NATIONAL BROWN-BAG IT DAY 

Happy National Brown-Bag-It Day! That’s right, today’s 

the day to celebrate the good old art of bringing your 

lunch from home. While checking out new places to 

eat by your office can be fun and sometimes grabbing a 

sandwich from the local deli feels like the easiest thing 

to do, packing your own lunch is a much healthier and 

less expensive choice. Even those healthy-seeming 

salads from the local cafe can hide some not-sonutritious 

ingredients. 

Packing your own lunch for work may be more time 

consuming (although how long do you spend waiting 

in line at the sandwich shop?), but with some simple 

planning and a weekend trip to the grocery store, it 

can become an easy part of your routine. To help you 

on your way to a healthier lunchtime habit, we’ve 

created five easy lunch options for every day of the 

work week. With each bite, you’ll feed your body, calm 

your mind and rejuvenate for your afternoon! 

Brown Bag #1: Kale salad with radish greens and zesty 

lemon dressing 

After you’ve made it through your hectic Monday 

morning, treat yourself to this filling salad. Kale is 

an antioxidant-packed superfood that will help you 

detox from any weekend revelry, leaving your immune 

system recharged for the week ahead, while vitamin 

C-dense radish leaves rev up your immune system. This 

zesty lemon shallot dressing adds some inflammatory 

action for a revitalizing and nutritious lunch.

Brown Bag #2: Avocado on toast with seaweed chips 

Spread some hummus on whole wheat or glutenfree 

toast, then add a few slices of nutrient-packed 

avocado. Sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and a dash of 

cayenne for a spicy metabolism boost. This goes great 

with fiber- and protein-rich seaweed chips. 

Brown Bag #3: Fruit salad with a side of mixed nuts 

For a middle-of-the-week energy boost, try this lunch 

of fruits and nuts. Choose immunity-boosting citrus, 

fiber-filled apples, potassium-packed bananas or 

antioxidant-dense berries. The natural sugars of the 

fruits will give you a steady energy boost. Go nuts 

with your nuts! Walnuts are filled with omega-3’s and 

antioxidants; almonds pack vitamin E, folic acid and 

tons of other vitamins and minerals; pistachios are 

high in fiber; cashews have bone-building magnesium; 

pecans can help ward off heart disease; Brazil nuts 

are bursting with selenium - and they’ll all give you 

enough protein to power through the afternoon. 

Brown Bag #4: Tomato-hummus sandwich paired with 

apple slices and almond butter 

This veggie sandwich swaps out the meat for a thick 

slice of heart-healthy tomato. Add a few slices of 

red or white onion and place between two slices of 

whole wheat or gluten-free bread, evenly spread 

with hummus. Add hunger-satisfying apple slices and 

protein-rich almond butter for a sweet side.

SMART LANDSCAPING TIPS 

Larry the Talking Sprinkler of the NFBWA says ‘You only need to WATER 

your lawn TWICE a WEEK!!’ and Cinco MUD 8 recommends you set your 

sprinkler for 8 minutes twice a week between the hours of midnight and 

5am. If you see puddling, water twice for 4 minutes. i.e. Monday 1 AM-4 

minutes, 3 AM-4 minutes, repeat in 4 days. Enjoy your Green Lawn. 

THE KATY COMMUNITY GIVING CIRCLE - 

COLLECTIVE GIVING FOR GREATER IMPACT 

The Katy Community Giving Circle (formerly known as The Cinco Ranch 

Giving Circle) is open to any resident in the Katy area who wants to 

make a difference by giving collectively. Our mission is to create a circle 

of giving in our community by collectively contributing to organizations 

that will benefit or improve the lives of the people in our neighborhoods. 

By combining members tax deductible donations of just $10 per month, 

we are determined to make a greater giving impact! In our first year we 

have been able to gift grants to 2 local organizations and we are building

CINCO RANCH LADIES CLUB 

The Cinco Ranch Ladies Club (CRLC) is a 501(c)3 providing residents in 

Katy and surrounding cities with activities, both social and charitable. 

We designate charities each year as recipients for our fundraising events. 

We typically meet each month as an entire club at The Golf Club at Cinco 

Ranch at 7 PM to partake in themed events such as a Chili Cook Off, 

Halloween Party, Craft Fairs, Silent Auction, Line Dancing, Self--Defense 

Class, Favorite Things Exchange and Luau. 

We also offer about 22 sub-clubs that each meet once a month on a small 

scale in residents homes, businesses, restaurants and walking trails. A few 

special interest clubs are Book, Business Network, Bunco, Coffee, Craft, 

Dining, Lunch, Ladies Night Out, Movie, Garden, Game Night, Meditation, 

Wine, Walking and more. $35 annual dues for all the social and charitable fun.

