Mutual aid, Balance, Attitude and Teamwork
— attributes the church hopes help
participants learn about each other and
the community. The effort is one that
requires the entire church to join forces.
“We see older couples, families and
young kids all come together to put up
the panels — it’s a huge undertaking,”
Bolks said. “It’s a way we’ve reached out
and has given us an identity to some
extent. We’ve had good response and
break it into two days — one for younger
kids and one for older kids and adults.
It’s neat to see all of us engaged. You
come away realizing that we’re all in this
and working together.”
The Sioux Center Church of Christ is
not part of an organized denomination.
There are other Church of Christ congregations
scattered around the country
with similar values but they are not necessarily
tied together in any formal way.
“The Church of Christ tries to emphasize
that they are a restoration project,”
Bolks said. “What that means is getting
back to the church of the Bible and
restoring the church that Jesus built,
among all the other influences that have
made their way to worship ceremonies
and worship practices. At the Church of
Christ, we look to the Bible to restore or
bring back what Jesus left in his Word.”
The church website challenges those
who want to encounter God.
“Ever wonder what the church experience
was like with the apostles and the
very first Christians who took up the
faith?” the website asks. “Well, we strive
to be identified with that first-century
church. We have various challenging
approaches at teaching the scriptures in
order to help you enter into the glory of
God on a personal level; we will help you
rise up from the dark, cramped well of
life and draw your personality out into
wide-open spaces for you to discover
your Christ-like potential.”
The church wants people to take a
closer look at what it has to offer.
“We’ve formulated a motto during
the past year and used that for reaching
out,” Bolks said. “We promoted that as
‘Old Paths, New Adventures.’ That really
captures what we want to emphasize
right now in getting back to the Bible but
finding new adventures.”
The church looks forward to making
an impact in the community
“We’re looking for people who are
dedicated,” Bolks said. “When the numbers
are smaller you try to accomplish a
lot but it’s a challenge.”
Bolks and his wife Chelsea have two
sons, who are 7 and 8. Chelsea works at
the Pizza Ranch. Bolks is glad he came
to Sioux Center and joined the local
Church of Christ.
“I heard about the opportunity here,”
he said. “My kids were anxious to be
close to Grandma and Grandpa. We’ve
really enjoyed the close-knit atmosphere.”
