WELCOME TO
THE ALL GOLD
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
4
Welcome to this issue of the
All Gold – the last of the regular
season before we embark on the
League 1 Shield.
The last game in the regular
season sees us entertain
Doncaster - a club who
have known long periods of
disappointment in the past. These
were documented in a famous
TV programme, “Another Bloody
Sunday”. George Cowburn has
written an entertaining potted
history of the Dons for the All
Gold and the programme is well
worth a watch on YouTube.
With a tough conclusion to the
regular season winding up with
today’s game with a strong
Doncaster side Lee Greenwood’s
side could finish the season
anywhere between ninth and
12th depending on results
elsewhere. Similarly, the Dons
could finish fourth, fifth or sixth
again depending on results, so it’s
really all to play for.
Keep in touch with the All Golds’
web site and twitter feed for
the play-off fixtures due to be
announced early next week.
Last weekend was a big one
for the All Golds. The result was
pretty much what the bookies
predicted but the performance
was full of character and
determination. On at least half a
dozen occasions, the Wolfpack
were prevented from grounding
the ball after crossing the
whitewash, while Lewis Reece’s
try was a superbly worked score.
The scenes captured by Patrick
Baines’ excellent twitter coverage
revealed a group of people who
embraced the trip positively and
did themselves and the club
great credit by their efforts both
on and off the field.
One sad note of the weekend
was the minute’s silence prior to
the match in memory of Adam
Cooper, the Culcheth Eagles
player who passed away during
his team’s match. We extend our
sympathies to his family and point
out that there is a Just Giving
page set up to raise funds for
his young family at https://www.
justgiving.com/crowdfunding/
culchethcarney2017
Then we heard of another terrible
tragedy to hit the game with
the passing of Stanley Rangers
youngster Evan Hawksworth
who sustained a head injury
during an U14s game. Stanley
Rangers have also set up a
Just Giving page (https://www.
justgiving.com/fundraising/evanhawksworth)
to support Evan’s
family at this desperately sad
time.
A minute’s applause will take
place before today’s game to
celebrate Evan’s life.
On a lighter note, Derrell Olpherts’
transfer to Salford shows that,
just occasionally, the League 1
scene is noticed by the top clubs
even though the media tends
to ignore both League 1 and the
Championship. This is a matter
that Championship clubs were
due to discuss at a meeting last
week. However, nothing was
decided according to League
Express, though clubs were
strongly in favour of ending the
League 1 Cup while keeping the
League 1 structure the same as it
has been for the last two seasons.
The RFL board will now consider
the ‘indicators’ of Championship
and League 1 clubs’ thinking
before putting any final proposals
to the Board.
Finally, unable to make the trip to
Toronto, the All Golds Supporters
club made their annual trek to
Perpignan and managed to
catch the Wigan Warriors’ win
over Catalan Dragons. The result
was a
good one for Wigan who seem
to be coming out of their worst
run of results since 1903, while the
Dragons are struggling to avoid
the Middle 8s.
This reminds us what a strange
Super League season we have
had so far with Castleford and
Salford deservedly leading the
way and Warrington and Wigan
struggling to make the top four.
It all makes for a fascinating last
fortnight before the play-offs
begin.
Once again, it’s a big thank you to
all our contributors to this issue of
the All Gold and to Craig Mitchell
at Craig Paul Design for putting
it all together. I hope you enjoy
reading what’s on offer.
NO MORE BLOODY
SUNDAYS
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
In 1980, Yorkshire TV aired a programme
called Another Bloody Sunday chronicling
Doncaster’s 1979 season and their attempts
over the last four matches of the season to
finally win a league game.
The title came from long-serving local
winger Stuart Piper who said “You wake
up on a Sunday morning and it’s there.
Another bloody Sunday – it’s there.” Also
featured heavily (literally) was Londoner
Tony Banham who scored the winning
try in Doncaster’s 6-3 victory over Geoff
Fletcher’s Huyton team in the last game of
the season at Tattersfield, the Dons home
ground.
