Andrew Wakefield: Fraud Written By: Jonathan Woods Andrew Wakefield, now known as a fraud in the medical field by many and those who choose to believe it, and it is for a good reason. Afterall, he caused a massive spike of fear within parents throughout the world in the late 90s about vaccine safety, by publishing a study that had a “link” between autism and vaccines. His study was published in 1998, and has since been retracted, as many scientists proved that his data was wrong. 11 out of 12 of the people that worked with Wakefield on this study voted to retract the information. Wakefield got himself into a lot of legal trouble with his study. The courts of UK got involved and caused the study to be retracted and for Wakefield to lose his medical liscence in the UK. He was found to have ties with a competing vaccination company that looked to profit from the chaos that it created. The problem with his study was that his sample size was very small, so the data taken is not a good representation, especially when you then try to apply the data that they found to millions of people. “The study had an uncontrolled experiment design, so others who may be looking to recreate the study would struggle. Speculative conclusions were also made by the group, further adding for the decision to withdraw from the Lancet” (Rao para 7). Court decisions found Wakefield guilty of skewing results, on the grounds of taking money from certain individuals. They also suspended his medical license.
