CONTRIBUTORS WANTED FOR NEWSLETTER
The Lost Creek Newsletter is getting a bit repetitive. That’s because
only one person has been writing for the newsletter since Renee
Cox moved away. Surely at least a few Lost Creek homeowners can
contribute items for our community newsletter. I’m are not asking for
people to do the whole newsletter, just write up a single article once
in a while. I’ll even take suggestions as to what topic you would like
to see included. Please be aware that material has to be submitted
to the publisher five weeks in advance of the Newsletter issue date. If
you wish to contribute something informative or newsworthy about
our community, please submit it by the 22 nd of the month in Word
format as an attachment to this email address:
lostcreeknewsletter@outlook.com. THANK YOU!!
ATTENTION ALL READERS!!!!
We are happy to announce that the Little Free Library is up and
running. This project was funded by the HOA and implemented by
Thao Powel, Cassie Clayton and family. The LFL is located in front
of the pool near the parking lot. This is a great and fun way for the
entire family to enjoy reading and there are no fees. Please bring
appropriate books for exchange.
RODENTS IN THE DETENTION PONDS
HELPFUL PHONE NUMBERS
Last spring the detention ponds were invaded by both beavers and
nutria rats. Lost Creek contracted with a company to remove them.
The Fort Bend MUD50 later reimbursed us for the expense. Well, the
rodents were back again this year due to the wet weather. This year
MUD50 took the initiative and contracted with a firm to remove them
as soon as they appeared. So far there have been no beavers, just
twelve nutria rats.
PARK ON SIERRA LONG
It appears that we may have lost only four of the live oak trees that
were transplanted into our park a year ago. These will be removed
and replaced with young trees donated by a homeowner. Two of the
trees are Lacebark Elms and the other two are Trident Maples. The
Board of Directors will decide within the next few months on whether
or not to put in the walking trail this summer based on our resources.
STREET LIGHT OUT??
Please don’t call PCMI. Contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222
or go to their website to report an outage. You will need to get the
number that’s on the side of the light pole to let them know which
light is out and where the pole is located.
OLD FENCES - WARPED, BROKEN & ROTTING
As you all know, most of the fences in our community are 10 to 12
years old by now, some are bowed, cracked, leaning and overall deteriorated.
We encourage all residents to consider repairing, rebuilding
and/or replacing at least the portions facing the street. This will make
it safe for residents and pets and enhance our neighborhood, thus
keep our home values up.
If your project involves constructing something anywhere in your yard,
first call 811 to have someone from the utilities come out and determine
POOL HOURS FOR THE 2017 SUMMER SEASON
As of the deadline for submission of material for this issue, the Board
did not have a schedule for the 2017 season. The Board has been looking
into a possible change of operating hours based on requests from
residents at the Annual Meeting. A decision will be made after talking
with our pool management company to see if they can accommodate
us and what costs this may incur. The 2017 schedule will be posted on
the Lost Creek website.
VEHICLES ON DRIVEWAY BLOCKING THE SIDEWALK
During this year’s HOA meeting, there were several complaints about
vehicles parked on driveways blocking the sidewalk. We ask all residents
to be kind and refrain from parking your vehicles on the driveway
blocking the sidewalk. This represent a hazard for people of all ages that
have to go out onto the street to get by.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE
The Activities Committee has events planned for the remainder of 2017.
As always they welcome suggestions from residents of Lost Creek as to
what events they would like to have in the future. Please send an email
PARKING IN THE STREET
Be courteous to your neighbors if you choose to park in the street anywhere in Lost Creek.
Please don’t park directly opposite another parked vehicle so as to leave only a narrow
space for other vehicles to drive. Be aware that, if you park in the street, you could be
risking damage to your vehicle if it is hit by a passing vehicle.
COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
COMMERCIAL VEHICLES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE PARKED OVERNIGHT
ON ANY OF THE STREETS WITHIN LOST CREEK.
ARCHITECTURAL REQUESTS
Lost Creek is a planned community with an HOA and the documents, which govern it. This
means that all homeowners in the community must abide by certain rules and regulations
regarding what a homeowner can and cannot do on his/her property. The objectives are
to keep the appearance of all of the properties attractive and maintain home values here
in Lost Creek. Having no rules and regulations or not enforcing them, allows a community
to degrade. Please be aware that the Architectural Review Committee will not approve
requests made by homeowners whose assessment account is in arrears.
DO NOT LET YOUR PETS RUN FREE IN LOST CREEK
Common household pets must be confined to a fenced-in backyard or in the house. Pets
are not allowed to roam free outside of your house or outside of your fenced-in backyard.
When walking your dog or other pet away from your property, it must be on a leash at
all times within Lost Creek. This is a Fort Bend County ordinance as well as a Lost Creek
regulation.
