LAKEMONT RESIDENTS WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
We have several events that the HOA
organizes for the community each
year that require volunteers to make
the events successful. We have had a
difficult time the last couple of years
getting residents to volunteer for
these events. Moving forward if we
don’t have the volunteers, we will
not be able to hold the events. Please
consider volunteering a couple of hours of your time to make
each and every event fun for all. It gives us all the opportunity
to meet our neighbors and enjoy a couple of hours together.
The Holiday Celebration has been held at the Lakehouse for
the past 11 years. Santa comes to the Lakehouse and families
can get their pictures taken with Santa for $10, do crafts and
have cookies. The last 2 years we have had a poor turn out.
We will try again in 2017 to hold this event, but if the turnout
is not better, we will cancel this event in the future. This event
cannot be rescheduled when the weather is bad since we have
to schedule Santa and the Photographer 1 year in advance.
Please sign up with our Events Coordinator to volunteer in
Lakemont. If you have any events that you would like to see
happen in Lakemont please email Ashlie at lakemontevents@
yahoo.com with suggestions and to sign up to volunteer.
Let’s build our community to be strong and supportive.
Can you pick up storm debris? How do I get rid of my storm debris?
We do not collect waste generated from the result of a storm. Please
be patient during this process, if you have storm debris that you need
collected the county will typically make rounds through the communities
affected by the storm to have the storm debris removed. If you are in
Harris County, please visit www.readyharris.com, to see the proper
guidelines and size limitations for the debris collection. If you have hired
a contractor to remove the debris from your home you will need to make
arrangements to have the debris hauled off by the contractor.
TEN GREAT BENEFITS OF HOAS
It’s a smart investment to protect the value of your home. You reap
the benefits of having many advocates who safeguard your interests.
Your association functions because of active volunteers and a topnotch
management company. Here are ten good reasons to live in a
community that has an HOA. Thank you for allowing Crest Management
Company to serve your community.
• HOAs preserve the nature of the community and protect property
values by delivering services and providing a safe, well-maintained
living environment.
• HOA regulations are another layer of protection against neighborhood
degradation and an effective means to maintain community standards
and protect property values.
• HOAs lessen the need for local government oversight of housing
conditions. Most municipalities are not equipped, i.e. do not have the
manpower - to monitor housing.
• Homeowners in HOAs have a vested interest in reporting and
correcting problems from architectural and building code violations to
illegal parking and landscaping issues.
• HOA leaders live in their communities and better understand the
needs of the community, from the delivery of core services, such as
waste collection, to amenities and decisions affecting the future of the
community.
• HOAs promote a higher level of civic involvement than municipalities,
in terms of voting, meeting attendance and volunteerism.
• By definition, planned communities offer a more efficient use of
land to address the growing issue of urban sprawl associated with
unplanned development.
• Land-use efficiencies can make homes more affordable, a benefit
for first-time home buyers, retirees and low-and moderate-income
families.
• Many HOAs maintain swimming pools, tennis courts, playgrounds
and other amenities that most Americans cannot afford on their own.
• Associations offer a sense of community, an important contribution in
an increasingly transient society.
MANAGEMENT COMPANY
Most people believe that the exterior appearance of a home speaks
volumes about the people who live in it. When you see a well maintained
and attractive home there is an automatic assumption that the interior is
also well maintained and attractive. Failure to maintain a home properly
affects its value and the overall value of homes in the neighborhood.
As a part of our contractual agreement with the Association, the
management company visits the community monthly noting deed
restriction violations. On each visit, the management company
representative has a copy of the most recent report. Previous violations
are reviewed and either noted as having been brought into compliance
or a second letter is issued. Should a third letter be required, it is
generally a demand letter. If the property remains in violation following
the third letter, the Board of Directors then makes the decision as to
whether the violation is turned over to an attorney for legal pursuit.
6 Lakemont | June 2017
No one likes to receive a letter from the Association noting a violation.
Should you receive a letter; you may want to first look at the date of
the letter. Perhaps the representative was in the community the day
before you mowed your lawn or returned your boat to storage. In that
case, simply dispose of the letter. The remedy of the violation will be
noted on the next community visit. If the violation noted is still in place,
please contact Crest Management with any questions you may have
regarding the noted violation.
One of the most frequent violations noted is yard maintenance. It is
also the source of the most complaints received from homeowners.
Regular mowing, edging and weeding of beds, mulching, fertilization
and watering is critical in providing curb appeal for your home and
in promoting a community that all homeowners are proud to live in.
Your Governing Documents permit your Association to enter upon
your property to perform the necessary lawn maintenance, if the
homeowner is neglectful. In addition, when you purchased your home,
you agreed to properly maintain your property by agreeing to the deed
restrictions that run with your property.
Don’t particularly enjoy yard work? There are a number of companies
available who will provide that service at a nominal price. Don’t know
how to maintain your yard? Sometimes neighbors helping neighbors
can resolve the problem. Be creative!
Lakemont is a beautiful, young community. But remember, being a good
neighbor is more than just maintaining a house and lawn. Respect for
all community rules, residents and community assets are what make
Lakemont a great community in which to live.
