SUCCESS STORIES - PROFESSIONAL GOALS...
MELISSA MORTON
Horticulture Course - 2003-2005
Melissa Morton Garden Design, Ilkley
‘I have fond memories of studying Horticulture as an evening
class at Shipley College.
My tutor encouraged me to study the RHS General and RHS
Advanced Certificates (at the same time!) to ensure I trained
to the level best for me. His breadth of knowledge and
commitment over the modules delivered was inspiring.
I recall searching for part-time evening classes within a large
commutable area from Ilkley as I was working full-time.
There was little available back then and I feel fortunate
that Shipley College offered something which challenged
me. I particularly enjoyed the soil science and the practical
workshops in propagation in the glasshouses. It’s great
that the College continues to inspire Horticulture.’
“
ASIM HUSSAIN
Business Administration Apprenticeship - 2015-2016
Administrator, Wycliffe C of E Primary School, Saltaire
‘I can honestly say that doing an Apprenticeship is the best thing
I have chosen to do.
Throughout my apprenticeship, my employer and tutors were very
supportive and helped me gain experience in the workplace and
complete the course. My line manager is just the best.
She always has time for me and I can talk to her about anything
I don’t understand. She welcomes new ideas and offers advice and
guidance to help put them in to place. The rest of the team I work
with are all approachable, friendly and help me to continue to learn
every day. I was really pleased when I was offered a permanent,
full-time position. I love my job, and am always excited to
come in to work and have not missed a day.’
JULIE BATES
Business Administration -1997-1999
Senior Business Manager, Stafforce Recruitment, Bradford
‘After my course I worked in a few different temporary
administration roles to build up my skills and experiences.
The recruitment agency that helped me find the roles
then saw my potential and offered me a job working for
them. Before long, I was a recruitment consultant and
then eventually worked my up through the company to be
Branch Manager. When the company was taken over in 2011
by Stafforce Recruitment, I became the Senior Business
Manager and was running the Bradford and Leeds Offices.
I am now responsible for meeting new clients and finding
new business to support their recruitment and training.
I enjoyed my time at Shipley College and feel that it gave
me a good understanding of business
and helped me start my career.’
EMPLOYER PERSPECTIVE
Recruit new talent or develop your existing workforce with Shipley College
BENEFIT FROM:
WHAT OUR EMPLOYERS SAY:
• Simple & cost effective recruitment
• Filling junior positions, freeing up existing staff’s time to take
on other responsibilities
• Support & guidance throughout, from recruitment & selection
to training & completion
• Advice on costs & funding
You will be in safe hands - we have a successful track record
delivering apprenticeships to small and medium sized
organisations. In addition, the way apprenticeships are now
funded gives a lot more flexibility to ensure that the training
meets your business needs.
We have the expertise to provide the existing frameworks and
new standards (subject to approval):
‘The quality of candidates I reviewed for vacancies from Shipley
College is far superior to those I have received from other training
providers. The College team understands my priorities as a
small business employer in the service sector and works hard to
support me and my apprentices throughout the training.
The apprentices receive an all round post-school education
which helps to develop them in to great employees
and colleagues.’
‘Redfern is embarking on its 3rd year in providing Advanced
Apprenticeships in Customer Service with Shipley College.
We recognise the value in growing our own talent and
internal promotion and progression. By the time apprentices
complete their training, they have gained the knowledge and
skills in customer service as well as experience of the travel
industry. Shipley College is instrumental in this process from
ADVANCED
LEARNER
LOAN
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A COURSE, BUT NOT SURE
IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO PAY THE FEES AT THIS TIME,
YOU CAN APPLY FOR AN ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN TO
HELP YOU WITH THE COSTS. THEY ARE FOR ANYONE
AGED 19 AND OVER TO HELP FUND THE TUITION
FEES TO STUDY QUALIFICATIONS AT LEVEL 3 OR 4.
