All about Cinco 

De Mayo! 

Cinco de Mayo means “the fifth of May.” 

Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of a 

battle that took place between the Mexicans 

and the French in 1862. 

• The battle is known as the Battle of 

Puebla and it celebrates Mexico’s victory 

over the French. It also marks a turning 

point in Mexican national pride. The victory made the Mexican people 

very happy and helped create a feeling of national unity. 

• While Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico, it is mainly observed 

in the state capital of Puebla. However, in the United States, it is 

becoming a popular holiday to celebrate Mexican culture. 

• The largest Cinco de Mayo event in the world is held in Los Angeles, 

California, where more than 600,000 people celebrate with music and 

food. The whole event is called Festival de Fiesta Broadway. 

• There aren’t any specific foods associated with Cinco de Mayo, but 

traditional Mexican dishes such as enchiladas, burritos, guacamole and 

tacos are popular. 

• The Mexican flag is green, white and red. The traditional meaning is 

thought to be that green= hope and the independence movement; 

white=purity and religion and red=Spain and union. The emblem in the 

middle consists of an eagle and a snake, based on an Aztec legend.

Mother’s Day - A day for MOM 

Mother’s Day has its roots in ancient 

Greek festivals honoring 

Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. 

The modern American holiday 

officially began in 1914, when 

President Woodrow Wilson 

declared the second Sunday 

in May a day to honor all the 

mothers. Here are some tips 

on celebrating Mother’s Day 

on May 14 th ! 

1. Deliver the classic Mother’s Day treat: breakfast in bed on an old-fashioned 

wicker tray table. Cook her favorite morning fare, mix her an 

eye-opening mimosa and tuck her favorite flowers into a small crystal 

vase. If the tray has slots on the sides, fill them with small presents (or 

big presents in small packages). 

2. Take your mother on a trip with Mother’s Day sandwiched in the middle. 

Make it as simple as a long weekend at the beach or as elaborate as 

a trip across the States. 

3. Surprise your mother with a visit if she lives far away. 

4. Deliver her present by way of a treasure hunt. Lead her on as long a 

trail as you think she’ll find amusing, with her present waiting at the end. 

5. Honor your mother’s memory if she’s no longer living. Send a donation 

to her favorite charity or spend the day working for her favorite cause. 

Do things she taught you to love. 

6. Thank the women who produced your favorite people - send cards, 

flowers or notes to the mothers of your friends, even if you’ve never 

met them. 

7. Throw a Mother’s Day party for your mother, your friends and their 

mothers. Consider a festive spring brunch. 

8. Best tip: tell mom you love her.

KATY ISD SUMMER BAND CAMP 

The fifteenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th , 

8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Tompkins High 

School from July 10 th to July 14 th . The camp will include daily section 

rehearsals, full band rehearsals and fun music based electives. 

Lunch is also part of the camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will 

include a t-shirt if registered by June 5 th . All registrations after that 

date will need to include a late registration fee of $25 totaling $155. 

All registrations must be postmarked by Friday, June 23 rd . The camp 

concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning at 9 AM. 

After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a little 

longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an 

additional $35 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and drinks 

are included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 

5 th ). The KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each 

year and we anticipate a large enrollment again this year. 

Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as 

soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare 

major scales and chromatic scales specific to the student’s instrument, 

as well as a band camp audition etude, which can be downloaded 

from the webpage below. Students will be ability grouped with 

the number of bands being determined by total enrollment for the 

camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and Travel/Emergency 

Treatment Consent Form can be downloaded by campers from the 

Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/finearts. An email 

confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration and follow up 

reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before the camp 

begins, so make sure your email address is clearly printed on the 

registration form. 

The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to 

those who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp 

over the summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will 

receive top quality instruction on their instruments from our own 

great KISD and Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the fifteenth 

annual Katy ISD Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your 

playing skills sharp for the year! Camp brochures, with the registration 

form, will be distributed to KISD band students by their schools’ 

directors. Camp brochures can also be downloaded from the Katy 

ISD Fine Arts webpage above. Plan to register early in order to guarantee 

a spot! Again, registrations must be postmarked by Friday, 

June 23 rd . If you have already registered and have not received your

On March 6, 2017, The Katy Area Retired Teachers (KARE) went on their annual field trip 

to the Taste of Texas Restaurant. Taste of Texas Restaurant owner, Nina Hendee hosted a 

luncheon for the Katy Area Retired Educators (KARE). The Taste of Texas opened in 1977 

and has become a Houston landmark steakhouse. Hendee is an expert historian and

QUALIFIES FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 

The Cinco Ranch High School Robotics Team 624 (CRyptonite) punched 

their ticket to the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science 

and Technology) Robotics Competition World Championship by winning 

the coveted Regional Chairman’s Award at the Hub City Regional 

qualifying tournament. 

