FLAME OF THE WEST
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
18
Following the half time break at the end of
June, the West of England league got back
into action a fortnight ago with big wins for
the top two sides in both Pool 1 and Pool 2.
In Pool 1, Cheltenham Phoenix maintained
their 100% record with a 56-26 victory over
winless Swindon St George A while Forest
Bulldogs edged an exciting free-flowing
encounter with Gloucestershire Warriors 60-
44.
The following week, the Phoenix beat the
Warriors 58-26 to virtually assure themselves
of a top four place while Somerset Vikings
narrowly beat Swindon’s second string 34-32
in a thriller at Supermarine.
Elsewhere, there was not good news as,
according to a Facebook posting, it looks
as though Bath & Wiltshire Romans have
withdrawn from the competition having been
unable to raise a side for their last four games.
Their last match was a narrow 30-26 defeat
by the Warriors last month and with injuries
coupled with the usual holidays and stag do’s
hitting player availability, they were finding it
increasingly difficult to put together a side.
There was also the small manner of a second,
breakaway, club emerging this year (Bath
RL) which has inevitably drained resources
despite hopes to the contrary at the start of
the season.
