Valley Cottages. We have designed an e-magazine which will hopefully
keep all our guests up to date with what’s going on at Breamish Valley
Cottages and what to look out for in Northumberland during the time of
your stay. Of course there is so much to see and do in Northumberland so
we have chosen some of our favourite activities, walks and sights to visit.
So please enjoy our first instalment and we hope it helps you enjoy
your stay here.

What’s new at Breamish Valley Cottages
As I am sure you are all now aware, we have a new website, which we hope you find
as fresh and striking as we do. Along with our new website, we have now added an
online store, offering an exciting and varied wine list for you to buy and have ready
in your cottage ready for your arrival; it’s even easier than supermarket shopping. In
our process of continued improvement, Night Fold and Souterpot have been given
new sofas and Night Fold has a new colour scheme. New Super King beds have been
put into Hemmel House, Night Fold and Coally Law to give you that extra bit of luxury for
your break away. There are some exciting projects in the pipeline here at Breamish Valley
Cottages, keep following our Facebook Page and Instagram Page to keep up to date with
everything…. Watch this space.
Quidditch skills!
2. Alnwick Castle,
Garden
One of the largest inhabited castles
in Europe and proudly know as ‘the
Windsor of the North’ Alnwick Castle
is a real treat for adults and children
alike. The adults can tour the Castle,
learn about the Percy Family and their
700 year history. For the kids, why
not try a spot of broomstick training
or new for 2017 join Harry Hotspur
and the Dragon Catcher and enter
the Dragons Lair to face the terrifying
Dragon.
One of the largest second hand bookshops in Britain, Barter Books
is housed within the old railway station which was closed in 1968.
Still maintaining many of the original features, this building truly
is a sight to behold for such a small market town. The grandeur
of the building was deemed necessary due to the presence
of the Dukes of Northumberland situated at Alnwick Castle.
Now however it holds a large collection of second hand books and
an inviting café, so whether the kids want to find their next book
to read, or you fancy relaxing in front of the fire with a good read,
there really is something for everybody in this little gem of a building.
1. Cheviot Hills
Northumberland was recently named
by the Campaign for Rural England as
the country’s most tranquil spot and if
you spend any time here you’ll begin
to realise why. With the Cheviot Hills
right on our doorstep we can offer
some of the most exciting walking
country around. Why not take a look
at our top 10 walks on our website;
‘The Mountain Goat’ himself has
picked out 10 great walks in the local
hills varying from a gentle wander
to hikes not for the faint hearted.
The Garden is an inspiring landscape
with beautiful gardens, unique
features, including a Treehouse,
Poison Garden and magnificent
architecture, all brought to life
with water. Dining is available
in the Treehouse for an extra
special experience.
3. Cragside -
5. Ford & Etal – Heatherslaw Railway
Ford & Etal, home to the Joicey family for over 100 years, this
large rural Northumberland estate offers a host of activities
and sights to visit. For us however it is the 15” gauge steam
railway running from Heatherslaw to Etal Village, with a return
journey time of 50 minutes, this is a great attraction for the
little ones.
Discover the first house
in the world to be lit by
hydro-electricity. It is
crammed full of ingenious
gadgets with most of them
still working. The gardens
are incredible. One of the
largest rock gardens in Europe
leads down to the Iron Bridge, which
in turn leads to the formal garden.
Children will love the adventure play
area and exploring Nelly’s Labyrinth, a
network of paths and tunnels cut out
of a vast area of rhododendron forest.
6. Holy Island – Lindisfarne
Skim over the sands and causeway to Holy Island and
prepare to enter another world. Lying just a few miles
of the Northumberland coast, Holy Island as seen on
Robson Green’s Tales from Northumberland is cut off
twice-daily from the rest of the world by fast-moving
tides. Both an island and a picturesque village, Holy
Island carries a wealth of history within its tidal walls.
See one of the region’s most revered treasures
Lindisfarne Priory. The epicentre of Christianity
in Anglo Saxon times, Lindisfarne Priory was
once the home of St Oswald. This serene
setting was the birthplace of the Lindisfarne
Gospels, one of the world’s most precious books.
7. Bamburgh Castle &
Beach
Bamburgh Castle, has to be one of
the most breathtaking views along the
Northumberland coastline, defending
its position 150 ft above the coastline
it dominates the horizon in a majestic
manner.
Why not visit the still inhabited castle
and learn of its history. Or for those
who like a stroll along the beach, take
the short walk down from the castle and
enjoy the beautiful Northumberland
coastline in all its glory.
9. Kielder Observatory
Northumberland International Dark
Sky Park was unveiled in December
2013. At 572 square miles it is also
Europe’s largest area of protected
night sky. Due to its pristine skies it
was awarded gold tier designation by
the international Dark Sky Association,
making it officially the best place in
England for people to go to enjoy the
heavens.
What better place to view the dark
skies than at Kielder Observatory,
a public astronomical observatory
which is second to none.
8. Farne Islands -
National Trust
10. Hadrians Wall
Why not take a boat trip to the Farne
Islands, sailing from Seahouses you can
visit some incredible wildlife. Boasting
one of the most exciting seabird
colonies in England with unrivalled
views of 23 species, including around
37,000 pairs of puffin.
The Islands are also home to a large
grey seal colony with more than 1,000
pups born every autumn.
www.nationaltrust.org.uk/
farne-islands
Northumberland is home to the
majority of the remaining sections of
Hadrians Wall and five of the eight
excavated forts, including the iconic
fort of Housesteads and Vindolanda.
The county is also home to many
miles of tracks along unbroken parts
of the wall that dip and swerve over
high ground.
These paths often provide spectacular
views over a landscape largely
unchanged since the days of the
Roman legions.
Walking in
Northumberland
Northumberland has an abundance of
picturesque, scenic and challenging walks,
and for us, we are lucky that many of these
walks are right on our doorstep. Sitting at the
mouth of the Breamish Valley, we are in an
ideal spot to venture up into the hills for some
exploring and challenging walking.
Our very own in house walking enthusiast
Pete Snr, nicknamed the ‘Mountain Goat’ due
to his exploits into the world of ultra-marathon
running in the fells, has compiled a short list
of some of his favourite walks in the Cheviots,
don’t worry there is something in there for
everybody. We have OS maps available to
buy on our website which can be ready for
you when you arrive.
These walks will be located on our website
under our ‘Information’ section, we hope that
you will be able to enjoy one or more of them
whilst staying at Breamish Valley Cottages.