The most prestigious award at FIRST, the Chairman’s Award honors 

one team at each qualifying tournament that best represents a model 

for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals 

of FIRST. CRyptonite, along with winning teams from all other tournaments 

this season, is now eligible for the Chairman’s Award presented 

at the FIRST World Championship. 

Because of the increase in size of the FIRST programs, this season’s 

World Championships will be held in two cities, Houston and St. Louis. 

CRyptonite competed in Houston April 19 th -22 nd at the George R. Brown 

Convention Center. The finals were held at Minute Maid Park.

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing fast. 

Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals including 

plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia, sunflowers, 

yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants, 

okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil, 

peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you 

don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and 

there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight 

sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long 

to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better 

yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to 

deter weeds from getting a start. 

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to 

promote new blooms. 

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release 

organic fertilizer. 

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent light 

sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! 

Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding spots.

MEMORIAL WEEKEND GETAWAYS 

Here are some celebrations across America that offered something 

special in honor of the Memorial Day holiday: 

Palm Springs, Calif.: For guaranteed summer weather 

While most beach seasons are just beginning, Memorial Day marks 

the end of bearable temps in the desert, so hotels and operators are 

running specials for the holiday. Though other parts of California will 

be in the midst of “May Gray” and “June Gloom,” Palm Springs still has 

nonstop sunshine-plus dozens of vintage shops, acclaimed restaurants 

and an enduring love for all things mid-century (its hotels and private 

homes offer some of the best examples of 1950s modern architecture 

in the country). 

Washington, D.C.: For patriotism, pomp and circumstance 

Washington D.C. is the most patriotic place to celebrate the holiday, 

with a parade and plenty of pomp and circumstance taking place during 

special military ceremonies. Arlington National Cemetery-which celebrated 

its 150 th anniversary in May 2014-hosts a wreath-laying ceremony

Saint Louis: For the ultimate treasure hunt 

Don’t miss the largest flea market in the Midwest, Gypsy Caravan, an 

annual Memorial Day event organized for the 44 th year by the St. Louis 

Symphony Volunteer Association. 

The Jersey Shore: For family fun and rides along the iconic Boardwalk 

Steel Pier, Atlantic City’s popular oceanside amusement park, debuted 

eight new rides in 2013. Outside Atlantic City, check out the annual Wildwoods 

International Kite Festival, the largest in North America, Friday 

thru Monday, an event that starts Friday at noon with the “Unlocking 

of the Ocean” media event. 

Austin: For boating season and outdoor fun 

Head to Lake Travis to soak up some of Austin’s best weather of the year, 

with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the eighties. Memorial Day 

kicks off boating season here, so the place to be is the lake.

BABY BOOM

Spring is the time when animals are looking for secluded locations 

for giving birth and raising their babies. Sometimes these sites aren’t 

so “human-friendly” like attics, chimneys or in your garage. The BEST 

solution when this happens is to leave them alone until they move 

out but if you must move them, please use HUMANE methods to do 

so. If possible, postpone your tree trimming until later in the season. 

Squirrels, birds and raccoons nest in trees and you could easily displace 

baby animals by cutting down limbs and trees. 

Here are a few tips to help save the babies this spring: 

RE-NEST BABY BIRDS: If you’re like me, I was told growing up that 

one should never touch a baby bird because the mom will reject it. 

This is a myth. If you find a baby bird and it appears uninjured, place 

it back in the nest. If you can’t reach the nest, you can place the bird 

in a shallow basket or box and hang it as close to the nest as possible. 

In most cases, mom will continue to care for it. If the bird is injured 

or the mom isn’t feeding the baby, it’s time to intervene. Place the 

baby in a small, covered container and bring it as soon as possible 

to TWRC Wildlife Center. Do not attempt to feed it or give it water! 

RACCOONS IN THE ATTIC: If you can’t wait until mom moves out 

on her own, you can “encourage” her to move by leaving lights on in 

the area all night. Place a radio in the area and play it loudly. It may 

take a couple of days but she will soon tire of the light and the noise 

and move her little ones. Then MAKE SURE you repair the opening 

where she got in. 

One other helpful information about raccoons. During late spring 

and summer, you may see raccoons out during the day. Raccoons 

are nocturnal EXCEPT if they are nursing moms. It is not uncommon 

for females to be out during daylight hours looking for food. It does 

NOT mean she has rabies. 

FAWNS: It’s normal for a doe to “park” her fawn and leave it there for 

hours while she goes off to eat. The fawns instinctively know that they 

must stay there until she returns and unless she has been injured, 

she WILL return. Since fawns are odorless, predators are unable to 

pick up their scent. When the fawn is about a month old, it will begin 

traveling with mom but in the meantime, please LEAVE IT ALONE! 