The programme is still available on YouTube
and makes grim watching at times - training
in virtual darkness, a dilapidated stadium,
tiny changing rooms with communal baths
and defeat after defeat after defeat.
The celebrations after the Dons finally got
a win were something else, though, as was
the warmth, comradeship and loyalty of the
team and its faithful band of supporters.
Doncaster joined the league in 1951 along
with Cardiff who only lasted one season.
Despite a respectable 11th place finish in
the league, which consisted of all 31 clubs,
life was a struggle for the Dons until the
1990s.
Starting off with a 10-3 win over Wakefield
Trinity at the Doncaster Greyhound
Stadium in front of a crowd of seven and
www.allgoldsrugby.com
Money troubles were never
far away however and new
owner John Wright had
to rescue the club in 1991
before announcing in 1997
that the club would have
to be liquidated unless
new owners were found
who arrived in the shape
of Shane Miller and Craig
Harrison.
In 2007 the club moved to
the new Keepmoat Stadium
on the edge of town and
dropped their short lived
‘Lakers’ moniker to be
known as the Dons again.
a half thousand the Dons
moved to a new stadium
on Bentley Road in 1953,
which was later renamed
Tattersfield in honour
of former chairman Len
Tattersfield.
Success was elusive,
however. Between 1956
and 1961 Doncaster were
bottom of the league every
year, in the bottom three
between 1963 and 1968
and only twice out of the
bottom three between 1970
and 1985.
The appointment of
former Great Britain
international Tony Fisher -
a tough uncompromising
Welshman - as coach
heralded happier times in
the 1990s. Promotion from
Division 2 was achieved in
the 1993/4 season when
Doncaster finished second
behind Workington Town.
Overseas players such
as Jamie Bloem (who
later became a referee),
Vila Matautia and Sonny
Whakarau and stalwarts like
Audley Pennant, Tony Miller
and Robert ‘Rocky’ Turner
formed the backbone of
the team.
A sensational start in the
top division with wins over
St Helens, Widnes and
Wakefield Trinity saw the
Dons briefly on top of the
league. Sadly it did not
last and Doncaster finished
their only season in the top
flight at the bottom, their
last win coming against
Hull on 15 January (winter
rugby league in those days,
of course).
Relegation and liquidation
followed but the club
reformed as the Doncaster
Dragons in the bottom tier
of the league in 1995/6.
Tattersfield had been sold
for housing and the club
moved to the Meadow
Court Greyhound Stadium
then later shared the Belle
Vue stadium with Doncaster
Rovers FC.
After St John Ellis became
coach in 1999 the club
began to prosper again.
Playing a tough, aggressive,
physical style, their ground
was referred to as “the
House of Pain” by Ellis an
ebullient larger than life
character who sadly died
all too soon on New Years’
Eve 1995.
With the legendary
Ellery Hanley at the helm,
Doncaster (with a young
Luke Gale at scrum half)
won the 2008 National
League 2 play off final
18-10 against Oldham at
Warrington’s Halliwell Jones
Stadium to earn promotion
to the game’s second
tier. Unfortunately Hanley
resigned shortly after citing
financial constraints and the
club were relegated back
to the third tier the next
season.
History repeated itself in
2012 when player coach
Paul Cooke led the Dons
to another play-off victory
in Warrington, 16-13 against
Barrow, as well as winning
the League Leaders Shield.
Now back in the third tier
and owned by the town’s
football club, Doncaster are
looking to newly-appointed
coach Richard Horne to
guide the club to better
times ahead - a far cry from
the days of “Another Bloody
Sunday”. The Documentary
is available on YouTube:
ALL GOLDS vs. DONCASTER
MATCH PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY JACK CONLON
On the back of last week’s memorable game against
Toronto, the All Golds face another tough test on
Sunday, as we come up against Doncaster in our
last game of the regular season.