STAY SAFE!
Although we enjoy a very safe neighborhood, outsiders may
occasionally come through looking for trouble. Please be aware of
your surroundings. Always carry your cell phone. If something looks
strange or makes your feel uncomfortable, please call or text a family
member or neighbor and let them know something isn’t right. If you
see an unfamiliar car parked in front of a house or cruising the streets,
don’t ignore it. Call the non-emergency number or the roving police at
832-719-1047. The number for the Ft. Bend Sheriff can be reached at
281-341-4665. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Our police are
here to keep our community safe and they need our help to notify them
when something is wrong.
KEEP LAKEMONT BEAUTIFUL
Our residents take pride in keeping our neighborhoods beautiful.
Please do your part by cutting your grass every week during the
summer. Trees that are close to sidewalks should be trimmed
approximately 8 feet from the ground so that people walking down the
sidewalks will not be impeded by the branches. Likewise, trees with
branches extending over the streets should be trimmed so that cars
and trucks are not damaged. Gardens and flowerbeds should be kept
free of weeds. Trash that has blown into your yard should be picked
up and disposed of properly. Thanks for helping us keep Lakemont
beautiful.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the
sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage
more of the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs
for the rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant
sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for
next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch
well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material
on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by
reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying
wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water
and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3
inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
NATURE’S CLEAN-UP CREW
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
You always know when an animal
has met an untimely and unfortunate
death when you see Black
Vultures or Turkey Vultures. So
how can you tell the difference?
The Black Vulture has a featherless
black-grey head while the
Turkey Vulture has a featherless
red head. In flight, the Black
Vulture is distinguishable by
white-tipped wings, whereas the
majority of the underside of the Turkey Vulture is pale in color.
Both species of vultures feed primarily on carrion. Most of what
vultures eat would make any other animal very sick but they are
strong animals with an incredible digestive system and a very strong
immune system. Their stomachs are extremely acidic. They can usually
survive eating carcasses infected with botulism, anthrax, cholera
and salmonella. Some believe that vultures spread disease because
they eat dead meat. Actually, the opposite is true. They rid our environment
of what could potentially cause the spread of diseases.
WRC receives many calls from the public reporting that a vulture took
up residence in their atrium or on their front porch.
Both parents incubate and the young hatch after 30 to 40 days.
Chicks are altricial or helpless at birth. Both adults feed the chicks
by regurgitating food for them and care for them for 10 to 11 weeks.
When adults are threatened while nesting, they may flee or they may
regurgitate on the intruder or feign death. If the chicks are threatened
in the nest, they defend themselves by hissing and regurgitating.
Family groups will remain together until fall.
Although not endangered, vultures have been impacted by the use
of lead bullets and buckshot used by hunters. If the shot animal is
not removed or covered, vultures will consume the contaminated
meat and become ill or die.
Because of their eating habits and appearance, vultures would probably
never win a “My Favorite Bird” contest or “Most Beautiful Bird”
award but they play an important role in keeping our environment
cleaner and definitely smelling better. Have you thanked a vulture
today?
Turkey Vultures use their eyesight and keen sense of smell to find their
food. By flying low, they are able to see dead animals and detect the
gases produced when an animal begins to decay. They prefer to feed
on animals that are recently dead. Black Vultures can’t smell but will
often follow Turkey Vultures to find food.
The breeding season of the turkey vulture starts in March, peaks in
April to May, and continues into June. Interestingly, vultures don’t
make nests. In most cases, females lay two eggs but have been known
to lay one and rarely three. The eggs are whitish/cream colored and
heavily marked with dark brown or lavender spots around the larger
end. Eggs are generally laid on a bare surface in a protected location. T
PET INFORMATION
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
FT. BEND COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid
of animals and become frightened, which
could result in the child getting hurt trying
to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites
occur on the property where the dog lives,
unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained
animals are at increased risk of being bitten
by rabies-infected wildlife.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is
not properly restrained please contact
Ft. Bend County Animal Control -281-342-1512
“LEASH LAW” INFORMATION
Animal control authorities are permitted to
enter your Property to patrol and remove
pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and
inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the
control of your dog. If your dog is one that
‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make
every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right
to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative
that you keep your dog on a leash
at all times. While your dog is friendly to you
and your family, imagine the consequences
if it were to harm someone while it was
‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk
the common area ground without fear of
attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals
are confined to their property or kept on
a leash to free a community of unrestrained
and free-roaming animals. Although most
dog bites occur on the property where the
dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs
do pose a substantial threat to the public.
In addition, unrestrained animals are at
increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected
wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws
is essential in enhancing the animal control
program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies
in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals
is identification,
should that animal become lost.
Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of
a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administra
tion costs of the animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for
licensing dogs and cats because they are an
important control measure for the public
health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting
pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier
between infected wild animals and humans.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. Nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for
dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler,
please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your
area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you,
too. You may get some insight into why your
dog barks so much, or what it is trying to
communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining it
to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close
drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave
a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals;
they need companionship-a cat, bird or
another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from
a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off
at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are,
please consider and suggest rescuing vs.
buying a dog from a breeder. We have every
breed of purebred dog available in our Texas
pounds and shelters, in great quantities.