BABY RABBITS: If the babies are not injured and the nest is intact, 

leave them alone. Just like a mama doe, rabbits only visit their young 

two to three times a day. Here’s a good test if you think the babies 

really have been orphaned. Use sticks or trigs and make an “X” over 

the nest. If, after 12 hours, the “X” is still in place, the bunnies are 

probably orphans and you need to bring them to TWRC for care. Do 

not attempt to feed them or give them water!

An event that brings the community and combat veterans and their 

families together. Registration is now open for the 13th Annual Impact 

a Hero 5K, one of Impact a Hero’s major fundraising events of the 

year. This year, the race will be held May 20, 2017 at the Constellation 

Field and will feature the traditional 5K Run/Walk/Wheel and Kids 1K 

beginning at 7 AM. 

The 5K registration is $25 for untimed and $35 for timed. The 5K wheel 

is $25. The Kids 1K is $15. Prices increase on May 13th and again on

The Titmouse Club 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored 

by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every 

Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September 

until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester 

Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme and may include 

nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. For

1930s, Galveston was host to the Pageant of Pulchritude (predecessor to the

event is featuring a speakeasy themed Friday Revue Prevue featuring live 

music with Dandy Wellington and His Band from New York City and the official

1 ST ANNUAL KATY COLOR RUN ATTRACTS 

MORE THAN 700 ATTENDEES 

On March 25 th , over 700 local residents attended the 1 st annual Katy 

Color Run. The event got off to a colorful start with a 1K Kids’ Dash and 

was followed by a chalk filled 5K. The run was held at the APEX medical 

building at 25277 Kingsland Boulevard in Katy. 

Jackson Potter, 12 and Alexia Diermeier, 15 were the top male and female 

finishers in the 5K. Potter finished with a time of 19:47 and Diermeier 

clocked in at 21:58. Paloma Medrano, 8 and Kian Ghilzadeh, 11 were the 

winners of the Kids’ Dash 1K. 

Entertainment at the post race party included performances by Marshall 

Camp and Mark Wells and featured fitness demonstrations by 

the Katy Main Street YMCA. Talented local chalk artists created colorful 

masterpieces. Several local vendors attended the event and offered 

complementary beverages and snacks to runners and spectators. A kids 

zone had games, face painting, balloon artists, inflatables, trampolines 

and healthy snacks. 

All proceeds from the Color Run benefited three local nonprofit organizations: 

Christ Clinic, Clothed by Faith and Hope Impacts. Christ Clinic 

is a charity health clinic and provides medical care for uninsured and 

underinsured patients. Clothed by Faith gives gently used and new 

clothing to thousands of Katy area residents in need. Hope Impacts 

imparts hope to homeless, helpless and under resourced people in the 

Katy area by connecting them to services and resources. 

The presenting sponsor of the Color Run was Kingsland Baptist. Other 

lead sponsors were Healthy Gourmet and the City of Katy. More than 

100 volunteers helped make the event a success.

hard with their lawncare and landscaping. Come with a scooper and

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our 

residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running 

at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. 

Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which 

could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Although 

most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, 

unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a threat to the public. In 

addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten 

by rabies-infected wildlife.

“LEASH LAW” INFORMATION 

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to 

patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated 

as required by law. 

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If 

your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make 

every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ 

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your 

dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your 

family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while 

it was ‘roaming free.’ 

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground 

without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. 

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their 

property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and 

free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property 

where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a 

substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are

5. Spay or neuter your pet.

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief 

in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as 

annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper 

or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas 

to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! 

• Training. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how 

much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog 

barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. 

• Citronella collars. 

• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors 

or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. 

• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street 

noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. 

• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a 

cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting 

service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility 

once or twice a week.

FIRST COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION AND THE HOUSTON TEXANS 

HOST THEIR ANNUAL “STARS IN THE CLASSROOM” BANQUET 

First Community Credit Union, The Official Credit Union of the Houston 

Texans and the Personal Choice of Brian Cushing, recognizes and 

rewards teachers as Stars in the Classroom. 

The sixth annual “Stars in the Classroom” Banquet recognizes ten 

educators for making a difference in their schools. “Stars in the 

Classroom” is a partnership between First Community Credit Union 

and the Houston Texans. As the face of the program, Houston Texans 

Linebacker, Brian Cushing welcomed each honoree with a handshake, 

photo-op and plaque. 

Known for being a leader on and off the field, Cushing explained how 

much teaching has impacted his adolescent and day-to-day life. From 

coaching his son in little league to giving advice to teammates, being 

able to teach others has come full circle. 