While the result didn’t go in our favour, the Golden
Fern put up a real fight, even managing to come
away with two impressive tries. It was the defensive
performance, however, that really caught the eye, as
we held the Toronto attack up over the line on seven
occasions throughout the game.
There were plenty of positives to take away and
coach Lee Greenwood said that the game, as well
as the whole trip, was a huge success: “I’m massively
proud of every single player. To come out here was
always going to be tough but the guys dug in and
did themselves proud. We defended a fair few sets
on our own line and kept them out which I haven’t
seen many teams do.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

“We scored two tries and could have had a
couple more. It was disappointing to concede
that one late on but things like that can happen.
“We’re a young, inexperienced side so to come
here and face players who have played at the
very highest level will be a big learning curve for
our players. We had some really good spells in
the game and played right to the full time hooter
so as a coach you can’t ask for more.
“The players have embraced Canada and had a
great time. We had a trip to Niagara Falls and
saw a Blue Jays game. To play in front of such a
big crowd is great. Toronto are a very good side
and you’d expect them to be up at the top end
of the Championship next season.
“We suffered plenty of injuries during the game
which wasn’t great. We’ll be hoping some of
the players who came off might be available for
Doncaster but we’ll have to wait and see.”
The All Golds have yet to lose three consecutive
matches this season and Lee Greenwood has
plenty of selection options before he names his
19-man squad for the game.
Harry Kidd, Brad Kislingbury and Ben Stead are
still unavailable despite finishing their World Cup
duties with England Students on Friday. There’s
still no certainty surrounding Alex Gaskell’s ankle
injury sustained against Toronto, but Courtney
Davies and Chris Barlow could be back in
contention after missing out last week due to
concussion and a leg injury respectively. Brad
Hargreaves and Kadeem Williams could also
feature after missing the trip to Canada due to
work commitments.
The Dons come into the game on the back of
convincing wins over South Wales and Oxford in
the past two weeks, with their 70-12 thrashing of
the Ironmen being their second biggest
win of the season. There’s no place in Richard
Horne’s squad for former All Gold Jason
Muranka, while they are also without Tom Carr,
Jason Tali, Jordan Howden, Russ Spiers and Zac
Braham.
Doncaster squad: Aaron Jones-Bishop, Liam
Welham, Sam Doherty, Jordie Hedges, Mark
Castle, Kyle Kesik, Iafeta Palea’aesina, Peter
Green, Charlie Martin, Connor Scott, Jack Miller,
Ryan Wright, Mike Kelly, Kieran Cross, Louis
Sheriff, Jamie Thackray, Reece Dean, Makali Aizue,
TODAY’S OPPONENTS
DONCASTER RLFC
WRITTEN BY JACK CONLON
12
FORM
Richard Horne will be looking for his third
win since he took over as head coach last
month. The Dons come into the game on the
back of convincing wins over South Wales
and Oxford in the past two weeks, with their
70-12 thrashing of the Ironmen being their
second biggest win of the season. Not too
long ago they also managed to grab an
impressive draw against Barrow, becoming
only the second team, after Toronto, not to
be defeated by the Cumbrian outfit. Recent
losses to Whitehaven and Newcastle are the
only worries for Doncaster, but they seem
to have shrugged those poor performances
off and will come to the Prince of Wales in
confident mood.
BACKS
Doncaster have an explosive backline, with
a good mix of pace, power and experience.
Papua New Guinea centre Jason Tali is their
biggest threat out wide, with his stocky
build and burst of speed regularly troubling
defences. Outside him is experienced
three-quarter Richie Barnett who is a very
competent finisher, as is Sam Doherty on
the opposite flank.
There’s plenty of depth in the halves, with
Jack Miller forming good combinations
with former South Sydney Rabbitoh, Jordie
Hedges, and the recently-signed Reece
Dean. Dean can also fill-in at fullback, but
Tom Carr and former Hull KR junior Louis
Sheriff are much more established in
that position. The club also have a dualregistration
agreement with Hull FC which
could see Super League player Jack Logan
line up in the centres.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
FORWARDS
Doncaster have one of the biggest forwards
packs in League 1. Iafeta Palea’aesina and Zac
Braham are the heaviest hitters and will be
regularly rotated to ensure the Dons always
have a big impact going forward. This system
was very effective when we faced them in the
Challenge Cup in March. Just as effective on
that day was hooker Kieran Cross, who scored
four tries, but it’s likely he’ll miss out if club
captain Kyle Kesik is selected.
