WATER SAFETY TIPS
COURTESY OF THE “SIMPLE STEPS SAVE LIVES” PROGRAM
1. Staying close, being alert and watching children in and around the pool
• Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your child
when he or she is in or near water.
• Teach children basic water safety tips.
• Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid
entrapments.
• Have a telephone close by when you or your family is using a pool or spa.
• If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first.
• Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors.
2. Learning and practicing water safety skills
• Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim.
• Learn to perform CPR on children and adults and update those skills
regularly.
• Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in a pool
emergency.
3. Having appropriate equipment for your pool or spa
• Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use selfclosing
and self latching
gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.
• Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.
• If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door
alarms and always use them. For additional protection, install window guards
on windows facing pools or spas.
• Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water.
• Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers and ask your
pool service provider if you don’t know.
• Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order.
• Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm.
For more tips for pool and spa owners, visit www.poolsafely.gov.

8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Tompkins High
School from July 10 th to July 14 th . The camp will include daily section
rehearsals, full band rehearsals and fun music based electives. Lunch is
also part of the camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a
t-shirt if registered by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need
to include a late registration fee of $25 totaling $155. All registrations
must be postmarked by Friday, June 23 rd . The camp concludes with the
Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning at 9 AM. After the concert, those
students wishing to extend the fun a little longer can join in the group’s
optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an additional $35 (park admission,
meal, bus transportation and drinks are included in price) for a total
camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5 th ). The KISD JH Summer Band Camp
has been a huge success each year and we anticipate a large enrollment
again this year.
Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as
soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare
major scales and chromatic scales specific to the student’s instrument,
as well as a band camp audition etude, which can be downloaded from
the webpage below. Students will be ability grouped with the number of
bands being determined by total enrollment for the camp. Registration
Form, Audition materials and Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent
Form can be downloaded by campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts
Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/finearts. An email confirmation is sent
out upon receipt of registration and follow up reminders from the camp
coordinator will be sent before the camp begins, so make sure your email
address is clearly printed on the registration form.
The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those
who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the
summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive top
quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD and
Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the fifteenth annual Katy ISD
Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills sharp for
the year! Camp brochures, with the registration form, will be distributed
to KISD band students by their schools’ directors. Camp brochures can
also be downloaded from the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage above. Plan to
register early in order to guarantee a spot! Again, registrations must be
postmarked by Friday, June 23 rd . If you have already registered and have
not received your confirmation email, contact kisdbandcamp17@gmail.
com to make sure your registration has been received.
CAMP FLAMING ARROW
Hunt, Texas • 830-238-4631 • ymcasatx.org/campflamingarrow
Coed Campers, Ages 6-16
Our camp goal is to provide a summer camp experience rich in tradition
centered on our core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and
faith, and allowing campers to gain independence, a higher self-worth and
life-long, positive memories. For instance, Pow Wow, our chapel time, is
led by an assigned cabin (teaching responsibility) and a lesson is taught
about the value of the day (e.g. Monday is devoted to discussing the value
of caring.) Our staff wear their value t-shirts daily to remind all campers
12 June 2017 | Katy West Community Newsletter

what the emphasis is for that day. Even discipline is structured around our
values: for instance, a time-out for being uncaring and disrespectful to
a fellow camper. Activities are taught with the premise of respecting the
safety rules and always having faith in yourself and others. Each evening
is concluded with an in-cabin devotional, called Embers, which closes
the day by reflecting on the daily value, daily activities and fellowship
with cabin mates and counselors. These values transcend the camp
session and supplement the values taught at home. The YMCA Ragger
Program is also offered for those youth and staff who wish to be a part of
a more spiritual self-growth program.
Coed Campers, Ages 5-18
A tradition of excellence since 1967, fantastic activities, and besttrained
counselors are a few of the reasons that Camp Champions is
consistently ranked among the top camps in the country, but what
really sets our camp apart is the intentional community we create
year after year. We believe every child has an inner Champion, and
we create a loving community in which every camper can flourish.
Whether they realize it or not, we push every camper to grow in
character skills like independence and confidence while they are at
camp. And because there is an important niche in our community for
every camper to fill, we are consistently told that our campers are free
to discover “the best versions of themselves.” We are as committed
to children and their growth as any institution or program out there,
and our community is the primary way we support campers in this
goal. Of course, we wouldn’t be able to create such a community if
we didn’t have such a blast every day at camp!
means that campers choose from two or three activities offered that day, like
kite-building, snorkeling, mountain-biking and more. We want campers to feel
excited about their activities each day, so we are always coming up with new
and different camper’s choices, such as fort-building or yoga. Meals, evening
activities, worships and morning watch are all camp-wide activities that give
kids the chance to meet everyone at camp and hang out with all our Counselors.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the
rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant
sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next
season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with
oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of
material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve
water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the
drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation
water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly,
a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
JUNE IS NATIONAL
CAMPING MONTH
The sun is up, the birds are singing and the mosquitoes are finally
hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn’t all rainbows and fresh fish,
but June is Camping Month and it’s a great opportunity to get outside
with the family and enjoy the great outdoors. Research shows that
people who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed and tend to
buy more bug repellant. What? We don’t like mosquitoes any more than
you do, but we do love camping! Who doesn’t love sitting under the stars
roasting marshmallows and making S’mores or waking up to the smell of
wood smoke and bacon?
History of Camping Month
While there was a time when ‘camping’ was just called ‘being alive,’ that
all changed in the 1800’s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding
began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a
part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail and
once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced
to others. Once camping in general had become popularized, Thomas
went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world.
This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride until you find a
spot to camp, get up the next day and do it all over again.
What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle
of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham’s Camp. From this point in
history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere
weekend family getaways, to RV camping and everything in between.
Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the
evening or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a backpack full
of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.
How to celebrate Camping Month
Well, this has got to be the easiest answer ever, GO CAMPING. Even if it’s
just a pop-up tent and sleeping bag in your backyard under the stars,
get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. There’s a place to
find your soul and set your mind to peace out in the great distant woods
and they’re calling all of us to head back out there and find ourselves. So
pile into your car, find yourself some secluded spot to set up a tent and
celebrating Camping Month by going camping!
