HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB NEWS - JUNE 2017
Our neighborhood is in full bloom and is just beautiful! I just love the
fragrant gorgeous Magnolia’s and Gardenia’s among all the other bloomers.
The talent of some of our neighborhood landscapers and gardeners is
amazing. I have seen such beautiful yards and flower beds throughout the
neighborhood. If you have not been out walking or driving, check out the
beauty. What a great way to stimulate your senses!
Did you know the Hearthstone Garden Club chooses a Hearthstone “Yard
of the Month” each month? Our committee works very hard to find the
one yard which stands out and it is not an easy task. There are some
lovely yards in our neighborhood. When a yard is chosen, the committee
places the “Yard of the Month” sign in the winner’s yard then presents the
homeowner with a small gift. Our way of saying “Thank You for beautifying
our neighborhood.” The sign remains in place for that month and the
winner’s information is displayed on the Hearthstone Sign by the park, at
the corner of Huffmeister and Ameswood. A picture of the winning yard
and owner information is featured in the Hearthstone News. What a nice
way to be recognized for all your hard work!
All homes in Hearthstone are eligible to win “Yard of the Month” except for
“Yard of Fame” winners. After a homeowner has won “Yard of the Month”
four times, their yard becomes eligible for the Hearthstone Garden Clubs
Yard of Fame. Once awarded “Yard of Fame,” the yard is no longer eligible
for consideration as “Yard of the Month.” Keep your yards looking great,
who knows when your yard will be chosen.
Are you ready for the summer and the heat it brings? The beautiful days
of sunshine, picnics, vacationing or sitting by the pool are here. We all
dread the summer temps of Houston and I don’t know what the Almanac
is predicting, but I bet it is HOT and HUMID.
It is not too late to make sure your landscape and grass is going to
survive. One of the most important things you can do is to water wisely
and efficiently. Know your landscapes needs. Think about how you
are watering, as there are many factors which can affect the amount of
water our lawns and gardens are getting. The soil plays a big part in how
much your landscape and yards need. Deep root watering promotes deep
healthy roots and in turn plants and trees are stronger, healthier and
more resilient. Too much water for certain plants leads to disease. New
plants need to be watered daily for the first two weeks. Container plants
dry out quicker and need watered every other day if not daily as the heat
increases. Do not water the foliage, if possible to prevent sun scald. Water
in the morning between 3-7 AM in the summer, this gives the water time to
soak into the ground before the sun comes up and the heat rises. Do not
water from 12-6 PM, as this is the hottest part of the day and most of the
water will only evaporate. Avoid watering at night, as this promotes fungus
and disease. Windy days disrupt the amount of water which reaches the
earth’s surface, so think about that. Soaker hoses in garden beds are great
for more direct watering. Invest in rain barrels to help conserve water
and reuse the rain water for containers or garden beds rather than your
sprinklers, if possible. It may even help with your water bill and we all
know about the increase in our water bill in the summer. Rain barrels are
a great investment and allows reuse of rain water which would have been
runoff. Conservation is important for Mother Earth.
Speaking of Mother Earth, were you aware Hearthstone Garden Club has
a Scholarship Program? We use money earned from our plant sale and
Holiday Auction to help fund this Scholarship program. The Scholarship
program is for college students majoring in Horticulture, Floriculture,
Agriculture, Forestry, Landscape Design, Botany, Ecology/Conservation,
Floral Design, Turf Grass Management.
“If It Has A Dirty Surface, We Can Clean It”
At the end of the Scholarship year of 2016 we had awarded 68 students with a total of $71,000.
So if you wonder what we do with our money, this is a big part of it. This does not include
the six $1,500 scholarships we are awarding for the 2017 year end, which brings our total
Scholarships awarded to $80,000. WOW!
There are special requirements, but those students awarded took the time and effort to
do what is required. Some students have even applied and been selected more than once.
Hearthstone college students who meet the requirements are encouraged to apply. We would
love to see one of our Hearthstone kids benefit from our program.
There are some special requirements which include:
• Be a Texas resident.
• Be a returning college student (including seniors and graduate student) majoring in one of
the fields listed above.