Elsewhere up front, Richard Horne has a very
versatile back row at his disposal, with Charlie
Martin, and former All Golds Brad England
and Jason Muranka all capable of playing
in the middle or in a wider role. Seasoned
campaigners Jamie Thackray and Makali
Aizue inject experience into the side, while the
dual registration deal with Hull again bears
fruit in the shape of young second rower Jack
Downs.
STAR MAN
ONE TO WATCH
Scrum-half Jack Miller only joined in October,
but has already made a big impact at the
Keepmoat. The Huddersfield Giants Academy
graduate arrived with plenty of pedigree,
after two stellar seasons with Queanbeyan
Kangaroos in the Canberra Raiders Cup in
Australia. He even won the Les McIntyre Medal
in 2015, which is awarded to the competition’s
player of the year.
His game time at Huddersfield was limited,
with the likes of Danny Brough, Luke Robinson
and former Don Kyle Wood never allowing
him a first team opportunity. He made just the
one senior appearance, kicking a conversion in
the 58-6 loss to Bradford at Odsal when coach
Paul Anderson rested most of his first team for
the Challenge Cup final the following week.
His organisation skills are the main strength in
his game, with the rest of the team playing off
the back of him. His kicking game is also really
strong, while he also possesses great technical
ability. The All Golds defence will need to close
him down early to stop him dictating the
Doncaster attack.
Despite being only 24-years-of-age, Charlie
Martin has already experienced Rugby League
at all three levels in Britain. A powerful back rower,
Martin started out at Castleford Tigers, making six
senior appearances before moving on to Batley in
2014. After a successful season at the Bulldogs, he
tried his hand in the other code with Huddersfield
RU but soon switched back to have spells with
Hunslet and Keighley before joining Doncaster for
2017.
While he possesses great size and strength, it’s his
deceptive speed and agility that make him a really
rounded player. He can hit good lines at pace and
compete with the big men in the middle, while
also causing problems running out wide with his
quick direction changes. His defence is solid as
well and he hits hard, so it’s really a wonder why he
isn’t playing at a higher level.
OXFORD
BAGGED
ALL GOLDS 38-10 OXFORD
SUNDAY 25 JUNE 2017
PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
After their big win against Hemel Stags, the
All Golds approached their game with Oxford
with confidence but after an hour’s slightly
uninspiring play, the sides were locked at 10-10.
Not for the first time Steve Parry inspired his
side with a vital contribution. Just minutes after
Harvey Burnett had levelled the scores, his flat
pass sent Harrison Elliott crashing over under
the posts and from then on, the All Golds were
in charge.
Mo Agoro had first given the home side the
lead in the second minute scoring from a
Davies cross-kick but former All Golds Marcus
Brooker and Casey Canterbury had crossed
for undonverted tries to edge the visitors in
front.
Lewis Reece had marked his 50th All Golds
game with a spell in the sin-bin but Oxford
failed to take advantage and on his return,
the All Golds captain burrowed over for a try,
Courtney Davies goalling for a 10-8 lead at the
break.
Once Elliott’s score had broken Oxford’s
resistance, the All Golds made hay against a
tiring side that had used their bench and had
only 14 or 15 fit men available. Parry scored
again before Chris Barlow trotted over in the
corner and James Walter marked his 50th All
Golds appearance with a touchdown.
Billy Brickhill finished the scoring with a superb
team try created by powerful forward surges
and slick hands.
It was all a bit reminiscent of the Keighley
game way back at the start of the season and
another all-too-rare glimpse of what the team
is capable of.
