LONDON NOCTURNE CYCLISTS READY TO LIGHT UP THE CITY’S NIGHT

massive hit with spectators

Nocturne is
going global
AN award-winning cycling series that has
its roots right here in the Square Mile is
returning to its spiritual home on 10 June
– and is bringing some of the sport’s biggest
names with it.
The inaugural Nocturne – launched by Rapha,
FACE Partnership, and Condor Cycles – took
place in 2007 around the historic Smithfield
Market, and made such a lasting impact on the
5,000 spectators that the after-dark spectacle
was awarded a Visit London Sports Tourism
gong.
Building on its mighty debut, Nocturne went
on to establish itself as a mainstay in the cycling
calendar, and last year a move to a more central
City circuit was televised live on Eurosport
International.
The finishing straight, found at the end of
an intense 1.3km route sprinkled with testing
right-angled corners – will be located along
Cheapside with St Paul’s as the back drop.
The course is 250m longer than in previous
years, giving crowds an extra few seconds of
excitement.
Mark Cavendish, David Millar and Geraint
Thomas are among the major names to have
graced the Square Mile’s streets in previous
editions of the race, with celebrity guests
including Sir Paul Smith, Geoff Banks, Pierre
Koffman, Jody Scheckter and Sir Chris Hoy.
A diverse race programme – including
amateur events such as the Penny Farthing race
and the Folding Bike race – has helped the series
go international, and from August Nocturne
will cordon off a new circuit in Copenhagen,
Denmark.
For FACE Partnership CEO James Pope, the
expansion is just the start of what could be a
global roll out.
“We are at the start of a new three-year
partnership with Rapha and they were part of
the original idea to create the Nocturne – so it
has come full circle now,” he said.
“We are going to take the event to some of
the most iconic cities in the world, Copenhagen
being the first city later this year – and then
expanding to the US and beyond.
“It’s all about Rapha’s ambitions and working
with us to create the Rapha Nocturne Series,
which will be a world series with the aim of
finding the best crit racer in the world.”
Presence
Rapha founder and chief executive Simon
Mottram shared James’ ambition and wants to
utilise his company’s existing global presence.
He explained: “Rapha has grown massively
in 10 years and cycling has grown hugely in
10 years. We are now in a number of different
countries around the world, and most of our
sales are international,” he said.
“So we really want to put together a proper
global series of events. And in all of those cities
you have the same kind of cycling culture that
you have in London – with amazing fans of the
sport, active riders, commuters and families
who come together and celebrate the sport.”
RAPHA VILLAGE
Visit the Rapha Village and watch the racing
trackside. An interactive light installation
will light up the racing as riders zoom past.
Enjoy the Rapha Clubhouse experience in
the bustling pop-up; watch Rapha films and
buy from the Rapha Nocturne collection.
Then get your new purchases customised
with your name, pay a visit to the
photobooth, race your friends and enemies
at Rollapaluza, and grab an espresso from
the Rapha H-Van.
It’s also the place to be fed and watered
by the main Vedett bar, the Allpress Coffee
Caravan, Stofano pizza sandwiches and
steak sandwiches to keep you going all day,
as well as seating to rest your feet when it all
gets a bit much.
RIDER VILLAGE
Big screens, live music, food and drinks – a
great place to meet the racers in Guildhall’s
stunning courtyard.
Get into the party spirit with live DJs
pumping music all day. The Rapha Mobile
Clubhouse will make its UK debut, giving
out coffee to fuel the races, and spectators
can see the racers up close before and after
their races.
The Rapha Cycling Club will have a
dedicated rider pit stop for all RCC racers
on the day, where they can leave their
belongings safely, relax ahead of the race,
and get into the zone.
RAPHA CYCLING CLUB CORNER
The Rapha Cycling Club Corner is for the
die-hard racing fans, with the promise of a
crackling atmosphere.
Even if you’re not a member, wear pink
and black and head here for cowbells, horns,
and the trickiest section of the course.
The Vedett bar nearby will keep your
thirst quenched.
FAMILY AREA
Keep the kids busy with a range of
entertainment and activities in the family
area, including a mini pump track.
British Cycling are offering cycle
proficiency training for kids from 4pm, and
there will also be HGV safety awareness
exercises.
HOSPITALITY
Be at the heart of the racing with a direct
view of the finish line and live commentary
piped through.
Free food and drink all day, a goodie
bag and VIP guests to rub elbows with

CLUBHOUSES
The Soho and Spitalfields Clubhouses will
have shuttle rides leading people to the
Rapha Nocturne regularly throughout the
day, plus talks and activities.0