• Attend school during the semester in which the scholarship will paid.
• Attach to his/her application form the current official college transcript (with seal) for each
school attended. Last college semester must be included.
• Attach a recent photograph to the application.
• Be recommended in writing by at least two (2) qualified references.
General administration of the Hearthstone Garden Club Scholarship is under the direction
of the Scholarship Committee and the Executive Board. Application forms are distributed
to Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University, Texas Tech University and Stephen
F. Austin University. Other schools may request to receive applications by contacting the
Scholarship Committee.
The Scholarship Committee evaluates applications and recipients are then notified in May of
their selection. Deadline for Submission of Application is in March each year.
Receipts for tuition indicating full-time enrollment must be presented by the recipient to
receive payment of the scholarship funds. If the scholarship award is not used by the ending
date of the award (after two consecutive regular semesters from initial award), the unused
portion of the award will be returned to the scholarship fund and the recipient will need to
reapply. We love education and are glad we can offer assistance to students in this way. We
have been fortunate through the years to have the money to do so and hope to continue this
for many years to come.
The Hearthstone Garden Club wrapped up the 2016-2017 year on the evening of May 16 th with a
special evening for the Installation Ceremony and dinner for our new Board and President Elect
for 2017-2018. Many new and exciting things are planned for the new year, as we celebrate our
40 th yeat as a garden club here in Hearthstone. We have a wonderful group and our members
have so much to offer. We hope anyone interested in the Garden Club will considering joining
us on August 15 th at 7 PM for our Social. Watch for the ad in the Hearthstone News, on our
Facebook page, Nextdoor Hearthstone or the sign at the park.
As always, please contact me or one of our members if you have any questions. Have a great
summer, stay cool, stay hydrated and be safe!!! We will see you around the neighborhood.
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR
HARRIS COUNTY CONSTABLE
The Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5 is now offering a class on
Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). RAD is one of the best women’s self-defense
courses available. It’s a program based on realistic self-defense tactics and
techniques. It is a comprehensive self-defense course for women that
begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while
progressing on to the basics of hands-on defensive training. If you’re
interested in more information and signing up, go to this link:
www.constablepct5.com/2016/06/16/rad-classes-available
Make sure if you or your family goes on vacation to put in a “Vacation
Watch” with our department. That way you’ll know your house is being
watched by our patrol deputies. You can fill out a vacation watch form
online here:
Or you can call our dispatch at 281-463-6666.
HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like you
see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light poles
along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the pole
number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number facing
the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or staying on
during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google
streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported
to PCMI at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest
address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime
inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report it,
so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.
TRASH DAYS
Trash days are Tuesdays and Fridays with recycling pickup on Fridays. If
you have questions, call 281-368-8397.
BOARD MEETING
Board Meetings are now bi-monthly, usually on the 3 rd Wednesday at 7:00
PM. Hearthstone Country Club.
LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with
their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each
dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have
machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help
found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
WEBSITE
Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use
design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news,
quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association
forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added,
please let us know.
The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www.
hearthstonehoa.org.
among group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to
those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined
the email group, you do not need to do so again.
HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS
When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep
in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written
approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to
customercare@pcmi-us.com. The PCMI call center is manned by three
people. The main number is 281-870-0585. The hours are 7 AM to 6 PM
Monday through Thursday and 7 AM to 5 PM on Fridays.
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do
not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is
anyone you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle
parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that
you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police
catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge
that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that
you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be
home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them
out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age,
they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is
there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later).
Then have them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the
door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them,
the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain
sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
CYCHRISTIAN DRUMLINE AND CHOIR EARN GOLD
The high school choir and drumline competed in the Heritage Worldstrides Music Festival.
Each group had the opportunity to perform their contest pieces and receive feedback from a
panel of three judges, which included college music educators. For their performance, both
the choir and the drumline received a gold rating, which is the highest ranking available at this
competition. And for the second time in three years, the choir was awarded an invitation to
sing at Carnegie Hall in New York for the 2019 Festival of Gold. “This is an enormous and welldeserved
honor,” says Music Director Luke Kirkwood.