REPAYMENTS ON THE LOAN DON’T START UNTIL YOU
START TO EARN MORE THAN £21,000 PER YEAR AND
AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE COURSE.
If you are wondering if this may be an option for you,
see what one of our students says about how the Advanced
Learner Loan helped him:
‘I applied for an Advanced Learner Loan so
I could complete the Professional Diploma in
Accounting Level 4 at Shipley College. I borrowed
£2,573 which covered the full cost of the
course, and applying for the loan was simple
and easy as it was done online. I wanted to do
the course as it helps me gain the knowledge to
run my Accountancy Firm. As a small business
owner, I would not have been able to fund
this qualification which allows me to take
my business forward. Once I have completed
my Level 4, I would like to do a Chartered
Accountancy course in order to become a
fully qualified, self-employed Chartered
Accountant.’
Joan Russell, DSLR Photography Tutor
‘Before I started at Shipley College 5 years ago, I worked as a Self-Employed Press & Public Relations
Photographer and before that, at a national press agency. I enjoy teaching photography and the
best part is watching the group gain confidence using their cameras. They get more pleasure taking
pictures as they learn new techniques, and you can see how hungry they are to try new ideas.
You need a certain amount of enthusiasm and determination for the course, but you’ll have fun on
the way. Don’t be put off by all the technological speak. When it comes to photography, you don’t
need lots of fancy equipment and a degree in physics, just passion... and a camera of course!’
INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS
No fee reduction available
In a busy world where there are lots of demands for our attention, we can become stressed and anxious. Mindfulness helps us to see
clearly what is going on in our lives and rather than worrying about what has happened or might happen. It trains us to respond skilfully
to whatever is happening right now, be that good or bad. It will not eliminate life’s pressures, but in this introductory course we can learn
to use mindfulness practices to help us respond to difficulties in a calmer manner that benefits our head, heart and body.
as well as one day being able to start growing my own. Having done the 3 week ‘on-a-budget’ course and the 6 week
contemporary course at Shipley College, I wanted start the Level 2 qualification course. After the course, I would like to
continue on to the Level 3, even though I still see myself as a ‘hobby Florist’ rather than doing it as a career.’
PAY YOUR
COURSE FEES
HOW TO PAY YOUR COURSE FEES
Unless otherwise stated, all fees are usually paid when you enrol and before attendance at the
first class. The fees include; course fees and, where relevant, registration fees, an exam and/ or a
certification fee.
On some courses there are fee reductions available, these are marked throughout the course guide
using the Fee Reduction Key on page 49. To find out if you are eligible, see the Fee Reduction Key.
There may be additional examination, registration or certification fees as indicated in course details
which students are responsible for paying directly to the College’s Examination Office. Please note
that the College may withhold certificates until full payments relating to the course and examinations
have been paid.
PAYMENT METHODS
Course fees over £150 can be paid in instalments. If paying in instalments they are usually divided in
to three payments, with the first instalment due at enrolment, and the two subsequent payments by
standing order as stated on your signed instalment form.
You can pay by:
• Cash
• Credit/debit card
• Cheque (made payable to Shipley College)
• If relevant a company email or a letter from your employer on headed paper stating they will pay
your fees in full, if this applies to you.
• Confirmation letter for Advanced Learner Loan for Level 3 or Level 4 courses.
The College’s policy is not to waive course fees, except in exceptional circumstances, when a student
withdraws after the start of their course.
CLASS CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY
Prior to the commencement of a course, the College will consider an application for the refund of fees.
The College will refund fees if the course fails to start or if it is cancelled by the College within 3 weeks
of the start date due to low enrolments. Once the course has started, refunds are not available in any
other circumstances.
If a class is cancelled for reasons beyond the College’s control, such as bad weather, the College will
attempt to give as much warning as possible. While every attempt will be made to replace a cancelled
class, we regret that the College cannot guarantee to do so. Where it proves impossible to do so,
the College will not make a refund.
