WELCOME TO THE ALL GOLD
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
4
Welcome to this issue of the
All Gold. After a while without
a home game, we now have
three in quick succession.
We entertain the Crusaders
in the League 1 Cup today
and again in the League
in a fortnight, with a game
against York next week as the
filling in the sandwich.
Both clubs are below us in
the table and so, if that is
to be believed, we should
be looking to win all three
games.
Anyone who has seen Lee
Greenwood’s side play this
season would have noticed
that they are capable of
beating anyone. This point
was noted by assistant coach
Anthony Murray in League
Express the other week: “We
go into every game thinking
we can win, and we’ve got
the squad to do it,” he said. “If
we do things right and stick
to the game plan then we’re
more than capable of beating
anyone in this division.”
The League 1 Cup marks a
welcome opportunity for the
All Golds to reach a major
final and a chance to win
silverware as Lee said this
week: “We’re still a relatively
new club and there aren’t too
many cup semi-finals we’ll be
able to get to, so this is the
best chance we’ll have to get
to a final.” Let’s hope the boys
take that chance this time.
The last issue of the All Gold
looked back at half a dozen
significant games from the
club’s previous 100 matches
and today’s match could be
featuring in a similar reflection
when the double century
appears in a few years’ time
should the All Golds win
and advance to the final at
Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road
ground on the late May bank
holiday weekend.
On behalf of the club I’d like
to wish Crusaders’ prop John
Cookson the very best for a
full recovery from the heart
attack he suffered after his
side’s loss to Toronto on
Good Friday. Thankfully,
he is out of hospital and
recovering at home with his
family. Whether he will don
the boots again is unclear
and the Crusaders are of
course providing whatever
support they can. We add our
good wishes to the many he
has received from across the
country.
The fixtures for the West of
England league are out and
with the competition starting
in a fortnight it is well worth
getting to a game if you
can. They are usually great
entertainment and there are
opportunities to get involved
with your local team.
On a personal level, I’d
certainly encourage people
to volunteer. It will help the
game grow stronger here in
Gloucestershire and bring
some uniquely rewarding
experiences to those putting
in the time and effort.
Of course I must say huge
thanks once again to all have
contributed to this issue of
the All Gold and to Craig at
CPD for burning the midnight
oil to pull it all together into
such a handsome package.
And to you for reading:
Thanks a lot guys!
ALL GOLD CRUSADERS
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
In the All Golds’ recent Good Friday victory
over the South Wales Ironmen, there were
eight players who have turned out in the
colours of both clubs.
Although not as many have made the journey
to and from North Wales there are three
players who could make an appearance
against their former club in this week’s match
against the Crusaders. Billy Brickhill joined the
All Golds for the start of this season whilst Alex
Davidson and Callum Mulkeen are former All
Golds in the Crusaders squad.
Brickhill came to the Cru last season via
Chester Gladiators and the Salford City Reds
Academy and won the Welsh Club’s Young
Player of the Year Award before moving to the
All Golds on the recommendation of our shy
and retiring assistant coach Anthony Murray
who was himself head coach of the Crusaders
before joining us.
Alex Davidson spent a season and a half with
the All Golds, debuting in a 46-6 home defeat
y York in 2015. The following year, he doubled
up as coach of the BUCS student side and was
also in charge of the All Golds’ Conference
League South side last summer.
The Bolton-born prop forward is in his second
spell at Wrexham having played on loan for
the Crusaders in 2014 prior to joining the All
Golds. Previously with the Salford City Reds
Alex made three Super League appearances
for them in 2011 as well as having a short loan
spell with Oldham in 2014.
Callum Mulkeen moved to the West Country
with his mates Phil Cowburn and Matt Bradley
to study at Hartpury College where they joined
the Gloucestershire Warriors helping them to
the 2011 West of England title. All three then
joined the University of Gloucestershire and
played for the student side in 2011 and 2012
- the latter as part of the national University
championship winners.
Callum was a regular in the centre or on the
wing in the All Golds inaugural season and
scored the first ever try for the club in our
opening match against Hemel Stags. After
a season at Oxford he returned to the All
Golds for a further season before heading to
Australia to play for country side Tumut Blues.
Back home in Lancashire “Mulk” signed for
the Crusaders in January this year and scored
a try against his former teammates when
the sides met in the Challenge Cup back in
February. With a World Cup on the horizon,
he will be keen to resume his career as an Irish
international player.
Three other players have also appeared for
both clubs - prop forward Chris Tyrer (briefly
on loan for both clubs), hooker Owain Griffiths
(the son of former Crusaders coach Clive
Griffiths) and Matt Bradley who played a
couple of games on loan from Swinton for the
Crusaders.
7
Matt is still the record goal- and points-scorer
for the All Golds from his three seasons playing
for us and is currently at Sale FC playing
Rugby Union.
