▷ Following the great success of the inaugural
event last November, this year will see the second
DPC Innovation Awards event in London, UK, on
29 November 2017.
Following very positive feedback, the format will
remain essentially unchanged: the black tie dinner
will be followed by the awards, with guests able to
network or relax into the early hours.
Dredging and Port Construction has been involved
with, and reported on, the industry, the people, the
vessels, the companies, the projects, the equipment,
and the technology for almost 50 years.
In a world where recession and regulation has had
profound effects on the industry, I believe it is
important to recognise those – whether companies or
individuals – who change the industry through new
ideas, processes, technology, or equipment.
I strongly believe this is a healthy innovative
industry with creative, problem-solving people and
cutting-edge technology. DPC has created an event
that highlights that.
The DPC Innovation Awards programme consists of
15 awards across three categories, looking at the most
innovative and forward-thinking projects and people
the industry has to offer and bringing together the
best of the dredging and port construction sectors.
In this issue, I focus on the dredging awards; the
next issue will be about the ports and people awards.
Dredging Innovation Awards
Innovation in dredger design
This rewards the very best in innovative dredger design,
whether built or launched. If your vessel is fi rst to include
a unique feature, structure, or function, it is eligible.
In your entry please state what makes this design/
vessel unique and/or innovative. The judges will be
looking at criteria including, but not limited to, the
following:
• Cost-effi ciency results for a client
•
Other efficiency improvements
•
Environmental effects/advantages
• Regulation requirements/adherence
• Groundbreaking R&D – this needs to be proved to
meet specific project/client needs
Innovation in project design -
open water/coastal dredging
The winner of this category is the most innovative in
its class. This category can include any project that is
offshore, near-shore, coastal, or in ports. Capital,
expansion, or reclamation works are all eligible as long
as they demonstrate an innovative component.
In your entry please state what makes this design/
project unique and/or innovative. The judges will be
looking at criteria including, but not limited to, the
following:
• Cost-effi ciency results for a client
• Other efficiency improvements
• Environmental effects/advantages
• Regulation requirements/adherence
Innovation in project design - inland dredging
The winner of this category is the most innovative in
its class. This category can include any project that is
on rivers, canals, ponds, and lakes. Capital, expansion,
or reclamation works are all eligible as long as they
demonstrate an innovative component.
In your entry please state what makes this design/
project unique and/or innovative. The judges will be
looking at criteria including, but not limited to, the
following:
• Cost-effi ciency results for a client
• Other efficiency improvements
• Environmental effects/advantages
• Regulation requirements/adherence
• Groundbreaking R&D – this needs to be proved to
meet specific project/client needs
Innovation in dredging equipment
Dredging equipment can include engines, pumps and
wear parts, cutter heads, cranes, onboard software,
and even one-off solutions to specific projects.
Whether totally novel or upgrades to existing
equipment, the winner of this category will clearly
demonstrate innovation.
In your entry please state what makes this
equipment unique and/or innovative. The judges will
be looking at criteria including, but not limited to, the
following:
• Cost efficiency results for a client
• Other efficiency improvements
• Environmental effects/advantages
• Regulation requirements/adherence
• Groundbreaking R&D – this needs to be proved to
meet specific project/client needs
• Innovative support services
There are many support services that enable or
enrich the dredging sector but do not include physical
dredging activity: examples include education and