KINDERGARTEN BEDTIME STORIES AT CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
Current and incoming CCS kindergarteners enjoyed hearing fun stories from
Principal White and kindergarten teachers at the annual Kindergarten Bedtime
Story Night. Mr. White dressed up as a farmer to share the book “The Cow
Loves Cookies” by Karma Wilson. He had all the kids laughing with his hilarious
farmer accent. Next, the children heard from kindergarten teacher Mrs. Lacaze
dressed as a frog from the
book “I Don’t Want to be a
Frog” by Dev Petty. This was
followed by a lovely lion,
Mrs. Hroch, reading “The
Lion and the Little Red Bird”
by Elisa Kleven. The evening
ended with Mrs. Jansson’s
entertaining rendition of the
book “The Twelve Days of
Kindergarten: A Counting
Book” by Deborah Lee Rose.
The children loved how
Mrs. Jansson sang the story
instead of reading it! It was a
fun night had by all.
SPLASH!
PROGRAMS/
EVENTS
The Cypress-Fairbanks
ISD Splash! program
offers swim lessons
periodically throughout
the year. All lessons are
based on the American
Red Cross Learn to
Swim program and the
program is supervised by
WSI Certified instructors.
Whether your child is brand new to the water or they are swimming laps, our
instructors have the unique ability to build on the skills your child already
possesses. We have three options for group lessons: Level 1 (Introduction to Water
Skills), Level 2 (Fundamental Aquatic Skills) and Level 3 (Stroke Development).
We also offer private lessons for younger students (under 4 yrs), for students
whose skills are greater than our Level 3 curriculum and for adults over 18 who
would like to learn the basics.
Open lanes are for participants to work on stroke, time and conditioning
individually. A great way to reinforce skills that have been achieved! While an
instructor and lifeguard are present, this is not a lesson. (instructor approval
required)
Children with special needs are also welcome! We will work with both the parents
and child to find the best fit where he or she will be most successful in the program.
our supporters, over the past three years, we have raised over $70,000, facilitated over 700 flu
shots, traveled over 4,000 miles in our bus and made over 50 appearances at medical facilities
and health expos to raise flu awareness. To fulfill our mission, we need the money raised to
provide flu shots for people in need, cover printing costs concerning flu information, maintain
and house our mascot vehicle and pay exhibitor fees to raise awareness. The 4 th Annual Holly on
the Range will be held at TopGolf Houston-Katy from 6-9 PM. TopGolf Houston-Katy is located at
NATIONAL SELFIE DAY
June 21, 2017
You know what’s really annoying? People who take selfies all day. I mean, they always
have these amazing profile pics and look utterly fantastic. It’s like they took thousands
of images to get just the right one and it’s so frustrating! They’re so vain! So Awful! So….
We admit it, we’re jealous we’re not able to take such a perfect selfie, ours always come
out looking like they were taken by a framing impaired pigeon landing on a discarded
camera. That’s ok though! On Selfie Day you can take the time to take a thousand photos
to get just the right one and not feel ashamed. After all, it’s a holiday!
History of Selfie Day
Selfies have probably existed as long as hand-held cameras have been a thing. Human
vanity is so utterly profound that if we’re given the opportunity to do something selfaggrandizing,
we do. This habit, in our defense, doesn’t seem to be strictly human in
nature. Given access to a camera and a little time to figure it out, monkeys will start
snapping selfies like no one’s business. In 2014, BBC officially declared a Selfie Day,
which amusingly heralded a sudden decline in selfies. Interestingly, there was a similar
drop after the Oxford English Dictionary added ‘selfie’ to its pages. Apparently making
something official is a fine way of making sure no one wants to do them anymore.
But don’t let that worry you, we’re pretty sure the selfie is definitely here to stay, especially
since there have been a series of inventions to make it easier to do. From the ‘selfie-stick’
to the write mounted drone that will take flight and snap a photo of you on request, selfie
technology is getting more advanced every day.
How to celebrate Selfie Day
Selfie day is best celebrated by taking tons and tons of selfies in pursuit of the perfect
one. So get out there with your camera and take a picture of yourself every time the
opportunity presents itself, we won’t judge you! You can even buy yourself a selfie-stick
to take pictures of yourself with. For once you don’t have to be embarrassed to take a
selfie to post on your profiles, you’ve got one clear excuse and an absolute pass on it for
the day. It’s Selfie Day!
