WELCOME
As we come to the end of another half term, from which on our return we will enter the final week of this
academic year, I would just like to thank all parents, students and staff for their ongoing commitment to
everything that we are trying to do at Coombeshead Academy.
Over the course of the last half term and the academic year itself, the newsletter continues to detail all the
fabulous achievements and opportunities available for all the students at the school. Without the commitment
of all stakeholders, this simply wouldn’t be possible. In the most trying of financial times for schools, we are
making a commitment to ensure that the experience of children will not suffer.
In addition to this week’s newsletter, I have sent, via email a letter to parents regarding one or two important
aspects of school that parents need to be aware of.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very restful and enjoyable half term break and we look
forward to welcoming everyone back on the 5 th June for the final stretch to the summer holidays.

ROCKING THE DEVON COUNTY SHOW!
The Bushell Youth Community Orchestra, the
Coombeshead Academy Folk Group and Soul
Band wowed the crowd at one of Devon’s
highest profile events on Thursday 18 th May 2017.
The ensembles were invited to play at the
prestigious event by the Devon Music Education
Hub and managed to fit the event into their
already packed performance diaries.
Upon arriving at the Exeter Westpoint Arena, the
students were thrilled to discover that they were
due to perform on the big main stage with a full
PA system and space for a large audience.

As the time ticked just past lunchtime the food court was already busy just as BYCO started their
performance. As they started to play even more people gathered to enjoy their lunch and more importantly,
to enjoy the music. The music they performed included The Pink Panther, Oliver!, In the Hall of the Mountain
King and Pirates of the Caribbean.
The audience were impressed with such a young orchestra performing to such a high standard and the
organisers of the event have already asked could they perform again next year.
The Soul Band performed a 25 minute set
which included some old soul classics
and also soul versions of current pieces
of contemporary music.
The Folk Group followed on from the Soul
Band and continued to impress and
amaze the Devon County Show
audience. Performing original renditions
of sea-shanties, traditional folk songs and
contemporary classics the nine folk
musicians filled the stage with great live
music.
Many members of the public
commented on how professional, talented, and pleasing to the ear the band were, with some even making
the mistake of thinking they were listening to a recording!
The students were a credit to Coombeshead Academy and really enjoyed the experience of performing for
such a large audience.
The talented young musicians here at Coombeshead continue to challenge the distinction between ‘school
group’ and ‘professional working bands’.

CHRISTIAN AID 2017
A beautiful day, a good cause and
students to be very proud of!
On Saturday 20 th May, we were asked
to perform at the annual Christian Aid
Charity Walk. This year was the 50 th
anniversary of the event. Over the past
50 years, the community in Newton
Abbot has raised over £300,000.

We arranged for the Coombeshead
Academy Folk Group, Soul Band and
various student led groups to perform at
the event. The students were very well received and the feedback we had from members of the public was
excellent.
Curriculum Team Leader of Expressive Arts Andy Tyner said, “It’s amazing to see the wealth and depth of
musical talent at Coombeshead Academy. The students are full of confidence and have a great enthusiasm
to display their musical abilities at outside of school events. The support we receive from the pupils and
parents is great and this helps us to give them as many opportunities we can to perform as musicians.”

SPORT & PE
**WIMBLEDON TRIP - SPACES AVAILABLE**
CHRISTOW
Two Places have become available for the Wimbledon Trip on the 5 th -6 th
July 2017. The Trip will include a full day at Wimbledon, watching court 2
matches, an overnight stay with breakfast, a tour of the Emirates stadium
and sightseeing in London.
A Jam-packed two-day sporting trip that you won’t want to miss.

ASHMOOR HOCKEY U14 PLAYER OF THE SEASON
Joe Ellis has won the U14 Player of the Season award at last night’s Ashmoor
Hockey Annual presentation. Joe has also been selected for West Panther
Hockey and will be representing the SW at the Hockey Tournament in
Nottingham this June. He has been selected to be Vice Captain for the Cup
team. Well done Joe!
SOUTH DEVON RUGBY U13s
Congratulations to Jack Connor who has been selected to represent South
Devon Rugby at U13's.
This has contributed to his already brilliant season at Coombeshead where he has
captained the school team to cup winning form.
Jack is also a member of the PE Department’s gifted and talented programme at
Coombeshead.
