Open the mouth, insert the airway upside down, advance until resistance is encountered, then turn the airway 180<br />
degrees so that it comes to rest with the flange on the patient’s teeth.<br />
What is the preferred method of inserting an oral airway in a pediatric patient?<br />
Insert the airway right side up, using a tongue depressor to press the tongue down and avoid obstructing the airway.<br />
When may a nasopharyngeal airway be used?<br />
On patients who are responsive but need assistance in keeping the tongue from obstructing the airway. Less noxious<br />
than the oral airway.<br />
How do you select the proper size of nasal airway?<br />
Measure from the tip of the nose to the tip of the patient’s ear. Also, consider the diameter of the airway in the<br />
nostril.<br />
How do you insert the nasal airway?<br />
Lubricate the airway with a water-soluble lubricant. Insert it posteriorly. The bevel should be toward the base of the<br />
nostril or toward the septum.<br />
