is £46, the refills £19.50 – but if that’s going to blow your
budget, check out M.A.C. Pro Palettes – a vast selection of
empty palettes ranging from two to nine slots for your chosen
shades, starting at just two quid for the smallest empty.
Of course, palettes aren’t just about eyes. My most-used
palette is probably Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and
Glow, £49 – the most wonderfully seamless, flattering bronzer
that I wear even in winter, accompanied by a shimmering
highlighter which I use on the inner corner of lids and on
brows to light up the face. It’s incredibly ‘buildable’ – so
in winter, just a touch; in summer, more sun-kissed.
I see less point in a lip palette, frankly. Most of us want to
slip a single shade into our handbags for a quick on-the-go
touch-up swipe – because who can be bothered to blend a load
of different colours or textures to get a so-called ‘perfect’ shade,
in our busy lives…? Lip palettes, then, are fine for keeping
on the dressing table – but on the go…? Just more work for
the chiropractor, lugging around all that weight. Having said
that, I am rather taken with the very affordable Maybelline
Lip Contour Palette, £9.99, in the suits-all-skintones Blushed
Bombshell line-up – or for lovers of reds, there’s Crimson
Vixen, featuring a primer, liner, gloss and more. Alternatively,
because lipstick choices are so, so personal, I like to smoosh my
lipsticks into a Perspex case to carry them around. Screenface’s
brilliant option appears to have been discontinued, but if
you input ‘empty lipstick case’ into eBay, several similar
alternatives come up which are very reasonably priced.
So the bottom line: if you’re really, truly, cross-yourheart
going to use all the shades – or can personalize an
empty case with the perfect colours and textures of your
preference – then the right palette can make an artist out of
anyone. But my advice remains: no matter how alluring their
glimmer, shimmer and rainbow-esque qualities, I suggest
you leave the ‘My Little Pony’ palettes to the under-20s.