KATY ISD SUMMER BAND CAMP 

The fifteenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th , 8 th and 

9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Tompkins High School from 

July 10 th to July 14 th . The camp will include daily section rehearsals, full 

band rehearsals and fun music based electives. Lunch is also part of the 

camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a t-shirt if registered 

by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need to include a late 

registration fee of $25 totaling $155. All registrations must be postmarked 

by Friday, June 23 rd . The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert 

on Friday morning at 9 AM. After the concert, those students wishing to 

extend the fun a little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Typhoon 

Texas for an additional $35 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and 

drinks are included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 

5 th ). The KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each year 

and we anticipate a large enrollment again this year. 

Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as 

soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare 

major scales and chromatic scales specific to the student’s instrument, 

as well as a band camp audition etude, which can be downloaded from 

the webpage below. Students will be ability grouped with the number of 

bands being determined by total enrollment for the camp. Registration 

Form, Audition materials and Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent Form 

can be downloaded by campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage 

www.katyisd.org/dept/finearts. An email confirmation is sent out upon 

receipt of registration and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator 

will be sent before the camp begins, so make sure your email address is 

clearly printed on the registration form. 

The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those 

who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the 

summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive top 

quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD and 

Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the fifteenth annual Katy ISD 

Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills sharp for 

the year! Camp brochures, with the registration form, will be distributed 

to KISD band students by their schools’ directors. Camp brochures can 

also be downloaded from the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage above. Plan to 

register early in order to guarantee a spot! Again, registrations must be 

postmarked by Friday, June 23 rd . If you have already registered and have

KATY AREA RETIRED TEACHERS(KARE) 

On March 6, 2017, The Katy Area Retired Teachers (KARE) went on their 

annual field trip to the Taste of Texas Restaurant. Taste of Texas Restaurant 

owner, Nina Hendee hosted a luncheon for the Katy Area Retired 

Educators (KARE). The Taste of Texas opened in 1977 and has become a 

Houston landmark steakhouse. Hendee is an expert historian and has an 

amazing passion for Texas history. Her passion for history was ignited by 

her 4 th grade teacher. For more information about the Katy Area Retired

The third annual Cow Patty Classic 5K/10K will be held on 

Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Tompkins High School. Checkin 

begins at 6:30 AM and the race starts at 7:30 AM. This 

event is hosted by the Tompkins FFA Booster Club and 

supports the Tompkins FFA Student Chapter. FFA makes 

a positive difference in the lives of students by developing 

their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and 

career success through agricultural education. The money

AHFC SOCCER 

SUMMER CAMP SERIES 2017 

AHFC is pleased to offer the Summer Camp Series at multiple 

campuses in and around Houston. The club invites all interested 

players to the Canes Fundamental Camp (Ages 5-9) or the Canes 

Skills & Drills Camp (Ages 10-16).

will be offered in New Territory, Cy-Fair and Katy

KATY AREA RUNNING CLUB 

The Katy Area Running Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation 

which exists to serve people living in and around Katy, Texas 

who have an interest in running. We are a community of 

people of all ages, backgrounds, heritages and abilities who 

share a common interest - running! Our focus is on group 

runs, having fun, socializing and sharing our knowledge and 

experience with our members and the public. We welcome 

all who are interested in joining us. We have a full calendar of 

runs, events and socials. We hold group runs every Saturday 

morning at the Sergeant Hatch Sports Park off the south I-10 

feeder road just east of Barker Cypress Rd. On Tuesdays (5 AM 

and 6:30 PM) we meet at the Cinco Ranch Junior High Track for 

speedwork and on Thursday (6:30 PM) we meet at Crosspoint 

Community Church for tempo runs of various distances

TENNIS ORGANIZATION FOR THE KATY AREA 

Katy Area Tennis (KAT) is the newest, non-profit tennis organization meeting the 

needs of all tennis players in the Katy area. Our goal is to provide a wide range of 

programming for tennis players as well as to promote the game in the Katy area. 

Registration is currently open for a variety of leagues, ladders and tournaments that 

include singles, doubles and mixed doubles for all ages and skill levels. For more

TRACK HOUSTON YOUTH TRACK CLUB 

Track Houston is the nation’s largest and most successful youth track and field 

organization. Our goal is to assist interested boys and girls ages 6 to18 years old

KATY CANOE & KAYAK CLUB (KC/KC) 

Join a non-profit club - free of charge. We meet every 3 rd Wednesday of each month 

at 24638 Kingsland Blvd., Katy TX 77494. We post different water trips and outdoor 

adventures on the Meet Up Group Website. 

Don’t know if you prefer to canoe or kayak? Don’t buy something just to buy it… try 

out different boats. These trips will help you decide what you like or if you even like 

to paddle. We can help! We have years of water sports adventures under our belts. 

