Live frog exhibit opens with family activities January Events at<br />

Wistariahurst Museum<br />

SPRINGFIELD – A day of family activities will mark<br />

the open<strong>in</strong>g of the special “exh-ribit” Frogs: A Chorus of<br />

Colors at the Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield Science Museum on Saturday,<br />

Jan. 21. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.<br />

and are free with museum admission unless noted.<br />

Special exhibits<br />

• Frogs: A Chorus of Colors br<strong>in</strong>gs visitors <strong>in</strong>to the colorful,<br />

sound-filled world of frogs. Fifteen different habitats<br />

filled with rock ledges, live plants and waterfalls are home<br />

to a variety of frogs from around the world. <strong>The</strong> exhibit<br />

also <strong>in</strong>cludes videos of frogs <strong>in</strong> the wild, recorded frog<br />

calls, and <strong>in</strong>teractive stations that reveal fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g frog<br />

facts. ($5 special exhibition fee for all visitors ages 3 and<br />

up <strong>in</strong> addition to museum admission.)<br />

• Old Masters to Monet: Three Centuries of French<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, 50 masterpieces that provide a comprehensive<br />

history of French art with pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs by Monet, Degas,<br />

Renoir, Pissarro, Van Gogh and other artists, many of<br />

whom are also represented <strong>in</strong> the permanent collections of<br />

the D’Amour Museum. (<strong>The</strong>re is a special exhibition fee<br />

of $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12-17 <strong>in</strong> addition<br />

to museum admission to view Old Masters to Monet.<br />

Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a pay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

adult.)<br />

A comb<strong>in</strong>ation ticket to see both special exhibits is<br />

$12.50 for adults; $7.50 for children ages 12-17; and $5<br />

for children 3-11.<br />

Performances<br />

• “<strong>The</strong> Frog Pr<strong>in</strong>ce” by the Pumpernickel Puppets, 1<br />

p.m. - Young Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Tad has been teas<strong>in</strong>g the forest creatures<br />

so a magic tree turns him <strong>in</strong>to a frog to teach him a<br />

<strong>lesson</strong>. Along the way he meets a pr<strong>in</strong>cess who could turn<br />

him back with a kiss.<br />

• Teach<strong>in</strong>g Creatures presents “Hooray for Herps”, 10:45<br />

a.m. to 12:45 p.m. - A live animal demonstration with both<br />

reptiles and amphibians.<br />

January Gallery Exhibition—<br />

Matt Evald Johnson: Recent Figurations<br />

Matt Johnson is <strong>in</strong>spired by the urban/<strong>in</strong>dustrial scene,<br />

which supplies him with subject, materials, processes<br />

and narrative. Johnson’s recent work be<strong>in</strong>g shown <strong>in</strong><br />

the carved steel gallery is an assemblage and manipulation<br />

of raw material. <strong>The</strong>se materials used for the<br />

sculpture <strong>in</strong> Recent Figurations have been reclaimed<br />

from the urban and <strong>in</strong>dustrial environments that record<br />

some of the history of their previous lives. Johnson,<br />

who works alone and without heavy equipment, relies<br />

on his physical labor to produce work that merges grace<br />

and brutality, produc<strong>in</strong>g unexpected objects. Johnson’s<br />

work has been shown throughout New England and the<br />

Northeast. Works are on view <strong>in</strong> the gallery through<br />

January. Admission to the gallery $3.<br />

Learn the techniques of tell<strong>in</strong>g a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g tale at<br />

Wistariahurst Museum dur<strong>in</strong>g this <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g workshop!<br />

Activities <strong>in</strong>clude view<strong>in</strong>g examples of portraits pa<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

several decades ago, and learn<strong>in</strong>g the different ways<br />

artists and family members used to tell the story of a<br />

family. Scouts will discover how to figure out the story<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d a picture and apply their own ancestral details<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sk<strong>in</strong>ner Chapel at the United Congregational<br />

Church will celebrate its centennial <strong>in</strong> February. In 1909<br />

the Sk<strong>in</strong>ner Chapel cornerstone was laid as an addition<br />

to the Second Congregational Church. <strong>The</strong> chapel was<br />

dedicated to “<strong>The</strong> Glory of God and the lov<strong>in</strong>g memory<br />

of William and Sarah E. Sk<strong>in</strong>ner” <strong>in</strong> 1912. Jo<strong>in</strong> church<br />

historian Rev. Art Stanley as he shares the story about<br />

this Sk<strong>in</strong>ner Family Gift to Holyoke and reveals the<br />
