100 Word Stories
My friend and I raced on our bikes. As we neared the area where my sister and her friends
played, w e heard screams of pain. My sister was being walked over to our house as blood
dripped from her head. I darted inside and awoke my napping dad. We rushed to the hospital. I
held her bleeding head all the way there. She was emitted. My mother arrived. The story of what
happened was shared once more. After hours of examination, she received stitches, with a
neon bandage atop. In the late hours of the night we returned home.
During the spring break of 2014, we took a trip to Europe. We drove from Kansas City to
Chicago. From Chicago we took a plane to Istanbul, Turkey. We arrived at the airport and then
eventually made our way out to the square. From there we took a taxi to our hotel. It was much
better than we thought. We made our way, exhausted, to our suite. There we settled down. Our
view from our window was spectacular. That experience was one-of-a-kind.
How to Lose Weight The Right Way
Losing weight can be difficult, many diets and exercises don't work. Fad diets, such as
HCG diet, Military Diet, cleansing, and detox diets, don’t usually work. These types of diets try to
replace exercise with eating less, which leads your body to think that you’re starving. Your body
will then hold onto every calorie it can, causing you to gain weight. When you try a fad diet,
your body loses water instead of fat. The weight you lose on a fad diet, or seem to lose anyway,
is water weight. Fad diets lead to dehydration, which mixed with hunger, lead to fatigue. This
makes you tired, and not in the mood to exercise. When you stop exercising, your body can’t
build muscles, this will lead to muscle loss. Not only will you lose strength, it will slow your
metabolism. A slower metabolism, due to muscle loss, means you lose weight slower. A major
problem with fad diets is that they cut out a specific food group, such as carbohydrates or fats.
Cutting a certain food group out of what you consume is not healthy. To maintain good health,
your body needs foods from all food groups, including some fats and oils. So how can you lose
weight? Keeping a balanced diet, eating a healthy amount of protein, carbs, fruits, vegetables,
and dairy everyday. Exercise daily; take a walk, jog, go to the
gym, swim, play sports, do something active every day for at
least an hour. Get enough sleep, a good sleeping pattern is
crucial for remaining healthy. And most of all, don’t follow fad
Who Knew? Facts You Probably Didn’t Know
What would bounce higher, a glass ball or a rubber one?
Did you know that a ball made of glass will bounce higher than a ball made of rubber?
Seems impossible, but it’s true! When a rubber ball hits a surface, it deforms a little. This makes
it lose energy. Unlike the rubber ball, a glass ball does not squish against the surface before
jumping up. This retains energy for it to bounce higher. A way to test how well it will bounce
back up is to test how it rings. When you strike a marble, you can hear a ringing sound, same
for a bell, or a bouncy ball. For example, if one bell is made of rubber and another is made of
glass, which one do you think will ring louder? The glass one will definitely ring louder, also
meaning that it will bouncer higher. If you compare the sound of a glass bell to a steel bell, you
will find that the steel bell has more sound. A steel ball will bounce higher than a ball made of
glass. You can test it for yourself, get a rubber ball, a glass ball, and a steel ball. Drop from a
height of a few centimeters on a hard surface. You will find that the glass ball will bounce higher
than the rubber ball, and the steel ball will bounce higher than the glass ball.
Need to memorize vocab words?
Did you know that after learning new information, taking a nap can help your retain the
new information you learned? Many studies prove this fact. A study of preschoolers that took a
nap after learning new verbs proved that they knew them better after 24 hours compared to
preschoolers that didn’t take nap.According a harvard study in 2010, volunteers were taught
how to navigate a maze. During a break, select few were allowed to take a 90 minute nap.
Those who were allowed to sleep, did overall better than those who did not. A german study
proved that a nap of six minutes helped volunteers memorize a list of 30 words. Different length
naps help you with different things, although all naps allow for information to be processed.
Why Are We Able To See Magenta?
Did you know that the color magenta is not visible in the color spectrum? Magenta does
not have wavelength of light. Then why are we able to see magenta? Magenta is the
complementary color to green. Every color has a complementary color. When we stare at a
green light for a long period of time then look away we will see magenta.
Too Much Chocolate Cake is the perfect recipe for any chocolate lover! It’s good for any
occasion, whether it’s a birthday or a BBQ, it will be a big hit! It’s my favorite because of it’s
chocolaty taste, it’s not too bitter, nor is it too sweet. This recipe is fairly easy to make,
considering it’s a recipe for the cake being made from scratch.