PLEASE SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Don’t contribute to the spread of disease. Young children sometimes pick up pet poop
and play with it not knowing what it is. When you walk your dog, respect all yards and
sidewalks in our neighborhood as well as Lost Creek’s community property. Remember
to bring either a scooper and/or plastic bags to pick up the poop and place in trash at
home or in the trashcan at the rec center. Thank you.
in Mexican national pride. The victory made the Mexican people
very happy and helped create a feeling of national unity.
• While Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico, it is
mainly observed in the state capital of Puebla. However, in
the United States, it is becoming a popular holiday to celebrate
Mexican culture.
• The largest Cinco de Mayo event in the world is held in Los Angeles, California, where
more than 600,000 people celebrate with music and food. The whole event is called
• There aren’t any specific foods associated with Cinco de Mayo, but traditional Mexican
dishes such as enchiladas, burritos, guacamole and tacos are popular.
Mother’s Day - A day for MOM
Mother’s Day has its roots in
ancient Greek festivals honoring
Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.
The modern American holiday
officially began in 1914, when
President Woodrow Wilson
declared the second Sunday
in May a day to honor all the
mothers. Here are some tips on
celebrating Mother’s Day
on May 14 th !
1. Deliver the classic Mother’s Day treat: breakfast in bed on an old-fashioned
wicker tray table. Cook her favorite morning fare, mix her an
eye-opening mimosa and tuck her favorite flowers into a small crystal
vase. If the tray has slots on the sides, fill them with small presents (or
big presents in small packages).
2. Take your mother on a trip with Mother’s Day sandwiched in the middle.
Make it as simple as a long weekend at the beach or as elaborate
as a trip across the States.
3. Surprise your mother with a visit if she lives far away.
6 Lost Creek | May 2017
4. Deliver her present by way of a treasure hunt. Lead her on as long a
trail as you think she’ll find amusing, with her present waiting at the end.
5. Honor your mother’s memory if she’s no longer living. Send a donation
to her favorite charity or spend the day working for her favorite cause.
Do things she taught you to love.
6. Thank the women who produced your favorite people - send cards,
flowers or notes to the mothers of your friends, even if you’ve never met
them.
7. Throw a Mother’s Day party for your mother, your friends and their
mothers. Consider a festive spring brunch.
8. Best tip: tell mom you love her.
ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY
Reason We Celebrate Memorial Day: A day of remembrance for those
who have died in our nation’s service.
History of the Memorial Day Holiday (U.S.):
• Originally called Decoration Day
• Memorial Day Holiday was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General
John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic
• Memorial Day first observed on May 30, 1868
• Congress changed the observed Memorial Day date in 1968 to the last
Monday in May to ensure a three day weekend
Formal Observance of Memorial Day:
• Wear red poppies on Memorial day to honor those who died serving
the United States during war
• At 3 PM local time on Memorial Day, Americans should pause
for a moment of silence or listen to “Taps”
• Visit cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves
of veterans for Memorial Day
• Visit a memorial
• Attend a Memorial Day parade to honor fallen heroes
Informal Observance of Memorial Day:
• Family and friends get together for a Picnic for Memorial Day
• Memorial Day is unofficial kick-off of summer season
MEMORIAL WEEKEND GETAWAYS
Here are some celebrations across America that offered something
special in honor of the Memorial Day holiday:
Palm Springs, Calif.: For guaranteed summer weather
While most beach seasons are just beginning, Memorial Day marks
the end of bearable temps in the desert, so hotels and operators are
running specials for the holiday. Though other parts of California will
e in the midst of “May Gray” and “June Gloom,” Palm Springs still has
nonstop sunshine-plus dozens of vintage shops, acclaimed restaurants
and an enduring love for all things mid-century (its hotels and private
homes offer some of the best examples of 1950s modern architecture
in the country).
Washington, D.C.: For patriotism, pomp and circumstance
Washington D.C. is the most patriotic place to celebrate the holiday, with
a parade and plenty of pomp and circumstance taking place during special
military ceremonies. Arlington National Cemetery-which celebrated
its 150 th anniversary in May 2014-hosts a wreath-laying ceremony at 11
AM on Memorial Day at the Tomb of the Unknowns accompanied by
performances from the U.S. Navy Band.
Saint Louis: For the ultimate treasure hunt
Don’t miss the largest flea market in the Midwest, Gypsy Caravan, an
annual Memorial Day event organized for the 44 th year by the St. Louis
Symphony Volunteer Association.
The Jersey Shore: For family fun and rides along the iconic Boardwalk
Steel Pier, Atlantic City’s popular oceanside amusement park, debuted
eight new rides in 2013. Outside Atlantic City, check out the annual Wildwoods
International Kite Festival, the largest in North America, Friday
thru Monday, an event that starts Friday at noon with the “Unlocking
of the Ocean” media event.