Three Barrow tries in the opening ten minutes
and two in the last ten gave the scoreline a
lopsided look but the promotion-chasing
Raiders were always in control.
Head coach Lee Greenwood lamented the flat
performance by his side on their fourth trip to
Cumbria this season: “Credit to Barrow they
were very good. In spells we looked dangerous
but we came up with too many errors in
possession,” he said.
“Its hard enough coming up here but we gifted
Barrow far too much field position and they
punished us.
“Conditions were awful so it didn’t make for
a great game. We were well beaten and will
work hard in training ahead of Toronto.”
Barrow rattled off over a point a minute in the
early stages with tries from Martin Aspinwall,
Dec Hulme and Shane Toal and a Lewis
Charnock goal with the All Golds’ only reply
coming from a Jack Mitchell try converted by
Courtney Davies.
A second try from Toal and a Charnock
penalty after the half time hooter made the
interval score 20-6.
A Nathan Mossop touchdown was the only
score of the half until the final ten minutes
when Hulme and Ryan Fieldhouse went over
to keep the Raiders on the heels of the top two.
With Courtney Davies left at home injured and
Chris Barlow failing a fitness test, coach Lee
Greenwood gave Errol Carter his All Golds
debut and Shaun Owens his first start after
the half back debuted against Barrow. He was
also able to select Alex Gaskell for the first time
since late March.
But the All Golds could hold their heads high
after a committed performance which saw
them battle hard for the full 80 minutes and
score two tries, the second from Lewis Reece
worthy of a place on any highlights reel after
Joe McClean shrugged off two tackles in a
40 metre surge before finding Luke Stephens
in support, Reece looming at the youngster’s
shoulder for the scoring pass.
The Wolfpack continued their seemingly
unstoppable march to the Championship with
their 14th straight league victory achieved
in the manner of many others by powerful
forwards and exciting backs finishing clinically.
Their 11 tries were shared between ten players
but they could perhaps have had half a dozen
more as time and again superb goalline
defence from the All Golds prevented the
Wolfpack from adding to their tally.
Steve Parry had scored for the All Golds in the
first half but there were injuries to Danny Fallon
and the luckless Gaskell to contend with as the
All Golds battled hard, making the Wolfpack
work for their points.
Despite the defeat it was a great day for the
club who fully embraced the adventure of
a game across the Atlantic and created a
positive impression both on and off the field.
FLAME OF THE WEST
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
18
Following the half time break at the end of
June, the West of England league got back
into action a fortnight ago with big wins for
the top two sides in both Pool 1 and Pool 2.
In Pool 1, Cheltenham Phoenix maintained
their 100% record with a 56-26 victory over
winless Swindon St George A while Forest
Bulldogs edged an exciting free-flowing
encounter with Gloucestershire Warriors 60-
44.
The following week, the Phoenix beat the
Warriors 58-26 to virtually assure themselves
of a top four place while Somerset Vikings
narrowly beat Swindon’s second string 34-32
in a thriller at Supermarine.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
Elsewhere, there was not good news as,
according to a Facebook posting, it looks
as though Bath & Wiltshire Romans have
withdrawn from the competition having been
unable to raise a side for their last four games.
Their last match was a narrow 30-26 defeat
by the Warriors last month and with injuries
coupled with the usual holidays and stag do’s
hitting player availability, they were finding it
increasingly difficult to put together a side.
There was also the small manner of a second,
breakaway, club emerging this year (Bath
RL) which has inevitably drained resources
despite hopes to the contrary at the start of
the season.
third, travel to second-placed Forest
Bulldogs knowing that a defeat could allow
Gloucestershire Warriors to sneak past them.
The Warriors take on Swindon St George A
at Cryptians looking for their first win at the
venue but will be wary of a side desperate for
their first win of the season.
The Romans intend to rejoin the competition
in 2018 and we all hope that the 2015
champions are able to come back stronger
to take their place in what is likely to be a
revamped competition.