Movie Review
Movie: Top Gun
Released: 1989
Top Gun is an extraordinary film, and is definitely worth watching. It
is exciting, filled with action, has enough comedy, with just the right
amount of love story.Maverick, played by Tom Cruise is a cocky
pilot, who attempts to go to Top Gun, the best of the best. He is
quite egotistical, and a bit of a go-getter. This film portrays emotions
such as love, sadness, and gives you a small rush of adrenaline
with the roaring planes throughout the movie. It has a bit of
everything, comedy, action, romance, and all in good moderation. I
recommend this movie, it never seems to get old. This film is a
classic, that can be re-watched over and over again. It came out in 1986, yet it still holds
the ability to entertain. Top Gun gets my rating of 5 stars, it may be one of my favorite
movies now!
Well that’s odd!
● Ants have graveyards- they carry dead ants to a place away from the colony. They
don’t have funerals, like crows, but they do this for the better of the colony. When an ant
dies it releases a chemical called oleic acid. This gives off a smell alerting the other ants
that it’s dead. As an instinct, the ants then carry the dead ant to a place away from the
colony so that the odor doesn’t continue to affect the colony. (
● Acts of kindness make us happier and healthier- A study done by Sonja Lyubomirsky, a
professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, being kinder lead to
living a healthier life. "We did one study where we had people do acts of kindness over
10 weeks," she said. The volunteers showed to be happier, especially when the activities
were varied.
● Google hires goats to cut grass- For an environmental friendly option, instead of using
lawnmowers, google employs a flock of 200 goats. They cost about the same as
lawnmowers but they don’t pollute the air. They also fertilize the soil too. “It costs us
about the same as mowing, and goats are a lot cuter to watch than lawnmowers,” says
Dan Hoffman, director of real estate and workplace services at Google’s headquarters in
Mountain View, California, who employed the goats.
● Sectoral Heterochromia- when parts of the iris is a different color than the rest of the iris.
For example, part of the iris may be hazel, while a section the of the iris is green.
Another form of heterochromia is when one eye is a different color than the other eye.
There are many genetic and non-genetic factors that come into play when one has
Sectoral heterochromia. A child may be born with it, or it comes as part of rare genetic
diseases such as Waardenburg syndrome, Sturge-Weber syndrome, Parry-Romberg
syndrome, or Horner's syndrome. Non-genetic reason to why someone may have
Heterochromia include Injury or trauma to the eye, melanoma of the eye, treatment of
glaucoma with certain medications such as Latanoprost or Bimatoprost or
neuroblastoma.
● Ants have magnetic compasses in their antennas- This sixth sense helps them find food
and find their way. It's like an internal GPS. Researchers used a powerful magnetic force
to disrupt the ant’s magnetic compass, the ants lost their way. They use this to create
landmarks and leave a trail when they are out of the colony.
● Camping can reset your biological clock- A study done by a professor of integrative
physiology at the University of Colorado, Kenneth Wright, shows that camping will reset
your sleeping clock. Many of us have stayed up late doing work, and that messes our
sleep cycle. In the study, he checked the melatonin levels, this is how he kept track of
circadian rhythms. Melatonin is the hormone that regulates sleep. "In the modern
environment, those melatonin levels fall back down a couple of hours after we wake up,"
Kenneth Wright says. "Our brains say we should be sleeping several hours after we
wake up." The volunteer's clocks were out of balance, they would usually wake and
sleep at times that were not adjusted with their internal clock. "[Melatonin] would go
down at sunrise and right when people woke up," Wright says. After the participants
came back from a week long camping trip, their clocks were reset. They didn’t feel as
tired.
● The story behind the name sundae- Ice Cream sundaes were invented when it became
illegal to sell ice-cream sodas on a Sunday in the during the late 19th century in the
town of Evanston. To avoid the dilemma some traders replaced the soda with syrup and
called the dessert an "Ice Cream Sunday”.
● May 29th- this day marks the “put your pillow in a fridge day”. This weird tradition
originates from when people used to put linen or cloth in their larders in the early 20th
century. It supposedly brought good fortune, health, prosperity and luckinto the
household. The spread of this holiday in modern times is thanks to social media. There
● Boanthropy- Boanthropy is an actual psychological disorder in which the person thinks
they are a cow. They try to live their life as if they are a cow or sometimes an ox. They
travel on all fours and eat grass. King Nebuchadnezzar, is a historical example of
someone who suffered this disorder. He “was driven from men and did eat grass as
oxen”.
● How Salvador Dali got out of paying for meals- The surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, would
draw on the back of his checks to get out of paying for drinks and meals. He would write
the amount, his name, and sign the check. But before he gave it back, he drew on the
back of it. These works of art were priceless, but they were uncashable. He knew the
owner would now cash in the checks, but instead hang them up for others to see a Dali
● Eat saltwater, not drink it- i=If you ever find yourself in a survival situation, eat frozen
seawater, don't drink liquid seawater. Drinking seawater will quickly dehydrate you,
leading to you death. But eating frozen seawater is better. You won't dehydrate as
fast because it contains a tenth of the amount of salt. The salt separates when it
freezes therefore, it won’t dehydrate you as much.