Austin: For boating season and outdoor fun
Head to Lake Travis to soak up some of Austin’s best weather of the year,
with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the eighties. Memorial Day
kicks off boating season here, so the place to be is the lake.
GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing fast.
Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and productive:
Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals including
plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia, sunflowers,
yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants,
okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil,
peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you
don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and
there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight
sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long
to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better yet,
maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to deter
weeds from getting a start.
8 Lost Creek | May 2017
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to
promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release
organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent light
sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders!
Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding spots.
GREEN CORNER
Tip of the Month - “Changing with the Times”
The following article is from North Fort Bend Water Authority’s official
publication, ‘The Water Log.’
Your lawn doesn’t receive the same amount of rain year-round, so why
water the same amount every day?
Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension has published its recommended settings
for the water budgeting feature on your sprinkler system. You
should adjust your sprinkler every month to ensure a healthy and
sustainable yard.
Month
Setting
January 35%
February 46%
March 64%
April 76%
May 90%
June 100%
July 96%
August 90%
September 85%
October 63%
November 44%
December 35%
If your lawn is healthy or if we’ve been getting a lot of rain, don’t worry
about watering at all. If you do need to water your lawn, water 1 inch
per week, early in the morning or late at night.
For updates on changing your water budgeting feature and other tips
such as winterizing your system, like fb.com/LarryTheTalkingSprinkler.
BABY BOOM
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Spring is the time when
animals are looking for secluded
locations for giving
birth and raising their babies.
Sometimes these sites
aren’t so “human-friendly”
like attics, chimneys or in your garage. The BEST solution when this
happens is to leave them alone until they move out but if you must
move them, please use HUMANE methods to do so. If possible, postpone
your tree trimming until later in the season. Squirrels, birds and
raccoons nest in trees and you could easily displace baby animals by
cutting down limbs and trees.
Here are a few tips to help save the babies this spring:
RE-NEST BABY BIRDS: If you’re like me, I was told growing up that
one should never touch a baby bird because the mom will reject it.
This is a myth. If you find a baby bird and it appears uninjured, place
it back in the nest. If you can’t reach the nest, you can place the bird
in a shallow basket or box and hang it as close to the nest as possible.
In most cases, mom will continue to care for it. If the bird is injured
or the mom isn’t feeding the baby, it’s time to intervene. Place the
baby in a small, covered container and bring it as soon as possible
to TWRC Wildlife Center. Do not attempt to feed it or give it water!
RACCOONS IN THE ATTIC: If you can’t wait until mom moves out
on her own, you can “encourage” her to move by leaving lights on in
the area all night. Place a radio in the area and play it loudly. It may
take a couple of days but she will soon tire of the light and the noise
Lost Creek | May 2017
and move her little ones. Then MAKE SURE you repair the opening
where she got in.
One other helpful information about raccoons. During late spring
and summer, you may see raccoons out during the day. Raccoons
are nocturnal EXCEPT if they are nursing moms. It is not uncommon
for females to be out during daylight hours looking for food. It does
NOT mean she has rabies.
FAWNS: It’s normal for a doe to “park” her fawn and leave it there for
hours while she goes off to eat. The fawns instinctively know that they
must stay there until she returns and unless she has been injured,
she WILL return. Since fawns are odorless, predators are unable to
pick up their scent. When the fawn is about a month old, it will begin
traveling with mom but in the meantime, please LEAVE IT ALONE!
BABY RABBITS: If the babies are not injured and the nest is intact,
leave them alone. Just like a mama doe, rabbits only visit their young
two to three times a day. Here’s a good test if you think the babies
really have been orphaned. Use sticks or trigs and make an “X” over
the nest. If, after 12 hours, the “X” is still in place, the bunnies are
probably orphans and you need to bring them to TWRC for care. Do
not attempt to feed them or give them water!
If you have questions about wildlife, please call TWRC Wildlife Center
at 713-468-TWRC. They are available to answer your questions and
give you guidance on living in harmony with our furry and feathered
friends. TWRC Wildlife Center is a Houston-based wildlife rehabilitation
and education center available to anyone needing assistance
with wildlife. Check our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or
call 713-468-TWRC and don’t forget to donate so we can continue to
help wildlife as we’ve done for 36 years.
FIRST COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION AND THE HOUSTON TEXANS
HOST THEIR ANNUAL “STARS IN THE CLASSROOM” BANQUET
First Community Credit Union, The Official Credit Union of the Houston
Texans and the Personal Choice of Brian Cushing, recognizes and
rewards teachers as Stars in the Classroom.
The sixth annual “Stars in the Classroom” Banquet recognizes ten
educators for making a difference in their schools. “Stars in the Classroom”
is a partnership between First Community Credit Union and the
Houston Texans. As the face of the program, Houston Texans Linebacker,
Brian Cushing welcomed each honoree with a handshake, photo-op
and plaque.
