GARBAGE SERVICE
Remember, heavy trash days for June 2017 are June
6 th and June 20 th . Also, remember to keep your garbage
cans at least three feet away from other garbage cans,
cars, poles or anything that might block the truck from
gaining access to the can on pickup day. Also remember
that items piled up by the garbage can may not be
picked up, except on heavy trash days. Thank you for
your cooperation. Please contact WAC (our trash company) to confirm
heavy pick up days. WAC- 281-368-8397. Please, remember Sheffield HOA
does not manage your trash service. This service is through Langham
Creek MUD (water bill) 281-579-4500. If you have any questions regarding
the new service, please refer back to the insert that was included in your
water bill or contact WCA at 281-368-8397 or the MUD.
Please be advised that CyFair ISD has removed all of the recycling
containers at all of their school locations due to improper use. Your
recycling can that WCA picks up every Friday is the only way you can
recycle at the present. We will notify residents of any other recycling
options as we learn of them.
DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS
Do you know what the top three reasons management companies send
out deed restriction letters? The first is not keeping your yard mowed and
weeded. Mow your yard on a regular basis, keeping it a little higher in
the summer months, which helps in water retention and crowding out
weeds. The second is leaving your trashcans out in front of the house or
garage. Trashcans should be kept out of sight (in the garage, behind the
privacy fence or behind shrubs or a purpose built enclosure. Contact Crest
Management if you wish to build a trashcan enclosure for Architectural
Control forms. The third reason is mildew on the house siding. This often
happens on shady areas of the house. Power washing or spraying with a
cleaning solution for mildew often takes care of the problem.
DEED RESTRICTION - TRAILERS, RV’S AND BOATS
It is a violation of our deed restrictions to park a trailer, mobile home,
RV, boat, 18-wheeler tractor/trailer or camper in your driveway. You
can park these on your property only if they are completely out of sight
(in the garage, in the back yard behind the house). If you cannot meet
these rules, it must be stored offsite (out of the neighborhood). If you
have questions on this, please call the Assistant Community Property
Manager, Shannon Nogradi, at 281-579-0761 or via email at shannon.
nogradi@crest-management.com. Thank you for your cooperation.
GARAGE SALE SIGNS
Placing garage sale signs in the flower and shrub beds within the
neighborhood is not permitted. Such signs found in the flower and shrub
beds will be removed immediately and placed in the trash.
COMMUNITY INFORMATION AND MEETING NOTICES
please go to the Crest website at www.crest-management.com and go to
communities, then scroll down to Sheffield and there you will find a place
to sign up with your email address and if you scroll to the bottom, you can
obtain community information, legal documents or applications as well.
CONTACTING CREST MANAGEMENT & THE BOARD
If you have a matter you would like to discuss with Crest, Shannon
Nogradi is our representative and can be reached at 281-579-0761 or by
email at shannon.nogradi@crest-management.com. If you wish to meet
with Shannon, please call Crest and make an appointment to ensure
they are available to assist you.
LITTER PICKUP
Just a reminder, if you see trash in the neighborhood, please be a good
neighbor and pick it up and dispose of it properly. Otherwise, then trash
6 June 2017 | Sheffield
will either end up in someone’s shrubbery or trees or else get washed
down the storm sewers, contributing to mosquito breeding and backing
up of the storm drains in times of heavy rains. Thanks to those of you who
regularly pick up other people’s litter.
PETS
Please remember that you are not allowed by law to let your dogs and
cats run loose in the neighborhood. If caught, you may receive a ticket
in the amount of up to $500 for such a violation (we have had residents
receive such a ticket). If you see loose pets you can contact Harris County
Animal Control. A number of Sheffield residents either walk their dogs
or let their cats run loose. It is a violation of deed restrictions to let your
pet leave their poop on another resident’s lawn or the common grounds
(they belong to all of Sheffield’s residents). If your pet does have to go
to the bathroom, please be courteous and carry a plastic bag (store
bags or the newspaper delivery bag are great for this), pick up the pile
by placing your hand inside the bag, grab the pile through the bag, tie
the bag up and throw it in the garbage. Leaving your pet waste around
encourages the possible spread of pet disease, such as Parvo, which
can be life threatening, or parasites. A number of complaints have been
made about stray cats roaming the neighborhood. To report stray or
unconfined animals call 281-999-3191, Monday thru Friday during the
hours of 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM.
VANDALISM
Remember, if you see suspicious activity in or around Sheffield, please
immediately call the Harris County Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-
6000. Also, let Shannon at Crest Management know at 281-579-0761.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots
from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the
temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce
in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to
cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t
bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to
encourage more of the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra,
Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb,
Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium,
Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant,
Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most
bugs for the rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber,
Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash
and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms
now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty
of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to
keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a
layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant.
Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates
the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun.
Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend
to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a
2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
The sun is up, the birds are singing and the mosquitoes are finally hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn’t all rainbows and fresh fish,
but June is Camping Month and it’s a great opportunity to get outside with the family and enjoy the great outdoors. Research shows that
people who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed and tend to buy more bug repellant. What? We don’t like mosquitoes any more
than you do, but we do love camping! Who doesn’t love sitting under the stars roasting marshmallows and making S’mores or waking up
to the smell of wood smoke and bacon?