Pool 2 is becoming increasingly competitive
with Swindon St George consolidating their
position at the top of the table with wins over
Southampton Spitfires (38-28) and Bath RL
(84-4).
In Pool 2, the leaders Swindon St George
travel to Oxford Cavaliers to face a side much
improved from the team that lost 36-28 at
Swindon in early June. St George were well in
control of that game before a late comeback
jangled the nerves somewhat.
Bristol Sonics host Portsmouth in what
should be a close contest while Bath RL
will look to put last weekend’s thrashing by
Swindon behind them against Southampton,
though it will mean a reversal of a 62-10
pounding they took in Hampshire last month.
Hot on their heels are Oxford Cavaliers and
Bristol Sonics who both made slow starts to
the season but are finding form at the right
time. The Sonics edged a tight midweek
encounter with Bath 38-34 before going
down 44-24 to the Cavaliers who then
trounced Portsmouth 56-24 away from
home.
This week’s fixtures see the focus on the
battle for third and fourth place in Pool 1
100 NOT OUT
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
20
In stepping onto the Craven Park pitch on
Saturday 1 July, Phil Cowburn became the first
All Golds player to reach 100 appearances for
the club.
When a 19-year-old Phil Cowburn headed to
the West Country to study at Hartpury College
along with his good friends Matt Bradley and
Callum Mulkeen, he could hardly have envisaged
being the first player to notch up a century of
appearances for a local professional side.
On reaching the unique milestone, he said: “It’s
been a long, hard journey, the first game back in
2013 seems ages ago. To be the first All Gold to
reach 100 appearances is a big honour for me.”
Although Phil’s club rugby was in the 15-a-side
game he was no stranger to rugby league having
played the game at school. He continued at
Hopwood Hall College - North West champion
college at the time - and for England Colleges
in the Under 18s European Cup in the Czech
Republic.
Deep in the heartland of rugby union, it seemed
unlikely that a rugby league career would
blossom but, after a chance meeting with
Steve Lee, then head coach at Gloucestershire
Warriors, Phil’s destiny changed.
Along with Matt and Callum, Phil was an integral
part of the Warriors side that lost just once in the
summer of 2011 winning the West of England
title and reaching the semi final of the national
Harry Jepson Trophy. Phil was a massive hit
with the Warriors, scoring eight tries in just four
matches for the side, including four on his debut
against Bristol Sonics.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

Sticking together, the three
friends all transferred to the
University of Gloucestershire
on rugby league scholarships
in 2011, playing for the BUCS
side for two years before all
three made their professional
debuts for the senior All Golds
side in their debut season as a
League 1 club.
Phil showed the toughness
and durability he is renowned
for by being an ever-present
in the BUCS side of 2012
that secured the national
championship and was
instrumental in their Challenge
Cup win over Rochdale
Mayfield, scoring twice in a 33-
14 win. It is no surprise to learn
that in his record-making run,
Phil has missed just 11 games
for the Golden Fern.
He has also amassed 41 tries,
including a hat-trick against
Coventry Bears in 2016, and
seven goals, earning himself a
reputation as being one of the
best finishers in the division.
Having literally kicked off
the All Golds’ rugby league
adventure in their first game
against Hemel Stags, Phil has
been happy to re-sign each
season and has played under
three coaches at the club in
Brad Hepi, Steve McCormack
and, present incumbent, Lee
Greenwood.
“The first game was quite a
shock to be honest, a massive
step up from university
rugby,” he said. “It probably
took us a season to get used
to the speed and intensity of
the professional game.
“As soon as we became
more experienced we started
winning more games. That
month in the summer of 2014
was fantastic, we beat York
and Hunslet, who were two
of the top teams in the league
then.”
Paying tribute, Lee
Greenwood said: “Phil has
been an excellent professional
during my time at the club. He
has played every position in
the backline and given his best
in each, no questions asked. It
is a great achievement for him
to become the first All Gold to
reach 100 appearances and
it is also fantastic for the club
that these personal milestones
are being reached on a regular
basis now.”