ALL GOLDS vs. CRUSADERS
MATCH PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
The All Golds host the Crusaders at the
Prince of Wales stadium with the winners
progressing to the final of the League 1 Cup
in Blackpool on May 27.
Should his side win it would be their first
appearance in a final and the All Golds coach
says he hopes his players can perform to the
standard that has seen them start the 2017
season strongly. He said: “I gave the players
a week off after the South Wales game so
we’re looking forward to Sunday. It’s the
biggest game in the history of the club.
All Golds head coach Lee Greenwood is
anticipating a tough test from North Wales
Crusaders on Sunday in a game he calls ‘the
biggest in the club’s history’.
“We’ve had some good wins for far this
season and this is another big challenge.
We’re looking forward to it but we know
Crusaders will be a tough test. They’ve
certainly improved since we knocked
them out of the Challenge Cup a couple of
months back. They’re a dangerous side with
www.allgoldsrugby.com
a lot of good players. We need to make sure
we deal with the threats they carry.
“It would be massive for the club, and great
for southern rugby league, if we could
win.
“I thought we were really
good early on against South
Wales last time out but
the injury to Steven Nield
disrupted our momentum
and we had to switch players
about. We weren’t at our
best after that but we got
the win. We’ve got a number
of injury doubts for Sunday
so there might be a few
changes. It doesn’t concern
me really though because the
players that could come in are
more than capable, they showed
that in the last round at Workington.”
Alex Gaskell will definitely miss the game
through injury. Half back Ben Stead, injured
in the opening league fixture at Hunslet,
won’t play but is confident of returning from
his knee injury in the next fortnight. Front
rower James Walter is also expected to miss
the game but Harry Kidd and Malikhi Lloyd-
Jones could return after they missed the
South Wales game on international duty.
Since losing 36-18 to the All
Golds in the Challenge Cup
the Crusaders have steadied
the ship and have picked up
several impressive victories.
If you take out their defeat
to champions elect Toronto
Wolfpack last time out they
come into Sunday’s game
on the back of three straight
wins. Their first league
points came with a 26-22
win at York and they followed
that up a week later with a 24-
16 triumph at Newcastle in the
League 1 Cup quarter final. They
made it three in a row a week later
when they took care of Newcastle by an
impressive 30-14 scoreline.
The victors will play the winners of Barrow
v Oxford.
FORM
SQUAD
The Crusaders had a shaky start to the
season, losing 50-8 to Keighley and 44-8 to
Doncaster, but seem to have really picked
up their game as of late. They come into the
game with some good wins under their belt,
winning two out of their last three. After
strong wins over York and Newcastle, Mike
Grady’s men went down 80-0 to Toronto,
the Wolfpack’s biggest winning margin
so far. The Canadian outfit dominated the
first half, going in 60-0 at the break, but
a stubborn defensive performance in the
second period was a real positive to be
taken away from the game.
BACKS
The midfield trio of Tommy Johnson, Jack
Hansen and Ryan Smith are North Wales’
biggest threat. All three are good ballplayers
and are constantly looking to provide
opportunities for the men out wide. These
include Earl Hurst and former All Gold Callum
Mulkeen in the centres, and ex-Rochdale
wingers Corey Lee and Dale Bloomfield. Back
Rower Alex Thompson can also put in a shift in
the centres if needed, making just as much of
an impact as he does in the forwards.
FORWARDS
The North Wales forward pack can certainly
make and impact, giving the side plenty of
size and power. Alex Davidson is yet another
familiar face to All Golds fans, after spending
two years at the Prince of Wales. He and
Jonny Walker form a formidable front row
pairing, while Lee Hudson and James Dandy
interchange at dummy half. Ex-Widnes second
rower Jack Houghton has made a huge impact
since arriving at the club in November, scoring
three tries in eight appearances, and earning a
consistent starting spot.
KEY MAN
goal kickers in the competition. He put in an
inspired performance in the club’s last win over
Newcastle, and a repeat of that could cause
some problems for the All Golds in today’s
game.
ONE TO WATCH
Left centre Earl Hurst is a real athlete out
wide, boasting size and speed that make him
a real handful for defenders. He is almost like
a forward in the way he is built, with a strong
upper body that allows him to drive forward
and make yards in all areas of the field, while
his burst of pace makes him a great threat. He
caused problems for the All Golds defence
when the two teams last met in the Challenge
Cup in February, even crossing for a try. And
with proven try scorer Dale Bloomfield on his
outside, Crusaders’ left flank pose a real threat
in attack.
fullback Tommy
Johnson has
become part of
the furniture at
the Racecourse
Ground, after
joining in their
inaugural
League 1 season in 2012. In just four years he
has set the club record for appearances, and
is just short of reaching 1,000 points for the
Crusaders. As far as reliable fullbacks go, you
can’t look too far past Johnson in League 1,
additionally he is undoubtedly one of the best
SKOLARS DROP
ON A WIN
ALL GOLDS 22-24 SKOLARS
SUNDAY 9 TH APRIL
PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
Putting back-to back wins together is one
of the All Golds’ greatest challenges and so
it has proved over the past couple of weeks.