We don’t sell boats or boat gear, but we do have kayaks and canoes and/or we know

An event that brings the community and combat veterans and their 

families together. Registration is now open for the 13 th Annual Impact 

a Hero 5K, one of Impact a Hero’s major fundraising events of the 

year. This year, the race will be held May 20, 2017 at the Constellation 

Field and will feature the traditional 5K Run/Walk/Wheel and Kids 1K 

beginning at 7 AM. 

The 5K registration is $25 for untimed and $35 for timed. The 5K wheel 

is $25. The Kids 1K is $15. Prices increase on May 13 th and again on 

race day. Cash prizes will be awarded for the Men’s Open, Men’s Master,

Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the 

summer to encourage reading among people of all ages. Library programs 

and activities begin during the week of June 5 th and continue through July 

29 th . There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs (SRC) and they 

are open to everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants 

may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online 

by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the 

“SRC Sign-Up” image, which will become available on May 29 th . When the 

online registration form has been completed, readers will then have their 

own online page on which to record their books or reading time. Reading 

rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 5 th . Prizes must be 

collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on 

the registration form. The last day to pick up awards is August 31 st . The 

Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, 

the Friends organizations that support the county library system and the 

Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working 

together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program 

materials for public libraries. 

SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN 

Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come 

to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs 

and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Children are 

encouraged to read or listen to as many books as they can and they will 

earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or have read 

to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive a bookmark. 

The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil for 15 books 

and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 20 books read, 

the participant’s name will also be written on a picture of a builder’s block 

to be displayed in that branch library. The names of participants will be 

entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores that will be awarded 

to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in 

August at each library location. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE 

Area youth in grades 6 th -8 th can participate in the SRC by logging online the 

time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books as 

they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time they 

spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading, each reader 

will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours (1200 minutes) 

of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The names of participants who 

complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for 

a $25-gift card that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch 

library in a drawing that will take place in August. 

SUMMER READING CLUB FOR TEENS & ADULTS 

Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate 

in the YA & Adult SRC by reading books and participating in optional 

weekly “challenges” that can be completed individually at home online. 

Completing the weekly challenges will gain readers additional entries for 

the monthly drawings for an FBCL stainless steel insulated bottle. The 

monthly drawings will take place at the ends of June and July at each 

branch library for readers who log in and record their reading each week. 

All YA and adult readers who complete the goal of reading five books will 

earn a dual highlighter/pen. In addition, the names of participants who 

complete at least five books will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift 

card that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library in a 


drawing that will take place at the end of July. An ultimate grand prize will 

be awarded to one lucky reader in the library system. Participants in the 

YA/Adult Summer Reading Club who complete the program by reading 

five books will be entered into a drawing for a 16 GB Fire HD 8 tablet with 

a red case, which will be awarded to one winner in the library system on 

July 31 st . The last day to pick up awards is August 5 th .

STANDUP FOR KIDS 

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all 

volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and 

homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search 

the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and 

street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids 

die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent 

statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given 

time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. 

StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides 

food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless

YOUR HELP DRIVING OLDER ADULTS 

Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting 

seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering, 

visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides. 

Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age 

65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time 

commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you 

want to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker 

Cypress, north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at 

the Grand Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity 

to help seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers 

tell us the day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if 

they wait for the senior or return later to pick them up. Drivers must be 

between 21 years of age and 78 years of age with a good driving record, 

pass a background check and show proof of insurance coverage (state

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing fast. Here 

are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals including 

plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, 

pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants, okra, 

sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil, peppers, 

lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you don’t want 

to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and there in your 

flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight sided 

container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long to run your 

irrigation system to apply 1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better yet, 

maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to deter weeds 

from getting a start. 

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to promote 

new blooms. 

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release 

organic fertilizer. 

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent light 

sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! 

Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding spots.

Give Your Air Conditioner a Checkup 

• Replace your air filter to make sure the whole system runs

1 ST ANNUAL KATY COLOR RUN ATTRACTS 

MORE THAN 700 ATTENDEES 

On March 25 th , over 700 local residents attended the 1 st annual Katy 

Color Run. The event got off to a colorful start with a 1K Kids’ Dash and 

was followed by a chalk filled 5K. The run was held at the APEX medical 

building at 25277 Kingsland Boulevard in Katy. 

Jackson Potter, 12 and Alexia Diermeier, 15 were the top male and female 

finishers in the 5K. Potter finished with a time of 19:47 and Diermeier 

clocked in at 21:58. Paloma Medrano, 8 and Kian Ghilzadeh, 11 were the 

winners of the Kids’ Dash 1K. 