Now in his fifth season with
the club, Phil has played in
every position in the backs,
starting off at full back, but
prefers playing at centre and
he has grown from a relatively
inexperienced young player
into one of the senior
members of the squad who
can always be relied upon to
give nothing less than 100%.
Playing against Oldham in
each of the All Golds’ first three
seasons has been a highlight
for Phil as he supported the
Roughyeds from a young
age, was a ball boy there and
played in the same school
teams as prop forward
Michael Ward who has made
over 100 appearances for the
Oldham club. But there have
been other highlights as Phil
explains
“Obviously this season has
been great as well. We’ve
shown what we can do by
beating great teams like
Keighley and Workington (Phil
is much too modest to add
that he scored the winning
try against Workington). No
one gave us a chance in those
two games so to come away
with the win was incredible,
there’s no better feeling. I’ve
really enjoyed this season,
playing at centre has been
great, I’ve struck up a good
partnership with Mo Agoro
who is the leading try scorer
in the division. To be honest I’ll
play wherever I’m asked but I
do prefer centre.”
Almost a West Country native
now, Phil has the dubious
privilege of being a housemate
of second row forward Joe
McClean in Gloucester and
a near neighbour of recently
returned forward Richard
Jones; so what price Phil
being the first to reach 150 for
the Golden Fern?
“I’ve loved every minute of
my time at the All Golds,” Phil
said. “Of course there have
been a few heavy defeats
along the way but you tend
to remember the great wins
more than the losses.
“Rugby League is a brutal
game and playing alongside
your best mates makes it
easier.”
Four days in Toronto
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
put into words what greets you
when you walk around the corner
and see Niagara Falls for the first
time. The roar is the first thing you
notice as the water from the river
smashes down the falls. You stand
there completely transfixed on the
sheer volume of water that comes
spilling over the vertical drop. Back
home in Wales I always enjoyed
visiting Llanrhaeadr waterfall, after
visiting Niagara I’m not sure I’ll be
able to take the trickle of the Welsh
‘waterfall’ seriously after seeing the
legendary Niagara Falls!
22
Well what a weekend that was!
Niagara Falls, Toronto Blue Jays
v Houston Astros at the iconic
Rogers Centre, hours of fun in
downtown Toronto but best of all –
the Toronto Wolfpack v All Golds at
the Lamport stadium on Saturday
afternoon.
We departed Gatwick airport at
midday on Thursday afternoon.
The longest flight I’d been on
before this was a three hour jaunt
over to Malta so I was a little
concerned as to how I’d find the
long trek to Canada. I don’t enjoy
sitting in the same place for too
long so this eight hour journey was
going to be a tough one. My main
problem was my inability to fall
asleep. No matter how hard I tried
I couldn’t get off which meant the
final couple of hours of our journey
were’t too much fun. After what
seemed like an eternity we were
pulling up at Toronto airport. The All
Golds had arrived!
After our eight hour flight we
were collected by a bus at Toronto
airport. A representative from
the Wolfpack accompanied us
on the 45 minute journey to our
accommodation and handed us
bottles of water and bananas for
the journey. A small gesture but a
very welcome one.
We were based at the York
University campus, 13 miles from
the city centre. Our rooms were
spacious and the beds comfortable.
After a fantastic meal put on by
the Wolfpack we headed for bed.
Everyone would be rising early on
Friday morning for our final training
session before the big game.
The 90 minute training session
went well. We were all finished by
midday and had the rest of the
day to ourselves. Niagara Falls is
just two hours from Toronto so we
decided to rent a few vehicles and
get on the road. My map reading
skills aren’t the best and for some
inexplicable reason I was handed
the responsibility of sitting in the
passenger seat and guiding our
driver to the Falls. All was going
well for about 30 seconds until I
told him to turn off the motorway
and drive in the wrong direction.