The program begins every year in mid-August and spans till the end 

of October. During the contest period, ten teachers are nominated 

by past or current students and/or parents that see them go above 

and beyond in the classroom. Each deserving teacher is awarded by a 

surprise appearance from Brian Cushing or one fellow Houston Texan 

who hand-delivers two football tickets, sideline passes, a customized 

football with Star Teacher’s name inscribed and a $500 donation 

to their school district. The student whose nominated teacher is

Part 1: Starting Out - Begin Funding 

for Your Financial Security 

Congratulations! You’ve graduated 

from school and landed a job. Your 

salary, however, is limited and you 

don’t have much money (if any) left 

at the end of the month. So where can you find money to save? And, 

once you find it, where should this cash go? Here are some ways to 

help free up the money you need for current expenses, financial protection 

and future investments - all without pushing the panic button. 

Get Out From Under. For most young adults, paying down debt is 

the first step toward freeing up cash for the financial protection 

they need. If you’re spending more than you make, think about areas 

where you can cut back. Don’t rule out getting a less expensive 

apartment, roommates or trading in a more expensive car for a 

secondhand model. Other expenses that could be trimmed include 

dining out, entertainment and vacations. 

If you owe balances on high-rate credit cards, look into obtaining a 

low-interest credit card or bank loan and transferring your existing 

balances. Then plan to pay as much as you can each month to reduce 

the total balance and try to avoid adding new charges. 

If you have student loans, there’s also help to make paying them back 

easier. You may be eligible to reduce these payments if you qualify for 

the Federal Direct Consolidation Loan program. Though the program 

would lengthen the payment time somewhat, it could also free up 

extra cash each month to apply to your higher-interest consumer 

debt. The program can be reached at 800-557-7392. 

What You Really Should Buy. How would you pay the bills if your 

paychecks suddenly stopped? That’s when you turn to insurance and 

personal savings - two items you should “buy” before considering 

future big-ticket purchases. 

Health insurance is your first priority. Health care insurance is now 

also mandatory under the Affordable Care Act. If you’re not covered 

under an employer plan, look into the new state or national health 

insurance exchanges, which offer a variety of coverage options and 

providers to choose from. You may also qualify for a subsidy if your 

taxable income is under 400% of the federal poverty level. 

Life insurance is the next logical step, but may only be a concern if 

you have dependents. 

Disability insurance should be another consideration. In fact, government 

statistics estimate that just over 25% of today’s 20-year-olds will 

become disabled before they retire. Disability insurance will replace 

a portion of your income if you can’t work for an extended period due 

to illness or injury. If you can’t get this through your employer, call 

individual insurance companies to compare rates. 

Build a Cash Reserve. If you should ever become disabled or lose your 

job, you’ll also need savings to fall back on until paychecks start up 

again. Try to save at least three months’ worth of living expenses in 

an easy-to- access “liquid” account, which includes a checking or 

savings account. Saving up emergency cash is easier if your financial 

institution has an automatic payroll savings plan. These plans 

automatically transfer a designated amount of your salary each pay 

period - before you see your paycheck - directly into your account.

VERMICELLI SALAD 

1 (12oz.) package Vermicelli, cooked and drained 

4 Tbsp olive oil 

3 Tbsp lemon juice 

½ Tsp Allspice 

On first day, combine cooked Vermicelli, olive oil, lemon 

juice and allspice. Cover and refrigerate oernight. 

2 Cups mayonnaise 

1 bell pepper, chopped 

1 cup chopped celery 

½ cup chopped onion 

1 4ounce jar pimiento 

1 ( 6-8ox) can pitted ripe olives chopped 

1 5 oz can water chestnuts, drained and sliced 

Salt and pepper to taste 

Optional: 2 ½ cup canned ham, cooked chicken breast, 

shrimp, or cooked hambuger 

Second day, add the rest of ingredients & mix well, refrigerate. 

CEVECHE 

2lbs cooked shrimp 

1.5 lbs. cooked white fish (cod) 

Pico 

6 tomatoes 

1/2 red onion 

2 cloves garlic 

cilantro to taste 

1 minced jalapeno 

juice on one lime 

salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste 

Mix pico and shredded fish. Marinate in the juice 

of 4 to 6 limes. Better if you make ahead one day. 

Serve on tostada with jalapeno ranch dressing, 

avocado, minced jalapeno. 

NEIMAN MARCUS BROWNIES 

1 box butter pecan cake mix (Betty Crocker) 

or Choc. cake mix 

1 cup softened butter 

3 eggs 

1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened 

1 tsp. vanilla extract 

1 pound box powdered sugar 

1 1/2 cups chopped pecans 

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 x 13 inch 

cake pan. Mix cake mix, 1/2 cup butter and 1 egg. Press into 

pan. In a separate bowl, combine softened cream cheese, 

1/2 c. butter, remaining 2 eggs, vanilla and powdered sugar 

until smooth. Pour over cake mixture. Sprinkle top with 

pecans. Bake about 55 minutes or until filling appears set 

when pan is gently shaken. Cool completely on wire rack. 

Cut into bars of desired size.