History of Camping Month
While there was a time when ‘camping’ was just called ‘being alive,’ that all changed in the 1800’s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding
began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail
and once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced to others. Once camping in general had become popularized,
Thomas went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world. This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride
until you find a spot to camp, get up the next day and do it all over again.
What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham’s Camp. From this point
in history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere weekend family getaways, to RV camping and everything in
between. Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the evening or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a
backpack full of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.
How to celebrate Camping Month
Well, this has got to be the easiest answer ever, GO CAMPING. Even if it’s just a pop-up tent and sleeping bag in your backyard under the
stars, get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. There’s a place to find your soul and set your mind to peace out in the great
distant woods and they’re calling all of us to head back out there and find ourselves. So pile into your car, find yourself some secluded spot
to set up a tent and celebrating Camping Month by going camping!
annual BF Adam Golf Classic, held May 11 th at BlackHorse Golf Club.
SPLASH! PROGRAMS/EVENTS
The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Splash! program offers swim lessons
periodically throughout the year. All lessons are based on the American
Red Cross Learn to Swim program and the program is supervised by WSI
Certified instructors.
Whether your child is brand new to the water or they are swimming laps,
our instructors have the unique ability to build on the skills your child
already possesses. We have three options for group lessons: Level 1
(Introduction to Water Skills), Level 2 (Fundamental Aquatic Skills) and
Level 3 (Stroke Development).
We also offer private lessons for younger students (under 4 yrs), for
students whose skills are greater than our Level 3 curriculum and for
adults over 18 who would like to learn the basics.
The annual event, named after longtime CFISD school Board member
and elementary school namesake Bernard Fred (BF) Adam, contributes
to the CFEF mission of increasing college access for CFISD graduates by
awarding scholarships.
The North Course winner was Purcell Construction, Inc., shooting a score
of 55. Team members were Larry Purcell, Jed Purcell, David Ortego and
Roy Sprague. The North Course Longest Drive winner was Randy Crowder
and the Closest to the Hole winner was Mark Miller. The Stik-It Closest to
the Hole winner was Rich Guderyon.
Michael Martin was the putting contest winner.
Open lanes are for participants to work on stroke, time and conditioning
individually. A great way to reinforce skills that have been achieved! While
an instructor and lifeguard are present, this is not a lesson. (instructor
approval required)
Children with special needs are also welcome! We will work with both
the parents and child to find the best fit where he or she will be most
successful in the program. For pricing, schedule and registration form,
GIRL SCOUT NEWS
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
Copper Creek Meadows Community held a Bridging Ceremony in May,
for troops moving from one Girl Scout level to another. Our stage was
decorated by the girls to remind us of the outdoors and camp. As each
troop arrived on stage, a leader recounted all the activities of the past
year. We heard about service projects, badges and awards earned,
journeys completed and all the fun that the girls had. As their names
were called, each girl crossed the bridge to her new level. Many of our
troops also complete activities to earn the bridging patch. They teach
younger Scouts about the level they are leaving and learn from older
Scouts some of the things they will need to know.
Copper Creek Meadows also thanked our leaders and other volunteers
with an end-of-year celebration and meeting. We really appreciate all
of our leaders and other volunteers for all that they do! Congratulations
to Donna Fontenot and Julie Bruggeman Mayer, who received the
“Appreciation Award” at the 2017 Adult Recognition Event for Girl Scouts
of San Jacinto Council. Many thanks for all of your years of hard work!
Daisy troop 113403 attended “Dr. Girl Scout” and learned about the human
body and healthy living. They visited Camp Misty Meadows for a “Love, Hug
and Groom” session where they met some of the camp horses and took a
tour of the barn. Troop 16468 continued to work on their aMAZING Journey.
They hosted Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts from Copper
Creek Meadows and other communities in Region 4 for a movie viewing and
discussion. The movie shown was “Lemonade Mouth.” The troop provided
snacks and refreshments and took the lead in the discussion that followed.
Junior troop 16460
Junior troop 16460 has been working with Special Paws, a no-kill,
non-profit animal shelter in northwest Houston. The troop donated
a wood bench swing, for the dog park, which they had sanded and refinished.
They cleaned and painted tires to make flower planters for the
shelters and planted colorful flowers to brighten things up. They also
held a successful Donation Drive for items on Special Paws’ “wish list”
and collected pet food and other supplies for the shelter. The troop is
working to earn the Bronze Award, which is the highest award for Junior
Girl Scouts.
As the school year winds down, Girl Scouts look forward to summer and
Girl Scout Camp! Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council offers day, twilight
and residential camps. Information can be found on the Council website,
www.gssjc.org.
18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may
join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t
forget that Girl Scouting is great for older girls as well! Girls whose busy
schedule does not allow for troop membership may participate as
individually registered Girl Scouts or Juliettes. San Jacinto Council offers
special interest groups in robotics, astronomy, archery, backpacking,
equitation, sailing, riflery and dance and drill (Green Starlettes).