After that initial mishap we made
smooth progress and parked up
right next to the Falls. It’s hard to
On the way back we noticed that
the Blue Jays – Toronto’s baseball
team – were playing at the Rogers
Centre. We queued for tickets and
noticed that the home town team
were already 9-0 down! With the
game as good as over we were
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

told by some upset Blue Jays fans
to save our money and not bother
buying tickets but we’d come this
far, we weren’t about to back down
now. The Rogers Centre is a huge
stadium and, like every other sport
in the city, well supported by the
Toronto natives. Baseball is the
polar opposite to rugby league –
slow and far less intense – but I can
see the appeal. It’s nice to be able
to just sit there and watch with a
beer in hand.
Saturday was game day – the day
we’d been looking forward to for
months. Toronto Wolfpack are a
full-time team with players who
have played at the very top of the
rugby league tree. Our team was
packed full of youngsters who train
twice a week. We were up against
it but I was confident the players
would do themselves proud. We
were missing a good six or seven
players with injuries or who were
playing for England at the student
World Cup in Australia. The players
who came in were good enough
though so we wouldn’t be using
any excuses.
In the end we were well beaten 62-
10 but every single All Golds player
did themselves proud. A result like
that is to be expected when a fulltime
side of experienced Super
League and NRL players face off
against a team that has only been
going four seasons. Our head
coach was more than satisfied with
the effort and desire his players
showed. Unfortunately the effort
came at a cost with a number of
players injured during the bruising
encounter. Alex Gaskell, who was
playing for the first time since his
leg injury in March, left the field on
crutches. Phil Cowburn suffered an
injury to his knee, our captain Steve
Parry’s game was also cut short
after his ankle gave way in the
tackle. Danny Fallon had his arm
in a sling and Luke Stephens, who
did so well to set up Lewis Reece
for our final try, had concussion.
Rugby league is a brutal sport.
The scenes after the full-time
hooter will stay with me for a
long time. It’s worth noting that
in League 1 the post match
etiquette is – shake hands with
the opposition, walk back to the
changing rooms, get changed,
have a plate full of pasta then pile
onto the bus home. Toronto do
things a little differently. The seven
thousand spectators all vacate
their seats and head to the pitch
side to shake hands and take
selfies with the players. The fans
really appreciate the effort and the
players, having run their blood to
water in 25 degree heat, are all too
happy to pose for photographs.
The most pleasing thing, from a
rugby league perspective, was the
number of children and women
in attendance. Children are the
future of our sport and you have to
applaud the Wolfpack for getting
so many youngsters through the
gate.
The fun doesn’t stop there
though. At the end of the pitch
the Wolfpack have installed beer
tents. What better way for players
and fans to mingle after the game
than over a couple of cold beers
and a hotdog? On Saturday I
was approached by countless
Wolfpack fans who wanted to buy
me a beer, I think they thought
I was a player! Canadians have
a reputation of being friendly
and polite but the guys at the
Lamport Stadium really do go
out of their way to make you feel
welcome. I’ve been to many of
the biggest sporting events in the
world – Wimbledon, the Open
Championship, Premier League
football and Test Match cricket
and I’ve never felt more welcome
than I was on Saturday evening in
Toronto. I’d go back in an instant if
travel wasn’t such an issue.
After the game the players and
staff headed into town for a few
well earned beers. On Sunday
morning we ventured back to the
city centre and enjoyed a fine meal
at the harbour. Then the dread
started to set in – our Canadian
adventure was almost over. We
made our way back to camp and
packed our suitcases ready for the
flight home.
Rugby league is a fantastic sport
and it’s heartwarming to the
people who care about its future
to see the Canadians have taken
to it so quickly. To get over 7000
people to watch what is a brand
new sport is nothing short of
incredible and everyone at the
Wolfpack should be very proud
what they’ve achieved in such a
short space of time.
I’d like to finish by saying thank you
to the fans who came to the game.
You made us feel so welcome
and all the players and staff were
blown away by your generosity
and warmth. Rugby league is the
greatest game of them all, you’re
in for quite a journey with the
Wolfpack. I hope our paths cross
again one day.
