WATER SAFETY TIPS

1. Staying close, being alert and watching children in and around the pool 

• Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your child 

when he or she is in or near water. 

• Teach children basic water safety tips. 

• Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid 

entrapments. 

• Have a telephone close by when you or your family is using a pool or spa. 

• If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first. 

• Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors. 

2. Learning and practicing water safety skills 

• Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim. 

• Learn to perform CPR on children and adults and update those skills 

regularly. 

• Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in a pool 

emergency. 

3. Having appropriate equipment for your pool or spa 

• Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use selfclosing 

and self latching 

gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools. 

• Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa. 

• If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door 

alarms and always use them. For additional protection, install window guards 

on windows facing pools or spas. 

• Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water. 

• Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers and ask your 

pool service provider if you don’t know. 

• Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order. 

• Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm.

JUNE 1ST: EARLY DISMISSAL 

& LAST DAY OF SCHOOL 

KATY ISD SUMMER BAND CAMP 

The fifteenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th , 

8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Tompkins High 

School from July 10 th to July 14 th . The camp will include daily section 

rehearsals, full band rehearsals and fun music based electives. Lunch is 

also part of the camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a 

t-shirt if registered by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need 

to include a late registration fee of $25 totaling $155. All registrations 

must be postmarked by Friday, June 23 rd . The camp concludes with the 

Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning at 9 AM. After the concert, those 

students wishing to extend the fun a little longer can join in the group’s 

optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an additional $35 (park admission, 

meal, bus transportation and drinks are included in price) for a total 

camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5 th ). The KISD JH Summer Band Camp 

has been a huge success each year and we anticipate a large enrollment 

again this year. 

Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as 

soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare 

major scales and chromatic scales specific to the student’s instrument, 

as well as a band camp audition etude, which can be downloaded from 

the webpage below. Students will be ability grouped with the number of 

bands being determined by total enrollment for the camp. Registration 

Form, Audition materials and Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent 

Form can be downloaded by campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts 

Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/finearts. An email confirmation is sent 

out upon receipt of registration and follow up reminders from the camp 

coordinator will be sent before the camp begins, so make sure your email 

address is clearly printed on the registration form. 

The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those 

who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the 

summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive top 

quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD and 

Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the fifteenth annual Katy ISD 

Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills sharp for 

the year! Camp brochures, with the registration form, will be distributed 

to KISD band students by their schools’ directors. Camp brochures can 

also be downloaded from the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage above. Plan to 

register early in order to guarantee a spot! Again, registrations must be 

postmarked by Friday, June 23 rd . If you have already registered and have

Katy Independent School District has again received the “Best 

Communities for Music Education” designation from the National 

Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding 

commitment to music education for the 14 th year. Katy ISD is one of 4% of 

school districts across the nation to receive this prestigious award.

JUNE 2017 TAKS EXIT LEVEL RETEST 

Students who did not meet the passing standard on sections of the 

Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Exit Level will have the 

opportunity to retake the necessary subject tests in June 2017. 

Students currently enrolled in school who need to retest are automatically 

registered; however, those who are out of school need to register online 

by 5 PM(CT), May 26 th by accessing the website at www.TexasAssessment. 

com/taksoos. Those wishing to take the exam and missed the online 

registration can continue to register at a participating campus on the 

day of testing, if the campus can accommodate them. Additionally, 

they should arrive at the test site 30 minutes before the designated start 

time of 7:30 AM. A picture identification, such as driver’s license, DPS ID, 

military ID, school ID or resident alien card must be presented to test. 

The 2017 June online TAKS tests will be administered on the following dates:

SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL 

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA (FBLA) 

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is a nationwide organization 

aimed at introducing business concepts to high schoolers. FBLA offers 

students the opportunity to compete in events such as Personal Finance, 

Public Speaking and Networking Concepts at the local, state and national 

levels. The Seven Lakes FBLA chapter has over 250 members and is one 

of the largest chapters in Texas. This year, a team of three students 

- Bhumika Kapur, Meghana Potturu and Amy Yang - competed in the 

American Enterprise Project, which aims to teach the local community’s 

youth about financial responsibility. To achieve this purpose, the team 

wrote and illustrated a children’s book that introduces basic financial 

concepts and held readings at Katy ISD elementary schools including 

Kilpatrick, Alexander and Griffin. Additionally, the team invited prominent 

business leader, Amy Suhl, VP and CIO of Shell Projects and Technology, 

to be a guest speaker at Seven Lakes. Mrs. Suhl shared her experiences 

as a top executive with an audience of Seven Lakes FBLA members. The 

team received first place at the State Leadership Conference held in 

San Antonio March 23 rd -25 th and the teammates are on their way to the 

National Leadership Conference in California.

Katy Area Tennis (KAT) is the newest, non-profit tennis organization

Our camp goal is to provide a summer camp experience rich in tradition 

centered on our core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and 

faith, and allowing campers to gain independence, a higher self-worth and 

life-long, positive memories. For instance, Pow Wow, our chapel time, is 

led by an assigned cabin (teaching responsibility) and a lesson is taught 

about the value of the day (e.g. Monday is devoted to discussing the value 

of caring.) Our staff wear their value t-shirts daily to remind all campers 


what the emphasis is for that day. Even discipline is structured around our

GRAMPA DAVE’S TEXAS BAR-B-QUE SAUCE 

2 tablespoons butter 

1 medium onion, finely chopped 

2 garlic, minced 

1/2 cup orange juice 

1 cup cider vinegar 

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 

2 slices lemon 

1 cup real maple syrup 

1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 

2 cups ketchup 

1/4 cup molasses 

1/4 cup brown sugar 

2 tablespoons dry mustard 

1 teaspoon salt 

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 

1/2 teaspoon paprika 

DIRECTIONS: 

Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic; cook and stir 

until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the orange juice, cider vinegar, lemon juice, lemon 

slices, maple syrup, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, molasses and brown sugar. Season with 

dry mustard, salt, red pepper flakes, cumin and paprika. Simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour. 

