He placed a call to his father, Luis Mendoza Sr., and told him he thought he found the right place to open the restaurant they dreamed of. “We were looking for the perfect location, but we couldn’t find it,” the elder Mendoza recalled. “… And then my son was driving and saw this plaza and called me and told me. … There’s not many authentic Mexican restaurants around here, and I said this could be the place.” On the day of its opening May 9 in Homer Glen, Frontera Sur Mexican Restaurant gradually saw customers continue to trickle in, showing an early return on the investment and decision of the father and son. What began as several customers grew into more and more entering the door, curious to try out the tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas and much more. Village officials gathered to hold a ribbon cutting with the Mendozas, and the chance at a photo op with the ribbon in front of the counter had to be done quickly, given the consistent stream of patrons. “First, we have to become the best and be consistent and loyal to our community in order for us to continue to grow along with the community,” Village of Homer Glen officials gather with Frontera Sur Mexican Restaurant owner Luis Mendoza Sr. (middle, with scissors) for a ribbon cutting at the business May 9 in Homer Glen. To do so, Frontera Sur will use fresh ingredients to make dishes from scratch on a daily basis, according to the owners, with Mendoza Sr. serving as executive chef and Mendoza Jr. as chef. Both use their years of experience in the restaurant industry — along with family recipes handed down for generations — to make the most of the menu. “We have something authentic,” Mendoza Sr. said. “Hopefully, people will like it.” An example of an authentic dish not seen at every Mexican restaurant in the area is the Guachinango a la Veracruzana ($14.95), a red snapper a la Veracruzana served with tomato sauce, capers, olives and peppers. The fish, caught in the wild in Mexico, is the centerpiece of a dish that shows influences from of those who settled in Veracruz from Spain, Mendoza Sr. said. “Every single place in Mexico is different,” Mendoza Sr. said, noting the restaurant tries to show those differences over the course of its selections. Frontera Sur also has breakfast menu items served all day that each come with three scrambled eggs, rice, beans and four tortillas. If the foot traffic the business saw on its first day is any indication, it could quickly become a local staple for Mexican fare, something its owners hope is the case. “Most of our family members have a culinary background,” Mendoza Jr. said. The restaurant also has his mother, wife, sister and brother-in-law working there, making for a true family venture. “We just try to keep it traditional, authentic.” Public notices—important information about what is happening in our government— would become a thing of the past in Illinois under Senate Bill 2032. So would important transparency about the decisions being made that impact us and how our money is being spent. Instead of requiring governmental entities large and small to print these notices in newspapers, they could post them solely online on their own website— and there are more than 750 statewide. Such a move would affect many people, including the elderly, minorities and those in rural areas. In fact, AARP has opposed similar legislation nationwide. Only one state has tried this approach and it repealed the decision after two years because it was a failure. Illinois should be pushing more transparency, not giving the government another way to hide our business. LET LT. GOV.
