed over the 19th -22nd October at the White Rock Theatre in Hastings, which shows both the prestige of the acting opportunity given to Beth, and reflects the confidence we all have in her at the School as a first rate performer. Beth’s achievement performing in such a large scale show illustrates how Battle Abbey’s drama department has truly produced some outstanding talents, and we will be eagerly anticipating the next big thing from Beth in the near future.
Battle Abbey School 1912 - 2012 100 Years of Education, 1000 Years of History PE News 4th November 2011 I am using this week’s PE News slot to talk about the slight changes to school clubs due to the lack of light now the clocks have changed and winter is upon us. Early morning swimming - Will run on both Monday and Friday mornings for the senior school right up to and including Monday the 5th of December. South Saxons Hockey Bus – Will run on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings up to and including Thursday the 1st of December, with no buses running in the final week of term. Tuesday evening clubs (Girls football / rugby and Boys rugby) - Will now combine and share the astro turf, and will run every Tuesday apart from the final week of term. Wednesday Evening Clubs (Girls Netball and Boys Football) – Will now run on alternative weeks on the astro to ensure that both clubs can still run up until the final week of term. Wed 9th of Nov - Boys Football Wed 16th Nov – Girls Netball Wed 23rd Nov - Boys Football Wed 30th Nov – Girls Netball Thursday Evening Clubs (Whole school Hockey) – Will continue to run as normal right up until the final week of term. Fixture Results: U14 Netball Vs Moira House – The U14s battled in a close encounter that eventually saw them losing the game 17-13. The girls played well and demonstrated what a bright future they have together, once they have properly jelled as a unit. GOTG: Nancy Glaze for her defensive performance. U15 Netball Vs Moira House – The U15s were outplayed by a formidable Moira House unit, who took them apart in the first two quarters. The final score was 27-9, although there were plenty of positives to come from both individual performances and collectively as a squad. GOTG: Ellie Matthews for her dynamic passing and creativity in centre. U12 Netball Vs Uplands – The U12’s played the first leg of a double-header against a new addition to our fixture diary, Uplands Community College. After a slow start to the game the girls eventually found their footing and performed well although eventually lost 14-9 in a well contested match. GOTG: Rosa Amor for an outstanding performance from start to finish. U13 Hockey Vs Uplands – As part of the fixture listed above the U13s travelled across to play Hockey with both age groups, returning next week to reverse the games. The U13s were more successful than the U12s and managed to scrape through with a 7-6 win. GOTG: Annie Webb who demonstrated her commitment with a fantastic individual performance. U13 Football Vs Frewen College - This friendly fixture was organised to give all year 7/8 boys another opportunity to represent the school and play some competitive team sport. The fixture was divided into four quarters and enabled everyone to play in two of the four games. Although winning two of the four games we conceded more goals over the whole fixture and therefore lost on aggregate goals. It was great to see so many of the second eleven rising to the occasion and really producing some good individual performances e.g. Leon Dobson & Ciaran Acuna among several who really took advantage of this opportunity. MOTM: Could not be split between Henri Choron & Willem Kleinsmeide who both produced some excellent attacking football carving apart the oppositions defence. U19 Ladies Netball League game 2 – After a fantastic season opener the U19 girl’s played a team who demolished them in last years league, and the girls knew they were in for a tough evening. Fearing the worst, the girls brought their ‘A Game’ to ensure they could gain retribution from the previous year’s performance. After a close first half the girls took the lead in the second half and ensured they saw out the time in a mature performance to win their second successive game 17-13 and go 2-0 for the season. GOTG: Annabel Laity, who for the second successive game scored all of the teams points, and has built a tough reputation based on her success ratio in front of goal, spreading fear throughout the Hastings and District Ladies Netball league. U19 Netball Vs Bexhill College – With a large group of girls missing due to an A-level drama performance the girls were always going to be up against it as they travelled to Bexhill college. Knowing several of the Bexhill girls turned out regularly for England Basketballers did not aid our confidence either and the side ended up losing 32-17 in a brave effort against a quality Bexhill side. GOTG: Polly Sapsford who had a near impossible task of filling the absent boots of Annabel Laity. A fantastic school debut for her and a few points bagged for the school side. U16/19 football Vs Buckswood – As above with a depleted side due to Drama performances the U19s were always going to be up against it playing a large Buckswood side. After a good first half the boys gambled for the win, but were unlucky in their attempts and ended up losing the fixture 4-0. MOTM: William Malkin for his tireless work rate.