Remove lemon slices before using.

PARTY BEANS 

1 1lb tube of regular or spicy Sausage 

(browned and drained) 

4 (15 to 16 oz cans different types of beans... 

Drain half liquid (dark red kidney, black beans, 

navy beans, pinto beans, etc.) 

1 (31 oz) can pork and beans ( Do not drain) 

½ cup brown sugar 

½ cup barbecue sauce 

½ cup ketchup 

½ large onion, chopped 

1 10oz can regular or 

spicy chopped tomatoes, drained 

1 teaspoon liquid smoke 

1 teaspoon mustard 

½ teaspoon salt 

½ teaspoon ground pepper 

6 to 8 strips bacon 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 . In a large skillet, brown the 

sausage, breaking it up into pieces as it cooks. 

When cooked through, remove from skillet and 

drain fat. 

In very large bowl, mix sausage and everything 

else except bacon. Transfer mixture to a 9x13 inch 

or other large baking pan. Place bacon strips on 

top and bake for 1 hour. If necessary, run under 

broiler to crisp bacon before serving. Makes 15 

servings. 

I have also put this mixture in a crockpot 

on low for 4 hours.

1 sheet (18x24”) heavy duty aluminum 

foil or Reynolds cooking packet 

4 ears corn-on-the-cob, husked 

1/4 cup butter, softened 

salt & pepper to taste 

OR 

seasoning salt 

2 ice cubes 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 450° or build a medium-high grill in 

campfire or barbecue. 

Spread margarine on corn. Sprinkle with seasonings. 

Top with ice cubes. Place corn in aluminum foil. 

Double fold top and ends to seal making one large foil 

packet or place ingredients in an aluminum cooking 

bag and seal carefully. Leave room for heat circulation 

inside. Bake 35 to 40 minutes on a cookie sheet in 

oven or grill 15 to 20 minutes. Turn packet over once 

during cooking. Open carefully to avoid steam and

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE 

Lawns 

• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. 

• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. 

Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. 

• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 

degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part 

of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. 

Flowers 

• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. 

• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of 

the beautiful foliage. 

• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, 

Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, 

Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,

Vegetables 

• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the 

rest of the day. 

• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant 

sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. 

Shrubs 

• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next 

season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with 

oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. 

Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of 

material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve 

water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the 

drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation 

water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, 

a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

SUMMER READING CLUBS “Build a Better World” - May 29-August 31, 2017 

Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during 

the summer to encourage reading among people of all ages. Library 

programs and activities begin during the week of June 5 th and continue 

through July 29 th . There is no charge to join the Summer Reading 

Clubs (SRC) and they are open to everyone, regardless of the county of 

residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or 

they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend. 

lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image. When the online 

registration form has been completed, readers will then have their own 

online page on which to record their books or reading time. Reading 

rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 5 th . Prizes must be 

collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on 

the registration form. The last day to pick up awards is August 31 st . The 

Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, 

the Friends organizations that support the county library system and the 

Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working 

together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program 

materials for public libraries. 

SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN 

Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to 

come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting 

programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! 

Children are encouraged to read or listen to as many books as they can 

and they will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read 

or have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive a 

bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil 

for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 

20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a picture 

of a builder’s block to be displayed in that branch library. The names of 

participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores 

that will be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a 

drawing scheduled in August at each library location. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE 

Area youth in grades 6 th -8 th can participate in the SRC by logging online 

the time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books

CAMPING MONTH 

The sun is up, the birds are singing and the mosquitoes are finally 

hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn’t all rainbows and fresh fish, 

but June is Camping Month and it’s a great opportunity to get outside 

with the family and enjoy the great outdoors. Research shows that 

people who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed and tend to 

buy more bug repellant. What? We don’t like mosquitoes any more than 

you do, but we do love camping! Who doesn’t love sitting under the stars 

roasting marshmallows and making S’mores or waking up to the smell of 

wood smoke and bacon? 

History of Camping Month 

While there was a time when ‘camping’ was just called ‘being alive,’ that 

all changed in the 1800’s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding 

began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a 

part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail and 

once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced 

to others. Once camping in general had become popularized, Thomas 

went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world. 

This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride until you find a 

spot to camp, get up the next day and do it all over again. 

What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle 

of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham’s Camp. From this point in 

history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere 

weekend family getaways, to RV camping and everything in between. 

Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the 

evening or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a backpack full 

of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.

Completing the weekly challenges will gain readers additional entries for 

the monthly drawings for an FBCL stainless steel insulated bottle. The 

monthly drawings will take place at the ends of June and July at each 

branch library for readers who log in and record their reading each week. 

All YA and adult readers who complete the goal of reading five books will 

earn a dual highlighter/pen. In addition, the names of participants who 

complete at least five books will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift 

card that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library in a 

drawing that will take place at the end of July. An ultimate grand prize 

will be awarded to one lucky reader in the library system. Participants 

in the YA/Adult Summer Reading Club who complete the program by 

reading five books will be entered into a drawing for a 16 GB Fire HD 8 

tablet with a red case, which will be awarded to one winner in the library 

system on July 31 st . The last day to pick up awards is August 5 th .