Entertainment at the post race party included performances by Marshall 

Camp and Mark Wells and featured fitness demonstrations by the 

Katy Main Street YMCA. Talented local chalk artists created colorful 

masterpieces. Several local vendors attended the event and offered 

complementary beverages and snacks to runners and spectators. A kids 

zone had games, face painting, balloon artists, inflatables, trampolines 

and healthy snacks. 

All proceeds from the Color Run benefited three local nonprofit 

organizations: Christ Clinic, Clothed by Faith and Hope Impacts. Christ 

Clinic is a charity health clinic and provides medical care for uninsured 

and underinsured patients. Clothed by Faith gives gently used and new 

clothing to thousands of Katy area residents in need. Hope Impacts 

imparts hope to homeless, helpless and under resourced people in the 

Katy area by connecting them to services and resources. 

The presenting sponsor of the Color Run was Kingsland Baptist. Other 

lead sponsors were Healthy Gourmet and the City of Katy. More than 100 

volunteers helped make the event a success. 

FIRST COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION AND THE 

HOUSTON TEXANS HOST THEIR ANNUAL 

“STARS IN THE CLASSROOM” BANQUET 

First Community Credit Union, The Official Credit Union of the Houston 

Texans and the Personal Choice of Brian Cushing, recognizes and rewards 

teachers as Stars in the Classroom. 

The sixth annual “Stars in the Classroom” Banquet recognizes ten 

educators for making a difference in their schools. “Stars in the Classroom” 

is a partnership between First Community Credit Union and the Houston 

Texans. As the face of the program, Houston Texans Linebacker, Brian 

Cushing welcomed each honoree with a handshake, photo-op and plaque. 

Known for being a leader on and off the field, Cushing explained how 

much teaching has impacted his adolescent and day-to-day life. From 

coaching his son in little league to giving advice to teammates, being able 

to teach others has come full circle. 

The program begins every year in mid-August and spans till the end of 

October. During the contest period, ten teachers are nominated by past or 

current students and/or parents that see them go above and beyond in the 

classroom. Each deserving teacher is awarded by a surprise appearance from 

Brian Cushing or one fellow Houston Texan who hand-delivers two football 

tickets, sideline passes, a customized football with Star Teacher’s name 

inscribed and a $500 donation to their school district. The student whose 

nominated teacher is selected, receives an autographed Houston Texans 

football. This year, “Stars in the Classroom” received around 390 nominations. 

Nominations are currently closed, but will open again in August 2017. 

During this year’s banquet, FCCU was able to surprise the star Texans 

linebacker with a donation check to the Brian Cushing Foundation. The 

mission of the foundation is to serve and honor the men and women who 

protect our country by providing resources and experiences to Houstonarea 

veterans and their families.

Baked 

Onion Dip 

Ingredients: 

1 - 8 oz block of cream cheese 

1 bag frozen chopped onions 

1 cup mayonnaise 

1 cup shredded parmesan cheese 

Directions: 

Soften cream cheese in the microwave 

and mix the remaining ingredients. 

Bake at 350 degrees for about 25-30 

minutes or until bubbly and brown 

around the edges. 

Buttermilk 

Salad 

Ingredients: 

15.5 oz can Crushed Pineapple 

2 - 3 oz packages Peach Jell-O 

1 cup chopped Pecans 

2 cups Buttermilk 

8 oz carton Cool Whip 

Directions: 

In a medium saucepan, heat the 

undrained pineapple until it reaches a 

boil. Add the Jell-O and dissolve, stirring 

well. Allow the mixture to cool and then 

add the buttermilk. Continue to cool and 

fold in the Cool Whip. Mix thoroughly 

and congeal in a 9” x 13” pan.

This super yummy pasta salad was served at my parent’s retirement 

party this past weekend, and was a huge hit! My coworker, Janey 

Stults, hosted the party, and cooked every bit of the food served. Let 

me tell you, this lady can cook! I promise you will enjoy this salad as 

much as everyone at the party! Enjoy! 

PS: Although I’ve designated this as the Featured Recipe, the recipes 

across from this are from the party too. Yum! 

Vermicelli Salad 

1 (12oz.) package Vermicelli, cooked and drained 

4 Tbsp olive oil 

3 Tbsp lemon juice 

½ tsp Allspice 

On first day, combine cooked Vermicelli, olive oil, lemon 

juice and allspice. Cover and refrigerate oernight. 

2 cups mayonnaise 

1 bell pepper, chopped 

1 cup chopped celery 

½ cup chopped onion 

1- 4 oz jar pimiento 

1 (6-8oz) can pitted ripe olives chopped 

1- 5 oz can water chestnuts, drained and sliced 

Salt and pepper to taste 

Optional: 2½ cups canned ham, cooked chicken breast, 

shrimp, or cooked hamburger 

Second day, add the rest of the ingredients, mix well , 

and refrigerate.