Volunteer Opportunities
CYPRESS ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize
volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us
know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment
they receive from helping others.
Cypress Assistance Ministries is a local non-profit organization serving the Cy-
Fair area for over 25 years. CAM offers assistance to those in need by providing
financial assistance, food, clothing, employment assistance as well as GED &
ESL classes. A huge part of this organization is its volunteers. Currently we
are in need of volunteers in many different areas of the ministry. If you would
like more information on how to become involved, please contact Tara Rauch
at 281-955-7684 or tarar@cypressassistance.org. We look forward to hearing
from you!
organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the
farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school
and college-aged students interested in working with both children and
animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e.,
summer camp). Please call our director, Ms. Fritzi, at 713-983-0075, for
more information. A background check will be required of all individuals
applying for a volunteer position at our facility.
FOSTER CHILDREN:
PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives
with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see
BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats
hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to
large dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from.
We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to
commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need
foster families. Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep,
foster families socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include
the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as
individuals so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes.
Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible.
Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted, please
know that your efforts helped to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever
home.
STATE PARKS
BEST PLACES TO CAMP IN TEXAS
Ray Roberts Lake State Park
Ray Roberts Lake State Park is situated on a 3,000-acre
reservoir just north of the hustle and bustle of Dallas.
Campers here are encouraged to hike miles of trails
and primitive camping is available for the practiced
adventurer. The highlight of the park, though, is the clean
beach and easy lake access. Ray Roberts Lake is so big it
can often feel like a seaside bay. Folks out here boat, ski,
swim and fish away the stress of the city in style. The park
is also home to multiple marathons throughout the year.
Lake Bob Sandlin State Park
Campers of Northeast Texas know that it doesn’t get
much more patriotic than spotting the majestic eagles
during winter trips to Lake Bob Sandlin State Park. For the
camper that is also an avid fisherman, Lake Bob Sandlin
is a great spot for largemouth bass, spotted bass and
bluegills.
Inks Lake State Park
Tucked away in the Texas Hill Country is Inks Lake State
Park. Hill Country topography mixes with the pristine
water of Inks Lake to create a perfect camping experience.
On land, campers can backpack, geocache and birdwatch.
And on water, campers can boat, ski, fish and
even dive from the cliffs at the popular Devil’s Waterhole
section of the lake.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
The Texas Panhandle is home to Palo Duro Canyon, “The
Grand Canyon of Texas.” Campers here can hike, bike or
horseback through the canyon and view the multicolored
rocks, caves and hoodoos (rock towers). Palo Duro is also
home to the Texas Outdoor Musical, which runs June through
mid-August.
Caprock Canyons State Park
Campers flock to Palo Duro’s neighbor, Caprock Canyons
State Park for both its awesome hiking and its magnificent
wildlife–namely, the Official Bison Herd of the State of
Texas. Over 10,000 acres are reserved for these bison that
descended from a herd started by Charles Goodnight in
1878. The park is also known for its steep cliffs and dropoffs,
which offer experienced hikers and mountain bikers
a challenging adventure.
Davis Mountains State Park
Out in West Texas, Davis Mountains State Park offers
a definitively Texan experience. Here, campers are
encouraged to bring their horses to camp. Horseback
riding trails in the park rise up to 5,700 feet. Don’t fret if
you happen to leave your trusted steed at home. Davis
Mountains State Park also offers hiking, mountain biking,
bird watching and stargazing tours.
Padre Island National Seashore
Camping along the Gulf Coast on the Padre Island
National Seashore is a completely unique experience.
The sand and the sea provide ample opportunity for the
beach-loving camper. Here, campers can watch newborn
sea turtles take to the ocean for the first time, sea kayak
below a pod of pelicans and fish for their dinner.
strips on top and bake for 1 hour. If necessary, run under broiler to crisp
bacon before serving. Makes 15 servings. I have also put this mixture in a
crockpot on low for 4 hours. Submitted by J Stults