Not since the first two games of the season
had they won consecutive matches and they
returned to the Prince of Wales Stadium hoping
to build on the tremendous performance at
Workington when they reached the League
1 Cup semi finals for the second year running.
There the All Golds faced a London Skolars
side that had won each of its four visits to
Gloucestershire and had a couple of old
friends in Josh Allison and Lamont Bryan in
their ranks.
The All Golds rode the positive vibe from
Cumbria into the opening quarter and built
a 16-4 lead with some great play. There were
tries from Steve Parry – his 50th for the club –
Mo Agoro from a superb Kieran Hyde kick and
Joe McClean who supported Phil Cowburn’s
coruscating break from halfway, but only led
by 20-10 at the interval thanks to Agoro’s
second touchdown engineered brilliantly by
Jay Lobwein and Billy Brickhill.
The second half was a vastly different story
as the All Golds failed to cross the whitewash.
The Skolars fought back with two converted
tries to lead 22-20 and though Kieran Hyde
knocked over a penalty to tie the scores, two
late drop goals from Charlie Lawrence proved
the difference.
Lee Greenwood was unhappy with his side’s
second half performance: “The second half
was pretty poor really,” he said. “We know
what Skolars are about and what they are
good at and what they do and we couldn’t
combat it at all.
“I thought their middles totally got on top of
ours in the second half and we weren’t smart
enough to do anything about it really.”
IRONMEN 30-36 ALL GOLDS
FRIDAY 14 TH APRIL
MERTHYR RFC
Again the All Golds wasted an excellent start to
be clinging on at the end of an absorbing contest
between two derby rivals. Tries from Mo Agoro
and Harrison Elliott had the All Golds 10-0 up in
just five minutes but the Ironmen got back into
the game and the All Golds were thankful to
take an 18-12 advantage into the dressing rooms
following a 70-metre interception try from Agoro
and a penalty each.
The second half was forty minutes of mayhem.
Both sides scored three tries and both had the
advantage of an extra man so that by the time
the final ten minutes arrived, there was barely a
score between the sides.
The fun began with Chris Vitalini having a ten
minute rest and during that time the All Golds
added a penalty and a converted try from Phil
Cowburn to seemingly take the game by the
scruff of the neck leading 26-12.
It wasn’t the case and the Ironmen piled on the
pressure and added a try and two goals, with
only a Brad Kislingbury try keeping the All Golds
32-20 ahead. The Ironmen scored again and with
Chris Barlow in the sin-bin, Izaak Duffy crashed
over to make the score 32-30. Amazingly,
Courtney Davies hit the outside of the post with
the conversion that would have levelled the score.
A mistake at the restart handed the All Golds an
opportunity and they took it, Agoro touching
down for his tenth try in the league this season
to make the score 36-30 with ten excruciating
minutes still to play.
It was tense, with the visitors’ line taking a
pounding as the Ironmen pressed right up to the
final hooter and beyond.
But the All Golds rode out the storm – just – to
record a much needed win.
Unfortunately, a rib injury to the luckless Graham
O’Keeffe took something of the shine from the
side’s ninth straight win over the men from South
Wales.
ALL GOLDS: Nield; Agoro (3t), Cowburn (t),
Kislingbury (t), Barlow; Ward, Hyde (6g); Elliott
(t), Parry, Purslow; McClean, Worrall; Brickhill; I
NTERCHANGE: Lobwein, O’Keeffe, Walter,
FLAME OF THE WEST
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
WEST OF ENGLAND 9s TO KICK OFF SEASON
16
Next weekend the West of England kicks off
the 2017 season with the annual 9s tournament
in Swindon.
The event is fast becoming a fixture in
the calendar and an ideal way to kick off
proceedings with all the clubs gathering in a
competitive yet friendly atmosphere to look
forward to the season ahead.
The inaugural winners of the 9s were
Cheltenham Phoenix who defeated Bath
Romans in the final while the Phoenix reached
the final again the following last year only to go
down to Oxford Cavaliers in a thrilling final.
The Swindon St George club have worked hard
to establish the event with the Supermarine
Sports Club an excellent venue for the
competition.
As last year, the West of England league is again split into two pools but
this time there is an East-West geographical split, though Bristol Sonics
agreed to make up the numbers in the East to ensure there were the
same number of sides in each pool.
The first week’s fixtures on 13 May are:
Pool 1
Swindon St George A vs. Cheltenham Phoenix
Bath & Wiltshire Romans vs. Somerset Vikings
Forest Bulldogs vs. Gloucestershire Warriors
Pool 2
Bath RL vs. Bristol Sonics
Portsmouth Navy Seahawks vs. Swindon St George
Oxford Cavaliers vs. Southampton Spitfires