This is because of the complete lack of any
regulations or limit on breeding in Texas.
• Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in
pounds involve purebred animals.
• Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no
chance of making it out of the pounds alive.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with
these dogs; they just had the misfortune of
being owned by people who did not provide
for their needs and care and obviously had
no real commitment to their pet.
• Countless numbers of people turn their
own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump
them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let
them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality
that most dog lovers do not understand.
• When you or someone you know considers
adopting a dog, please check out one of our
five local animal shelters:
1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and
Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city
pound
Father’s Day 2017 is not a federal holiday
and falls on the third Sunday of
June. The date of the Holiday changes
each year but always remains on a
Sunday.
Significance of Father’s Day 2017
It is a day that commemorates fatherhood and appreciates
all fathers and father-figures (including grandfathers,
great-grandfathers, stepfathers and foster
fathers), as well as their contribution to society.
History of Father’s Day
The History of Father’s Day 2017 dates back to 1910 in
Spokane, Washington, where 27-year-old Sonora Dodd
proposed it as a way to honor the man (a civil war veteran
William Jackson Smart) who raised her and her five
siblings alone after her mom died in childbirth. Dodd
was at a church thinking about how grateful she was for
her father when she had the idea for Father’s Day, which
would mirror Mother’s Day but be celebrated in June,
her dad’s birthday month.
It is said that she was inspired after hearing a sermon
about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909 at Central Methodist
Episcopal Church and she therefore told her pastor that
fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. A
bill to nationally recognize the holiday was introduced
in Congress in 1913.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to
speak in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make
it official, but Congress resisted, with the fear that it was
just another commercialized holiday. The movement
grew for years but only became popular nationally in
1924 under former President Calvin Coolidge.
The holiday gained popularity during World War II, with
most men leaving their families to fight in the war. In
1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the
third Sunday of June to be Father’s Day. US President
Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be
celebrated by the nation, but stopped short of issuing
a national proclamation.
Two attempts to formally recognize the holiday had
earlier been rejected by Congress. In 1966, President
Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation
honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday
in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made
a permanent national holiday when President Richard
Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
Traditions of Father’s Day 2017
Traditionally, families gather to celebrate the father
figures in their lives. Father’s Day is a relatively modern
holiday so different families have a range of traditions.
Many people send or give cards or traditionally masculine
gifts such as sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets,
outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household
maintenance. In the days and weeks leading to Father’s
Day, many schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade
card or small gift for their fathers. Additionally,
the US Open golf tournament is scheduled to finish on
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!! JUNE 18TH
FLAG DAY
June 14, 2017
People across the United States celebrate Flag Day on June 14th each year to
honor the United States flag and to commemorate the flag’s adoption. On the
same day, the United States Army celebrates its birthday.
What Do People Do?
Flag Day falls within National Flag Week, a time when Americans reflect on the
foundations of the nation’s freedom. The flag of the United States represents
freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since its early
days. During both events, Americans also remember their loyalty to the nation,
reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice and observe the nation’s unity.
Many people in the United States honor this day by displaying the American flag
at homes and public buildings. Other popular ways of observing this holiday
include: flag-raising ceremonies; Flag Day services; school quizzes and essay
competitions about the American flag; musical salutes; street parades and
awards for special recognition.
Organizations such as The National Flag Day Foundation are actively involved
in coordinating activities centered on the event and keeping the flag’s traditions
alive. Following Flag Day is Honor America Days, a 21-day period through to Independence
Day (July 4th) to honor America. During this period, people hold public
gatherings and activities to celebrate and honor the nation.
Public Life
Although Flag Day is a nationwide observance, it is not a public holiday in many
parts of the United States. It is a legal holiday in a few areas in the USA, such as
Montour County in Pennsylvania.
Background
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the
Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field
of blue and 13 red and white stripes - one for each state. Although it is not certain,
this flag may have been made by the Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, who was
an official flag maker for the Pennsylvania Navy. The number of stars increased
as the new states entered the Union, but the number of stripes stopped at 15 and
was later returned to 13.
In June 1886, Bernard Cigrand made his first public proposal for the annual observance
of the birth of the flag when he wrote an article titled “The Fourteenth
of June” in the old Chicago Argus newspaper. Cigrand’s effort to ensure national
observance of Flag Day finally came when President Woodrow Wilson issued a
proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of the event on June 14, 1916.
However, Flag Day did not become official until August 1949, when President
Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14th as Flag Day. In
1966, Congress also requested that the President issue annually a proclamation
designating the week in which June 14th occurs as National Flag Week.
Each year the President is requested to issue a proclamation to: call on government
officials in the USA to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings
on Flag Day and to urge US residents to observe Flag Day as the anniversary
of the adoption on June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress of the Stars and
Stripes as the official flag of the United States.
Symbols
The American flag, also nicknamed as “Old Glory” or “star-spangled banner,” has
changed designs over the centuries. It consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes of
red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton
bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars. Each of the 50 stars represents one
of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13
colonies that became the first states in the Union.
