2. Alnwick Castle,
Garden
One of the largest inhabited castles
in Europe and proudly know as ‘the
Windsor of the North’ Alnwick Castle
is a real treat for adults and children
alike. The adults can tour the Castle,
learn about the Percy Family and their
700 year history. For the kids, why
not try a spot of broomstick training
or new for 2017 join Harry Hotspur
and the Dragon Catcher and enter
the Dragons Lair to face the terrifying
Dragon.
One of the largest second hand bookshops in Britain, Barter Books
is housed within the old railway station which was closed in 1968.
Still maintaining many of the original features, this building truly
is a sight to behold for such a small market town. The grandeur
of the building was deemed necessary due to the presence
of the Dukes of Northumberland situated at Alnwick Castle.
Now however it holds a large collection of second hand books and
an inviting café, so whether the kids want to find their next book
to read, or you fancy relaxing in front of the fire with a good read,
there really is something for everybody in this little gem of a building.
1. Cheviot Hills
Northumberland was recently named
by the Campaign for Rural England as
the country’s most tranquil spot and if
you spend any time here you’ll begin
to realise why. With the Cheviot Hills
right on our doorstep we can offer
some of the most exciting walking
country around. Why not take a look
at our top 10 walks on our website;
‘The Mountain Goat’ himself has
picked out 10 great walks in the local
hills varying from a gentle wander
to hikes not for the faint hearted.
The Garden is an inspiring landscape
with beautiful gardens, unique
features, including a Treehouse,
Poison Garden and magnificent
architecture, all brought to life
with water. Dining is available
in the Treehouse for an extra
5. Ford & Etal – Heatherslaw Railway
Ford & Etal, home to the Joicey family for over 100 years, this
large rural Northumberland estate offers a host of activities
and sights to visit. For us however it is the 15” gauge steam
railway running from Heatherslaw to Etal Village, with a return
journey time of 50 minutes, this is a great attraction for the
little ones.
Discover the first house
in the world to be lit by
hydro-electricity. It is
crammed full of ingenious
gadgets with most of them
still working. The gardens
are incredible. One of the
largest rock gardens in Europe
leads down to the Iron Bridge, which
in turn leads to the formal garden.
Children will love the adventure play
area and exploring Nelly’s Labyrinth, a
network of paths and tunnels cut out
of a vast area of rhododendron forest.
6. Holy Island – Lindisfarne
Skim over the sands and causeway to Holy Island and
prepare to enter another world. Lying just a few miles
of the Northumberland coast, Holy Island as seen on
Robson Green’s Tales from Northumberland is cut off
twice-daily from the rest of the world by fast-moving
tides. Both an island and a picturesque village, Holy
Island carries a wealth of history within its tidal walls.
See one of the region’s most revered treasures
Lindisfarne Priory. The epicentre of Christianity
in Anglo Saxon times, Lindisfarne Priory was
once the home of St Oswald. This serene
setting was the birthplace of the Lindisfarne
Gospels, one of the world’s most precious books.
