MEN’S
HEALTH AND FITNESS FAIR
The MEN’S HEALTH AND FITNESS FAIR, has been added to address a vital
need to educate and screen men about their health and the lifestyles they lead that
contribute to their health disparities.
With over 11 million workers, construction is one of the largest industries in the
U.S. The industry has one of the highest rates of work-related injuries and suicides,
and also has a high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain among its workers.
A 2012 study found that 40% of construction workers over age 50 had chronic
back pain. Another 2012 study found that injured workers were 45% more likely
to be diagnosed with depression than non-injured workers. Other recent studies
have found construction workers to have double the suicide rate of the general
population. Construction workers are frequently stressed about work-related injuries
and pain, and often fail to seek help, putting themselves at risk for more injuries
and mental health issues, according to a study by researchers at Harvard
School of Public Health (HSPH). 1
The HEALTH FAIR presents an opportunity for men in the building industry to experience
many different ways to change their lives for the better by bringing health
industry professionals to 1) engage them through dialogue and screenings and
2) educate and encourage them on how they can make improvements in their health and hence, their lives.
Experts have recognized that historically, men are much too casual about, and disinterested in their own health. Their
misguided aversion to taking serious interest in their health is contributing to the very things they fear most – illness and
even death.
And since Prevention is paramount for a man to witness good health, timely guidance from health and medical professionals,
to enlighten them about the importance of staying on top of their health is key. This knowledge can keep a small
problem from turning into a big one. Knowing the facts, being proactive, and taking advantage of the numerous advancements
in healthcare today can make all the difference in a man’s quality of – and length of – life.
The goal of the MEN’S HEALTH AND FITNESS FAIR, is to bring the most up-to-date information from local, regional
and national health and fitness experts in an effort 1) to decrease the risk of preventable diseases, 2) assess their current
status, 3) assist in altering bad habits, 4) allay fears, 5) help them gain control over their lives, 6) abate misconceptions, 7)
mitigate incorrect information and 8) positively impact their health habits. Below are the leading causes of death for men