BOY SCOUT NEWS
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing
units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools
YMCA CAMP
CAMP FLAMING ARROW
Hunt, Texas • 830-238-4631 • ymcasatx.org/campflamingarrow
Coed Campers, Ages 6-16
Our camp goal is to provide a summer camp experience rich in tradition
centered on our core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility
and faith, and allowing campers to gain independence, a higher selfworth
and life-long, positive memories. For instance, Pow Wow, our
chapel time, is led by an assigned cabin (teaching responsibility) and
a lesson is taught about the value of the day (e.g. Monday is devoted to
discussing the value of caring.) Our staff wear their value t-shirts daily to
remind all campers what the emphasis is for that day. Even discipline is
structured around our values: for instance, a time-out for being uncaring
and disrespectful to a fellow camper. Activities are taught with the
premise of respecting the safety rules and always having faith in yourself
and others. Each evening is concluded with an in-cabin devotional,
called Embers, which closes the day by reflecting on the daily value,
daily activities and fellowship with cabin mates and counselors. These
values transcend the camp session and supplement the values taught
at home. The YMCA Ragger Program is also offered for those youth and
staff who wish to be a part of a more spiritual self-growth program.
OFFERED - GILMONT CAMP
Gilmer, Texas • 903-797-6400 • gilmont.org
Within the close community built around cabin groups and time spent learning
and sharing, we ponder and practice what it means to Branch Out! Camp lasts
only one week―but what campers take home can last a lifetime. Campers are
reminded that they can take that camp-feeling with them everywhere they go
because they are connected to one another and to God by Christ. The Bible
stories in Branching Out encourage campers to use prayer, relationships,
family, and more to stay connected throughout their lives.
CAMP CHAMPIONS GIRLS SUMMER CAMP
Marble Falls, Texas • 830-598-2571 • campchampions.com
Coed Campers, Ages 5-18
A tradition of excellence since 1967, fantastic activities, and best-trained
counselors are a few of the reasons that Camp Champions is consistently
ranked among the top camps in the country, but what really sets our camp
apart is the intentional community we create year after year. We believe every
child has an inner Champion, and we create a loving community in which every
camper can flourish. Whether they realize it or not, we push every camper to
grow in character skills like independence and confidence while they are at
camp. And because there is an important niche in our community for every
camper to fill, we are consistently told that our campers are free to discover
“the best versions of themselves.” We are as committed to children and their
growth as any institution or program out there, and our community is the
primary way we support campers in this goal. Of course, we wouldn’t be able
to create such a community if we didn’t have such a blast every day at camp!
HEAT
We’re weeks away from sweltering temperatures,
hurricane warnings and bug invasions. Before summer
hits at full force, make sure you and your home are
prepared:
Give Your Air Conditioner a Checkup
• Replace your air filter to make sure the whole system
runs smoothly.
• Clear debris on or around your vents or exhausts and
clean off any dirt from the main unit outside.
• Install programmable thermostats.
Test for Ventilation Leaks
• First, look for actual leaks: drafts in your windows and
doors.
• Check your attic insulation for leaks and gaps.
Set Up a Barrier for Bugs
• Check caulking around windows and doors, fix any
drafts/gaps with new weather stripping and caulking.
• Spray outdoor perimeter with a pesticide, along with
baseboards, sinks, windows and doors.
Change Your Ceiling Fan Direction
• Run Ceiling Fans Counter-Clockwise for Summer Savings.
Prevent Water Damage
• Make sure your windows and doors are properly sealed
and caulked, too.
• Test gutters to look for water coming out of any places it
shouldn’t.
• Inspect your roof (remove any debris and leaves while
you’re up there).
a special “Patriotic Worship Event.” In celebration of our nation’s birthday
on July 4 th , Steve Hoyle, the Cornerstone Music Director, has put together
a festive musical extravaganza entitled, “Let Freedom Ring.” The program
will include patriot songs and readings, a time of prayer for our nation, a
salute to our Armed Forces and a “message in song.” On this Sunday only,
Cornerstone will have just one “church-wide” service at 10 AM. An orchestra
will accompany the Cornerstone chancel choir. After the service, there will
be a hot dog luncheon and a time of games and fellowship.
FATHER’S DAY CELEBRATION
CORNERSTONE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
18081 West Road, 281-859-4141, cornerstoneumc.org
A wonderful Father’s Day “Celebration” has been planned by the Worship
Ministry Team for Sunday, June 18 th . At all three worship services,
we will give a gift to every man in attendance. We will also be giving
an additional gift to three of our special fathers: the oldest father in
attendance, the father with the youngest child in nursery/worship and
the father with the most children present. The theme of the service will
be centered around Dr. Dave Meadows’ Father’s Day message entitled,
“Building Bridges to the Future” based on Joshua 24:14-18. Make plans
to join us for the special worship opportunity as we honor our fathers
and other men who have touched our lives with their guidance and love.
And be sure to bring your dad!
