MINIATUREWORLD89 A DESIGNER’S STORY: Eng Siak Loy’s Story (Veteran designer and winner of the President’s Designer Award in 2007 (Designer of the Year), Mr Eng Siak Loy, shares his invaluable insights and thoughts on stamp designing) Initially working as a graphics designer at the then Television Singapura, it was an opportune moment when a member of the Stamp Advisory Committee approached me to design the “150th Anniversary of Founding of Singapore” stamps in 1969, my artistic life with stamps intertwined. I feel stamp designing is about subject research since the theme is determined, conceptualisation, choice of style – whether will it be using airbrush, watercolour or line drawing etc – the consideration of rendering the stamps being in a “block of 4”, “se-tenant” etc, keeping in touch with stamps and reading up design-related materials. Although with the current advanced technology and the availability of computer & softwares that can greatly assist in design works, very much preferred by younger designers, I rather do it the traditional stroke-bystroke method as it can bring out the natural feel of the designs, especially for nature theme issues. I had my arts training at the Singapore Academy of Art in 1960, and had since won several awards in both the arts scene and in the stamp world, e.g. Gold Medal award in the China Society Art Competition, UNESCO NOMA Concourse prize for the illustration of a children’s picture book, the 2002 Singapore Post Care-for-Nature Heritage Trees stamp series was awarded “Asia’s Most Beautiful Stamps” and the “2nd Most Beautiful Stamp in the World” in 2003 by Paris-based Timbropresse Group, a leader of the Frenchspeaking philatelic press with Timbres Magazine etc. One of the most notable and memorable achievement will be my winning of the President’s Designer Award 2007 (Designer of the year), of which this is a country’s recognition for the art works that I’ve done through the years. I still remember in it’s citation, the jury noted that “in an age where we are inundated with digital design, it is very inspiring to see that the Art and Craft tradition is still alive and thriving in Singapore, through the versatile public design works of this Grand Master”. Another was in 1999, I had the honour of being the first Singaporean in the nation’s history to design the entire Portrait Series of currency notes launched by the Board of Commissioners of Currency (Singapore). The Portrait Series is the fourth series of currency notes that for the first time featured a portrait as the central theme. These experiences truly inspired me to ensure and maintain the standards of my art works that anyone will able to see. For stamps designing, some stamp issues for example include the 600th Anniversary of Admiral Zheng He’s Voyages, Chek Jawa Nature Series, Wetland Wildlife Series and Singapore Tropical Freshwater Fish Series. To date, if I didn’t remember wrongly, I should have designed at least 56 sets of Singapore stamps and 18 sets of commemorative coins. Coming back to the stamp issue, when the Gardens by the Bay was conceptualized, once again, I had the opportunity to design this set of stamps as at the same time, I was working closely with the Gardens by the Bay committee for installation works. Featuring the remarkable giant super trees, the flower dome, as well as some unique species of both flora and fauna, this set of stamps truly reflect the Gardens like how it will be, all the conceptualization of the designs were through the understanding of what the gardens will be when opened. If I can offer some words of advice to younger and new stamp designers, it will be to read and observe more of the happenings around us. It will enhance the understanding of current affairs, which will translate to the designs. Also, with the foundation of fine arts, learning graphics design can greatly assist in bringing the designs to another different level.
PHILATELIC EVENT: Indonesia 2012 - World Stamp Championship and Exhibition 2012 World Stamp Championship and Exhibition 2012 will be held in Indonesia from 18 – 24 June at the Jakarta Convention Centre. The theme for this exhibition is “Bridging the World of Peace Through Stamps”. This exhibition is being jointly organised by Indonesian Philatelists Association and PT Pos Indonesia. It is under the patronage of Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (F.I.P) and the auspices of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (F.I.A.P.). Ministry of Communication and Information Technology as well as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia also fully supports this exhibition.
