SOJOURN//SPRING17 ANCIENT TOWN OF CHINA TRAVEL BACK IN TIME IN FENGHUANG COUNTY OF HUNAN PROVINCE Surrounded by a lush green forest imbued with a morning fog, the town of Fenghuang looks as if it's trapped in a time capsule. The town still manages to preserve its stunning architecture with an impressive amount of detail. Whether it is the shape of the roofs, the imposing doors and courtyard gates or the lattices work on windows and wooden window cover, everything remained intact after 300 years.The typical building in Fenghuang is called Diaojiaolou which is a unique wooden houses built along the river bank. When seeing from a distance, the houses look like hanging on the river. This design is to protect the house from the flooding situation in Tuojiang River in the old time. Fenghuang Ancient Town can be divided into two parts. One is the old town while the other one is new town. The old one leans against hills and faces the crystal-clear Tuojiang River flowing through the city, and it is the main tourist area in the county.