16 Lost Creek | May 2017
Known for being a leader on and off the field, Cushing explained how
much teaching has impacted his adolescent and day-to-day life. From
coaching his son in little league to giving advice to teammates, being
able to teach others has come full circle.
The program begins every year in mid-August and spans till the end
of October. During the contest period, ten teachers are nominated by
past or current students and/or parents that see them go above and
beyond in the classroom. Each deserving teacher is awarded by a surprise
appearance from Brian Cushing or one fellow Houston Texan who
hand-delivers two football tickets, sideline passes, a customized football
with Star Teacher’s name inscribed and a $500 donation to their school
district. The student whose nominated teacher is selected, receives an
autographed Houston Texans football. This year, “Stars in the Classroom”
received around 390 nominations. Nominations are currently closed,
but will open again in August 2017.
During this year’s banquet, FCCU was able to surprise the star Texans
linebacker with a donation check to the Brian Cushing Foundation. The
mission of the foundation is to serve and honor the men and women
who protect our country by providing resources and experiences to
ASK YOUR
NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNER
By Craig Narum CFP®,
area resident
Part 1: Starting Out - Begin Funding
for Your Financial Security
Congratulations! You’ve graduated
from school and landed a job. Your salary,
however, is limited and you don’t
have much money (if any) left at the end of the month. So where can
you find money to save? And, once you find it, where should this cash
go? Here are some ways to help free up the money you need for current
expenses, financial protection and future investments - all without
pushing the panic button.
Get Out From Under. For most young adults, paying down debt is the
first step toward freeing up cash for the financial protection they need.
If you’re spending more than you make, think about areas where you
can cut back. Don’t rule out getting a less expensive apartment, roommates
or trading in a more expensive car for a secondhand model. Other
expenses that could be trimmed include dining out, entertainment and
vacations.
If you owe balances on high-rate credit cards, look into obtaining a
low-interest credit card or bank loan and transferring your existing
balances. Then plan to pay as much as you can each month to reduce
the total balance and try to avoid adding new charges.
If you have student loans, there’s also help to make paying them back
easier. You may be eligible to reduce these payments if you qualify for
the Federal Direct Consolidation Loan program. Though the program
would lengthen the payment time somewhat, it could also free up extra
cash each month to apply to your higher-interest consumer debt. The
program can be reached at 800-557-7392.
What You Really Should Buy. How would you pay the bills if your paychecks
suddenly stopped? That’s when you turn to insurance and personal
savings - two items you should “buy” before considering future
big-ticket purchases.
Health insurance is your first priority. Health care insurance is now also
mandatory under the Affordable Care Act. If you’re not covered under
an employer plan, look into the new state or national health insurance
exchanges, which offer a variety of coverage options and providers to
choose from. You may also qualify for a subsidy if your taxable income
is under 400% of the federal poverty level.
Life insurance is the next logical step, but may only be a concern if you
have dependents.
June 5 - 9
9:00 - noon
Disability insurance should be another consideration. In fact, government
statistics estimate that just over 25% of today’s 20-year-olds will
become disabled before they retire. Disability insurance will replace a
portion of your income if you can’t work for an extended period due to
illness or injury. If you can’t get this through your employer, call individual
insurance companies to compare rates.
Build a Cash Reserve. If you should ever become disabled or lose your
job, you’ll also need savings to fall back on until paychecks start up
again. Try to save at least three months’ worth of living expenses in an
easy-to- access “liquid” account, which includes a checking or savings
account. Saving up emergency cash is easier if your financial institution
has an automatic payroll savings plan. These plans automatically
transfer a designated amount of your salary each pay period - before
you see your paycheck - directly into your account.
at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement
of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control
program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification,
should that animal become lost. Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the
animal control program.
PET ANNOUNCEMENTS
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but please have the courtesy
to scoop when your pet poops during your walks. Throughout the
community trails, you will find areas to toss your pet’s poopage and
in some areas, there are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of your neighbors work
hard with their lawncare and landscaping. Come with a scooper and
a recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking up after your pets
shows your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard
to maintaining their grass!
FT. BEND COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our
residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person.
Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which
could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Although
most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives,
unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a threat to the public. In
addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten
by rabies-infected wildlife.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained
please contact Ft. Bend County Animal Control -281-342-1512
“LEASH LAW” INFORMATION
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to
patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated
as required by law.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats
because they are an important control measure for the public health
threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations
provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked.
3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations.
4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they
can be returned to you if lost.
5. Spay or neuter your pet.
Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their
forever home. Please check out their website at txlabrescue.org.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief
in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as
annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper
or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas
to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how
much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog
barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors
or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street
noise, or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a
cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting
service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility
once or twice a week.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If
your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make
every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your
dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your
family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while
it was ‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground
without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their
property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and
free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property
where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a
substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are
