En la época de la Independencia, los habitantes de Barranquilla tomaron partido por el movimiento
independentista criollo.
Barranquilla fue centro de las operaciones militares de los republicanos de 1820 a 1821.
En 1858, Barranquilla fue designada capital de distrito municipal.
A principios de los Estados Unidos de Colombia, la creciente importancia comercial de Barranquilla
promovió la construcción, entre 1869 y 1871, del Ferrocarril de Bolívar, primera línea férrea de la
actual Colombia, entre Barranquilla y Sabanilla (Salgar), donde funcionaba la aduana.
In the time of Independence, the inhabitants of Barranquilla took sides for the independence
movement Creole.
