MEET Karli Lang
O
range City is filled to the brim
with people that we want to know
better.
Karli Lang is no exception.
The senior at MOC-Floyd Valley High
School in Orange City entered the ranks of
royalty last fall when she was crowned the
2017 Tulip Festival queen.
Lang, an Orange City native, will rule over
her hometown’s 77th annual community
celebration, which is set for May 18-20 in the
Sioux County seat of about 6,200, and she
couldn’t be more excited.

FAMILY: Parents, Chris and Sherry Lang; two
siblings: Kelsey, 19, and Colin, 13
FAVORITE PART OF THE TITLE? The best part of
being the Tulip Festival queen is the endless fun
with the other girls on the Tulip Court and all
the other amazing people that we get to work
with. It is an amazing opportunity to get to
represent a wonderful town and give back to
this community that I have been blessed to grow
up in.
MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR TITLE? It
can be challenging at times to juggle school,
activities, jobs, college prep and responsibilities
as Tulip Queen on top of everything else, but
every moment is worth it. One funny challenge
I’ve encountered is that I sometimes get asked
how to say words in Dutch, to which I laugh and
admit I know absolutely no Dutch. Hopefully I
can learn a little in the upcoming months.
FAVORITE BOOK? “The Selection” series by Kiera
Cass
HOBBIES? I enjoy any activity outside — bike rides,
walks with my dog, going sledding and skiing and
hiking. I also love having coffee with friends, family
game nights, babysitting, road trips and traveling
to new places.
CHURCH AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS YOU
BELONG TO? New Hope Evangelical Free
Church in Orange City, where I’m an active
part of the high school youth group and teach
kindergarten and first-grade Kidz Klub. At MOC-
Floyd Valley High School, I’m involved in cross
country, dance team, student council, National
Honor Society, large group speech and marching
band.
FAVORITE MOVIE? “Me Before You”
FAVORITE MUSIC GENRES? Some artists I’ve been
listening to a lot lately are Ben Rector, Tori Kelly,
Anthem Lights, Jon Bellion and Ed Sheeran. My
favorite worship artists include Rend Collective,
Jesus Culture and Hillsong.
FAVORITE FOOD? My mom’s chicken enchiladas.
FAVORITE VACATION? Relaxing on a beach in the
Florida sun with my family.
FAVORITE QUOTE? “One life on this earth is all that
we get, whether it is enough or not enough. And
the obvious conclusion would seem to be that
at the very least, we are fools if we do not live it
as fully and bravely and beautifully as we can.” —

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING IN
ORANGE CITY? I love the people of Orange City
and the simple joys of life in a small Christian
community. I love that I know so many people
here and that so many are friendly, caring, always
willing to help others out and be role models I
look up to.
