THE RAPE CLAUSE
In January the conservatives have enacted a policy whereby families will
only be able to claim benefits for the first two children.
The two child policy is bad enough in itself and has been criticised by the
Equality and Human Rights Commission.
The government included a measure that would enable the cap to be ignored
if a third (or subsequent) child was born to a mother who was in an abusive
relationship or where she had been sexually assaulted. The so-called "rape
clause" requires a mother seeking benefits for a third child to prove she has
been sexually assaulted or that the child was conceived during an abusive
relationship.
The very concept that a woman would need to claim she had suffered in
these ways in order to claim benefit for a third child is inhumane. The
feelings and safety of any women involved have not been understood or
taken into account.
The reporting requirements are invasive and humiliating for people who may
already have suffered terribly. Further the children themselves may never
need to know the circumstances of their conception but under this law it will
become known if the mother needs to claim benefit.
This law is cruel, it lacks compassion and understanding.
It comes from a cruel government which lacks compassion and
understanding.
That all needs to end. Labour are committed to ending this obnoxious law.
Lets end this obnoxious government.
